BONUS - SMALL TOWN MURDER - THE COLLYER BROTHERS

This week, James and Jimmie discuss the strange tale of two recluse brothers who hoard 150 tons of garbage in their house. Things get very weird when one is dead, and the other is missing!

Comments

Yes, Grey Gardens!! And a spoof documentary with Fred Armisten and Bill Hader - Sandy Passage (Documentary Now). Highly recommended

Catherine Paz

Love this as we have a antique walnut gynecologist table.. with brass stirrups as a TV stand ... 🤷‍♀️🙃

Chrissy Pinheiro

It’s unfortunate they didn’t know Edie and Eve Bouvier (?) Aka the relatives of Jackie Kennedy Onassiss. They never left their massive home, and lived in squalor and a filthy hoard. There’s a documentary as well as a movie about them.

Alisun Shyn 🇨🇦

That’s so sad!

Carey Turner

Same!

Carey Turner

This is heart breaking and tear inducing.

Kak Anna (mardbh)

Couldn’t wait to hear this one!

Ryan Selland

What a wonderful doctor! Need more like them around.

Heidi & Qtip!

Have to admit, i can understand wanting to be left alone. Nit a fan of people.

Lee Clemente

This was amazing. More weird dives into weird people for sure!!

Ricki Gibson

One of my all-time favorite episodes. Absolutely fascinating story, thanks for sharing!

ShortySmalls

What a wild episode… second time listening… great job J&J

Matt Eberhardt

Crazy! The two brothers where highlighted in the S6 E17 Frasier! Heard your Patreon and watched this Frasier episode on the same day 😬

Laura

My godmother's house was like that until part of the floor in her bedroom gave way. She then moved into a trailer and hoarded that as well. It took her kids almost 3 months to clean everything after she died.

Liz Rutherford

Yes! They should do an episode on them.... fascinating story!

Kelly Redmond

I have a neighbor who's house is like this and she can't get into it. She has been living in her little car out front of the house. The car is so full of shit that she can only see out half of the front windows and the drivers door window. She has been in the car for 5 years now. People bring her food everyday.

Brandy Martin

*Loud crash near dinnertime* Homer - "Oh shit...."

Ben Bryant

That was my first thought

Carol King

This story was so crazy and unbelievable that I went on Amazon and I bought the book. I’ve got to read the book and my husband thinks I’m a hoarder not even close but when they said clean your house, I look around and I think yeah I need to clean my house, but I have a bunch of medical issues but at least I can walk in it and get around in it, I just have too much stuff to get rid of when you think of hoarders you think of the people that just have so much garbage you can’t even walk through their house and this one was crazy I need to tell my husband this story and then he might think differently of me.

Carol King

You two are very good for mental health, I have some minor issues and listening to you is a breath of fresh air!

Esther Peerdeman

Just got my MIL's hoarding house cleaned out and I thought that was a lot (doing the math, it was about 32 to 40 tons) Crazy story! I cannot fathom it all.

Merp

Weird…

Mayra

Paper is wood redesigned and wood is heavy🙂

Jeffssis

Awesome!!

Lisa Yuknavage

I’d love to hear your take on Edith Bouvier Beale aka Grey Gardens.

Dyan Larsell

😂😂😂 sorry for your health struggles … i find your comments /incoherence/immediately realizing that incoherence so fun and wholesome! Also, long time listener of the pod…this story was on another level!!!

Aliyah Taylor

"Oh, you are SO 'that other one'!"

Sarah Zamenski

That story was fascinating! I hope you guys do some more history-type weirdness; I'm sure there's plenty of it out there 😬

Debbie Cheli

John Mulaney and Nick Kroll’s “Oh Hello on Broadway” was once described as “It’s like they’re the Collyer Brothers, with no piles of newspapers, but a trap-door from “The Diary of Anne Frank.”” I know understand that reference 😂

Joe Jacobbi

The eye hemorrhage could have been from undiagnosed diabetes. It will weaken small vessels and can cause them to burst, including those between the retina and the back of the eye. That's diabetic retinopathy and it's not reversible. Those blood vessels bursting is why diabetics can have problems with their feet and end up losing toes or parts of their feet. It affects their sensation of pain so they won't know their foot is injured

Erika Fultz

You might forget how heavy a bundle of news papers are

DGemme1000

Thank you for all your amazing content. I have a case recommendation from Sweden . It's a totally crazy case with a cult, religion, sex and murder. There is a 6 part mini series on HBO. It's called Knutby. Take care😀

Amelie Elggren

Tom Selleck ?

