It was mentioned long ago that Umbra doesn't really use gates. His entrance during the summoning also happened through a crack in the dimension through which he seeped through. Whenever Ast calls him, we can see him emerge from some shadow. His case is special, though I can't say too much other than what has been described in the story about him, his realm, his situation, and existence :v

Question why is Ast still using the shadows when everyone can walk through the gate?? Why can’t umbra just open up the gate like the girls do to let them through?????
