Progress Update: 1/27/23

Oh god, I have miscalculated.

When I gave an estimate of five hours, I knew that it was a conservative estimate, but I undershot more than I thought. This week, Ryan showed me the total length of what he's completed so far for this episode, and it comes out to five hours.

However, those five hours only encompass the first 24 sections. This video will be 27 sections long, not including the introduction and credits, and the longest section by far is in the final three. This means that, by my estimations, the video will likely be closer to six hours long than five.

So what does this mean for the release schedule?

This shouldn't affect the release much at all, actually. The vast majority of the work for the whole video is already completed, and one hour more of video isn't terribly strenuous to edit compared to researching and writing it.

The most interesting thing that I accomplished this week is a partial read-through with two members of the CCP community team, Convict and Swift. Both have extensive experience in the game, and it's been fun to hear their tangible excitement when going over it together. Their feedback has been helpful, clarifying a few points, but the biggest thing that they've given me is confidence that I've managed to adequately present complicated events in the game in a truncated format. Frankly, I'm amazed with how little they've had to correct, and I've even gotten to teach them a few new things, which is vindicating in its own way. We'll be meeting next week to finish up the rest.

That's about it, I'll see you all next week!

This isn't true to my knowledge, 804R, but even if it were, the retention on my videos is good enough that I believe that it still is in my best interest to release it as a single video.

Ryan has the correct answer. Watch time on a video is paramount in the current algorithm, and a second part will have far less watch time due to natural viewer attrition. It's better to release it as a single piece to concentrate that watch time onto a single video.

Fredrik Knudsen

Are you sure about that? Last I heard the algorithm prioritizes watchtime and % watchtime, so someone leaving after an hour (having seen only ~16% of the video) would be pretty disastrous.

804R

YouTube algorithm doesn't play nicely with this. Better for creators to release in one go.

Have you considered releasing this in several parts? I mean, I'LL definitely watch it, for sure, but I can also feel myself dreading to click on a six hour long video. I'll just watch it in chunks, but I imagine that the runtime will scare off a lot of new people.

Can't wait

The video will be so long that I will die at the 2/3rds point from old age and my son will have to carry on my journey.