Swin

I got another one for you guys... I'm originally from Cleveland, Ohio and there was this story I used to always hear about some serial killer that was bisecting hobos down by the railroad. They always said Elliott Ness (he's a REAL guy from CLE) investigated the case, but it was never solved. The area where the bodies were piling up is a strip mall I think now (Poltergeist anyone?) There is an area near the haunted strip mall called the Flats. The entire Flats area is Cleveland's strip equivalent (I guess?). It's absolutely NOTHING like the strip (Shreveport at least has a casino). Every four years the entire flats goes bankrupt, it used to be as reliable as leap year. We always said it was "the curse". They converted the bus terminal downtown into a casino. Probably the only casino on Earth with a public subway stop under it. Well people will win and just walk out pretending they lost because guess what happens if you yell BLACKJACK!, a dude greets you in the LOBBY! Not the parking garage, I was told specifically the lobby because apparently it's unsecured and poorly lit and the only other way out ks through the basement past the ACTIVE subway station full of people who know a casino is over there head... YOU ALREADY KNOW WHAT IT IS!! I have a buddy named Pete that said he got sent home in his underwear from that casino years ago. They took his money then made him strip. I "of course" couldn't resist asking him if they touched him. That was like 2012, Pete hasn't spoken to me since for some reason - Once again, the curse Speaking of CLE "casinos" Google "Thistledown Racino" - I guarantee you will shit yourself laughing *Hint* when I was a kid I lived about 2 miles from the place and if the wind blew the right way it smelled like it was two blocks away, but back then it wasn't a casino. It was a horse track.

If you want a fucking EPIC episode of small town murder ping me. My wife's home town has a population of MAYBE 4000 (last time I checked was maybe twenty years ago so it may be 400 by now). Anyway the town is so small that if you make a deposit at the local (ATMless) bank it still takes 7-10 days to post. I sent her a check that she deposited Monday (ITS FUCKING THURSDAY!!!) The high school still has two home coming dances (one black, one white). Well the latest small town gossip around my house is that the town is in the midst of a full blown (100% internal) gang war with drive by shootings and the whole she-bang

Charles Davis

This is literally the first podcast I've ever listened beyond maybe 10 minutes into the first episode reason why - After a fair sample I think I can they ALL suck. Maybe you guys have recommendations that don't suck. Anyway here is a house warming gift for ya... PODCAST IDEAS I'VE ALWAYS WANTED TO HEAR... 7 Figures -Select anonymous house listings and describe in detail what 1 million dollars buys around the country. Most will be AWFUL of course Scornhub -Since the country quietly banned porn five minutes after COVID-19 ended, you watch the porn for your listeners and DESCRIBE it back to the audience book on tape style

Charles Davis

Couple of thoughts after re-listen - You say nobody would wear a zootsuit in 2024? Next time you guys swing through Cleveland, ask a local (Preferably black) WTF am I saying I like you guys and don't want you to DIE when I just found you DEFINITELY BLACK!! Anyway, ask your BLACK (I can't emphasize this enough!!) escort to take you on the EAST SIDE of town to pretty much ANYPLACE where black people OVER 30 (very important or you will also die) and you will see MULTIPLE zootsuits in every shape and hue imagineable If the first place doesn't have what you are looking for, just tell the guy these words... "Comedian to comedian, where can I see some people in zoot suits in 2024? I've heard rumors" Your esxort will know EXACTLY what you are looking for 😆😆

Charles Davis

I listened to this stoned Sunday and typed a shitload of comments. I went back to see what I was typing because I knew I commented more than once. So I'm reading MY OWN COMMENTS and I can't follow myself 😆 So now I'm listening again weed free. You guys have confused a daily smoker so badly with this story that I had to take my first day off since I moved to Vegas for the legal weed in 2017 (no bullshit, I counted) since I wasn't stoned and could. By the way, I went blind temporarily a few yeas ago from the same shit the brother had. Doc said it could have been avoided with weed and he specifically told me that MASSIVE DOSES OF VITAMIN C WOULD MAKE IT WORSE 😆😆😆! Poor old bastards.

Charles Davis

Okay, this is kind of gross, but no one ever talked about. Where did they go to the bathroom.....?????? Aaahhhhhh !!!!!!! Loved the show ❤️

violet

I loved this episode! As always fantastic research ! I live in NJ I had never heard of them.

Laura Errera

I had that eye hemmorage issue a couple of years ago. Doctor told me to smoke weed. Since I already smoked weed I took the liberty of inserting the word "more" in the middle of his sentence.

Charles Davis

Oh and let's not act like chromosomes just started being a thing in the 80's. I think Bob Durst, Donald Trump and several other NYC "blue bloods" are seeing way more "cousin dick" than the horribly stereotyped hillbillies/jillies.

Charles Davis

I have had to rewind this thing fifty times on some "Whathafughesay?". This is a weird story. I was picturing two Walter Hudson's being hauled out of either side of a rambler to be honest. Learn something new every day.

