Suede Does Something Serious

Where's the fair use? A good question, but what else should we be asking?

I was fully expecting to pay for XS videos. As a matter of fact, it is why I put the limit on my offer as I did; expecting that I would be paying for the XS videos *as well as* the reviews. (Bah. I forget that hitting 'enter' means that you send your message. As such, forgive the edit; I wanted to add more to this) I not only *expected* to pay for the XS videos, but I *wanted* to be able to pay for them. You are a reviewer who, to me, idealizes why I am a patron: I like your work. I want more of your work. I want to make sure that you can afford to do more of your work. Therefore, I am putting money toward you to pay for that work. If you went to a monthly payment, all that would do is make me adjust how much I was paying you; instead of paying 'per video', I'd just be paying the amount I hoped/expected to pay 'per month'. And I have been considering upping the amount I pay for simply because I *expected* to be paying every month, as you came out with your content every month (or week, or whatever).

Same.

This has been troubling me for years since the sound got removed from a video making fun of Advent Children and I realized there was absolutely no alternative for the person who made it to post it anywhere on the internet. The trouble is ads are not a good way to make money because people hate them. It sucks to have to give money to a giant corporation so that they'll spare the product/person you actually support a few pennies. The trouble with subscriber services is... manifold. The obvious one is that it cuts off people who don't have any money for leisure activities, which I find tends to be the most creative subset of potential viewers, the ones who are self employed or work for small businesses. (Like yours truly, I have no disposable income even though I have a job and live with my parents, what I owe in insurance and other expenses is more than I make every month. The only reason I can subscribe to artists on patreon is because I do have savings, for the moment. I was just thinking about this problem today actually; I decided so long as I have a few dollars to spare I shall happily send them to the likes of Lindsay Ellis and co, especially since she no longer has a website and Patreon is the only way I can reliably find her videos.) The other is subscriber platforms are really hard to reach out to viewers from. You'd still be stuck using YouTube just to try to find people. Right now I think there's just no way for a rival platform to make money so there's no reason for a company to invest in one. So, I don't have any answers save this one: just have people donate by the month Suede. For some people I really appreciate the per video option (it's real fair), but anyone following you at this point would probably be wiling to pay monthly. The only reason not to is if the sense of obligation would become so crippling (and this is something I can totally understand, I have this problem myself) that it would stop you from working. Also, maybe if you did it by month Patreon would start sending me e-mails when you put up videos again.

There are a few things you could do if you wanted to change the payment methods. You could change to a monthly version. You could do it for every video. You could do it for only one XS per month, for a double payment on months where you release a major video.

I would also be up for it, because the reviews take so much time and it would be better for you to have some income between them.

I agree, I misread it and thought I would be paying per video too. They might not be full reviews, but a lot of effort is put into XS still, and I would be totally fine with paying for them.

I would be fine paying for XS. When I first signed up, I actually thought that I was paying per video, not just per full-blown review.

Thank you so much for making this video! It's really important to know that fair use is a court defense and not a right, but not a lot of people are mentioning that, so I'm glad that you decided to bring that up! I don't like the situation going on over at YouTube at all just like most people. But you should get all of your information straight before you decide to try to fight the system. Nobody is exactly spreading misinformation, but in leaving out the details about what fair use really is, a lot of people(mostly younger people) are jumping the gun a bit. Not to mention you brought up excellent points about how YouTube has no real obligations to bend to fair use! Thanks again for adding to #WTFU with facts that aren't being discussed as much as they should!
