This week, James and Jimmie discuss whether or not Charles Manson was a CIA asset... the book referenced is called 'Chaos' by Tom O'Neill.

Grab your tinfoil hat.

I have to admit, I admire a person who can go 20 years and conclude I don’t know? Can we put this guy on a random cold case?

Grace Vinecombe

I think Im convinced. Manson has always been my favorite serial killer case.

Heather Hicks

This is *insane*. I thought it would be an easy listen before bed, but now my brain is whirling and I can't get to sleep. I neeeeeed this book!

Sarah Zamenski

Jimmy's "whaat?" is my favorite thing!

Tracey Forziati

Omg. I fancy myself a student of this case. I loved this episode and even though it sounded crazy I went and got the book the next day. I’m 160 pages in. I would like to not work for the next week so I could just keep going.😂

Laura Errera

I HAVE this book next in line to read…literally on my bedside table…so I read it the listen?? Will the episode ruin the book for me?! I need so solid feedback from you guys

Krystal Hope

Are y’all able to do either a review of the movie “West of Memphis” or y’all’s thoughts on the Memphis 3 case. Thanks yall! Appreciate the dark humor

Nia

So excited for this

Cory

Diane Lake's book, Member of the Family, is my favorite Manson book. He assaulted her analy in the woods.

Erik Molnar

Helter Skelter, like Sid and Nancy, wall all I had 30 something years ago. I carried it like a Bible during the summer of 95. My mom showed me the 1976 movie when I was in the 6th grade. It's a classic. Very eeire soundtrack.

Erik Molnar

This isn't related to your comment, I just saw your username and thought I'd tell you that my cat's full name is Ziggy Stardust the Spider-Cat from Mars. That's all.

PurplePlissken

Mason's other child is an artists living somewhere in California, He's called Matt Brunner. He did an "art performance" which was called "The Re-trial of Charles Manson" that was performed at The Art Gallery of Satan... but he can't act, no one performing in it could. Not even a little bit. There were weird space themed mannaquins and everything was covered in tin foil. I swear I'm not making this up 😂 It looked nuts, I wish I could have seen it. He also looks SO MUCH LIKE HIS DAD. There's my knowledge on his living child. Sorry for the small 'tism info dump lol. Go look up the art show, it was something else.

PurplePlissken

Fascinating. Thank you James for all your work on this, what a trip!

Tammy Hedrick

Chaos is a very interesting book.

Rebecca Goddard

Jimmie and I said “Charles Manson had babies?” at the exact same time.

Dianne Davis

should do ynw melly case

Maguire Detlefsen

FIOA became law 1966, the big changes came in 1996, 2002, 2007, and 2016 as we have demanded more transparency.

Ken Kuipers

This feels plausible because of all the other shit that has happened from COINTELPRO. Take a look at Fred Hampton or when it was discovered that the CIA did have a part in cocaine getting to the U.S.. Rampart scandal is some crazy shit. Watch Judas and the Black Messiah, that will be an eye-opener.

Christopher Starks

MY MOTHAFUCKIN DAWGS FINALLY COVERED THIS BOOK THANK FUCK. Y'all are hilarious broskis. Rogan ain't got fuck all on y'all.

Chase Robertson

I read this book when it first came out and was stunned! It is so sketchy and diabolical that I can absolutely believe our lovely CIA was involved.

Karen Scronce

I for one had no idea about commander Tate

Msjustice

It was sooo good. I was just a young teenager but a half a hit of orange sunshine was amazing. My first trip completely changed my life.

Doug Shipley

This was very well done. I had not heard of this before and I’m a history nerd about the 60’s. More than plausible. Thanks for doing this.

Doug Shipley

Nicely done guys...

Sifyi

Loved this. Wild stuff and eerily possible. It makes too much sense to be a coincidence 🤷‍♂️

Tony Legg

Loved it

Nino Reyes

I listened to it a few months ago, I felt like the author jumped to a lot of conclusions. But the number of times Manson was let out of jail and the conduct of his parole officer is hard to accept as coincidental IMO. I think Manson was an asset for someone, but I feel like it wasn't as grand/unique of a conspiracy as the author claims.

Zach W

Shannon Exley

This was fascinating. I’ve never really dug into the whole Manson thing, but now I’m wanting to. You did a good job explaining a really complicated theory, James.

Molly S

"Really made his slip ride up" ded LOL

Shar_koo_dere_ee

I listened to the book when it came out. Somethings are def questionable Manson prob shouldn't have been out of jail by 66 or 67. With MK ULTRA going on at the time it I believe Manson def got LSD experiments in prison and I think Manson is scummy enough to be a snitch. The Black Panthers thing is believable if you look at the MOVE and Panther CI's with the FBI I wouldn't put it past the LAPD, LASD. It's an interesting book but all the conspiracy theories can't all be true. It's got some odd coincidences.

Dr Phil Goode 👹🌲🔥

I’m so glad they are covering this book. I just read it a couple of months ago. It’s fantastic. The level or research this guy does. I felt it paints a picture of Manson being another sort of “victim” of the MK ULTRA experiments and the FBIs efforts to thwart the progressive movement in the 60s. Thereabouts, at least.

Matthew Solomon

I got this book a while ago and actually DNF’d it after about 1/3. I got annoyed that he wasn’t really proving anything to me 😂😭

Cam 🛸

This is my first extra episode as I've only just subscribed after spending months working my way through the back catalogue. Sadly I couldn't get to use the Welsh name I wanted to to confuse Jimmy but I love all their shows. It's great to finally join the Turkey gang.

Justin Glover

The podcast "True Anon" did a two part interview with Tom and I highly recommend giving it a listen

Jared

Not related to this episode but what STM episode was “I GOT A MORTGAGE!”

Rysaun Ralston Roach

I can’t even begin to imagine how pure the LSD was back in the 60’s when it was legal, especially the Owsley sunshine.

Jeff Stanton II

If anyone is interested in further reading, look into the Jakarta Method.

This Guy

As a communist, this book was a great read. I love learning about how the U.S. empire will go to any length to preserve capitalism, even murder of the young and innocent.

This Guy

This was a really great book! It was also really interesting to discover how many other celebrities (not just Brian Wilson) had connections to Manson, and in some way, these horrible events.

Kristin Morris

Love these kinds of episodes!