Charles Davis

Great episode

Jonas Skaaning

180 tons is literally a whale’s worth of junk 😭 I can’t

Torel Beard

Finding out their family comes from Livingston…which is my last name…please tell me I am not related to these people 😖

Ashley Livingston

Suddenly feel the need to clean my bedroom.

Nicky Bomberry

Coffee v.

Sherrie Seifert

I’m super upset that my last name is Steinway and Jimmie pronounced both my first and last name correctly on my call out and that these fools collected my family’s pianos and cursed the name of Steinway. JK - no direct relation. You’re WELCOME Jimmie for my easily pronounced name‼️

Winter Steinway

Loved this story. But now I have tp clean.

Rob Dean

I'm going to start TONIGHT, what IS in the back of my closet?

Anastasia C Morganello

Listened on way to sister’s. Told her everything! She said it sounds like a good story. I’ll try to get her on board with us here. :)

Cher Love Strong (#LocalWeedia)

It’s all connected

Rob Dean

Love your historical episodes, always opens new doors to amazing stories

Paul Lemmey

No…they were crazy.

Matthew Bolin

Wow that was a fascinating story. Very sad but so strange

Michele and Allen

How incredibly sad. I feel bad for the brothers, especially Homer. He must have been so scared, slowly dying alone.

Kathy Z

Wow!!! What a great episode guys!! I agree with the other comment! MERCH! “Go outside so you don’t get weird”

Babulous35

I thought the same thing!!

Babulous35

YEEESSS!!!

Babulous35

I need merch—“Go Outside So You Don’t Get Weird.”

Olivia Peterson

So Grey Gardens but men? Is that what I'm getting?

Gianna DeLuca

My son’s birthday is the same as Homer and my birthday is the same as Langley.

Sarah James

Bellevue is still going strong today as a hospital. It is one of the oldest hospitals in the country though but it is both psychiatric hospital and normal hospital but it’s been around for donkeys years though.

Paige Lovelace

there is definitely a 911 episode based off of this story

Erica B

This has to be one of my favorite episodes. Never heard of these brothers, it's absolutely fascinating.

Casey Renee

I need to look into that Agent Orange stuff as well I know it's a long shot for me but my grandfather did the same as your father and the amount of health issues my Aunt and Uncle have and me I swear something happened to us

Spencer L

Thank you so much for this episode. I have been fascinated by these gentlemen for years. I really enjoyed hearing your research on them.

Marisa Heacock

As Kramer once said.."I ain't going to no Bellevue". Were they crazy or was the rest of the word nuts..??

Davey Boy.

I woke up one day when I was 26 and lost most of my vision. It's fucking crazy. My dad dumped Agent Orange and I have a very rare eye condition. I've gotten used to it but I miss driving so bad. This is def a crazy story

Dr Phil Goode 👹🌲🔥

I had never heard of them and Oh my goodness…. 😭

Amanda Bauerschmidt

A great uncle of mine moved to Harlem in 1930. He talked about these 2 once and awhile. I moved to Harlem in 1996 and people still talked about them. Crazy shit!

Christopher Starks

An episode of SVU was loosely based on them too. Judd Hirsch and Wallace Shawn played the brothers. My husband is a firefighter, the few hoarder houses he’s been in are the most dangerous situation. Especially when they have old fireworks in the garage. 😬

Brianne Johnson

There's a great book by E.L. Doctorow "Homer & Langley.

Brent Fox

One of the best episodes ever!

Deborah Wales

I can’t believe I doubted Langley, he was there the whole time 😭 this one was wild, thanks guys!

Sabrina

Thank you for a very interesting and enjoyable episode. I love all the shows you do but it was nice to miss the blood and gore. Please keep up the good work. You are my favorite show. I am an 86 yo woman and wish you are my grandsons. I would like to take you on my lap, hug and do what grandmothers do. Maybe some cookies?

Faye E Bauman

They lived such a weird life. My heart honestly broke when I learned about Langley.

Lauren DG

I think Bellevue is still a normal hospital. They honestly were known for having a good ob/gyn department as late as the 1990s I think? I lived in NYC in the aughts, until after the 2008 crash. At one point I was about to lose my insurance, and I had this ongoing vasculitis thing where I had to see specialists. One of my doctors was like, "I also work at Bellevue, if you need to see me again you should go there, just make up an address in their catchment area." (The joys of US healthcare!) I think it's likely still a pretty standard public hospital, known for psych care because poor people with psych problems end up at public hospitals.

Grumpy Aunt

I hope you also listen to LPOTL because one of their hosts is into bones.

Grumpy Aunt

The first I had heard about the brothers was from Declan O'Rourke's song Langley's Requiem. As soon as you mentioned the 100 oranges I was taken back to the song and was blown away realizing it was the same brothers! The song is absolutely heartbreaking, but I absolutely recommend giving it a listen.

Rick

Me listening to this while cleaning my entryway… 😳

Susan DeNapoli

Was it both of them that retreated? I mean , not like anyone spoke to the brother to get his take on all of it . Maybe everyone assumed it was the two of them all the while the blind and paralyzed brother was like , “ what the fuck Langley”.

Mauricio Arcila

Highly recommend book Empty Mansions by Bill Dedman and Paul Clark Newell Jr.  which was actually referenced in a past STM book recommendation by Sarah. While not a story about hoarding like this one, definitely a story of excess wealth and a different kind of hoarding around the same time era. Would love the guys to do a Patreon. I found it fascinating and mind boggling

Adrienne

wow, I've never heard of this. Bonkers! On a personal note, I lost my elderly Aunt last June. We didn't find out until August. She was a hoarder and died in her apartment and we didn't know until the neighbor called about the smell. This was a heavy episode for me for obvious reasons. Wow. Thanks for sharing! And I will definitely go out tonight so I don't get weird.

Jeremy James

Who has the chair?!🪑

Tommy Duggan

When James mentioned the Collyer brothers I knew I had heard the name before but couldn’t place it… then I was watching my fave episode of Frasier and Frasier says he and Niles are going to be the collyer brothers lol

Kayla

Not gonna lie, this story scared the shit out of me. I’ve never heard anything about it before. Was stoned asf listening to it and it just got darker and darker. I had to pause and take a break 😂 NIGHTMARE FUEL

Madison Asbury

This is some Norman Bate's shit

Zach W

I was waiting for Jimmie’s reaction to them finding Langley’s body and he didn’t disappoint!

Lesley Slaney

Jimmie's horror at James divulging them finding Langley.🤣

Michelle Miller

Wow!

Rhonda CoueyBrisson

Another fascinating episode guys! Thank you. Note to self: Leave house and socialize (ugh).

Shelley

During lockdown I was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disorder and had to go on immunosuppressants so it was really dangerous for me to risk being exposed to COVID. I got all the vaccines and boosters but I was pretty anxious about going out. I really had to make myself leave the house and I did worry that if I didn’t get past it I would get weird. I’m happy to say that I did, although I’m still anxious in super crowded stores - even though I did get COVID, took the anti-viral and was just fine (with the worst cold I’d ever had but still). I also work at home so I do go to the gym and/or get outside every day.

Rhonda Webb

Oh wow crazy stuff

Felicia Tarnes

The eye issues ! I’m diabetic and have been subject to shots in m eyes because of the possibility of hemorrhaging no fun but not blind so I’m take it lol

Two 0' Clock High

We're all weird. Life has been flipped upside down for so many people. It is very hard. 💛🖤✨️

E. Vonne.

I genuinely hope your uncle is okay. But is it weird that I still want to have coffee with him?

E. Vonne.

All over the world. Western media tends to make a spectacle of it, similar to side show freaks.

E. Vonne.

This was sooo weird but good

Wrae Sanders

Here’s a video on the case: https://youtu.be/81jV9D8FiFA

Peter Melling

I can only imagine the putrid smell in their house

Stephen Tot

Yo. I have animal bones as well. But it's because I find them fascinating and live in Colorado where they're easily found. Wet specimens (organic samples ranging from tiny samples or partial pieces to parts of organs to full on skeletons, fetus' or non viable samples. kept in a clean, preserving liquid and jar) are actually a trend. It's annoying when people do it for the aEsThEtIcS but won't even touch or look. They are what our younger selves would call POSERS. Genuinely sounds like these men had severe mental health illness that were not explored or even talked about. (Given the time, obviously.) There is SO MUCH to be explored about that relationship. The psychology, why Langley held onto Homer's sight coming back, the tunnels and hoarding.... I seriously am going to see if I can find more from a psychological end on this because that's devastating and ... wow. I wonder if there's some seed of this, in the Two Sentence Horror Stories episode "Crush" on Netflix.

E. Vonne.

Source? Genuinely asking because this is *very* interesting, from a mental health standpoint point- obviously from a 2024 perspective.

E. Vonne.

I am sure there are many people living like this all over America, but because they might own less space or be in a rural area, they aren't as well known or never get "found out".

Chaya Radin

My uncle Byrd is a hoarder. He lives in Olympia WA and has a dead school bus and an airplane wing in his yard. Stacks of newspapers in the house and who knows what else. He’s a super nice guy but he did way too much acid in the 60s and he has a hard time. Glad he doesn’t have an entire brownstone to fill with garbage.

Molly S

😩 I also have to tell myself to go out so I don’t get weird. But man it’s hard 😫😫

Meagan Goree

Love these ones can’t wait to hear it

Kade Barakat

They were mulatto. European Africans. That's why they stayed to themselves, live in Harlem and never married.

Vicki Camacho

Looking forward to this one. The story is just so..... so nuts.

Cheri Holland

Love all your shows. How do I signed up for your stupid options patreon or does it not exist yet?
