So I feel like your missing a crucial point of the times. A woman cannot have any sort of affectionate contact with men who are not her siblings or husband. So first episode you said they’d need to kiss in public. That would be a scandal and she’d be ruined and considered a whore. In this episode you said their knuckles barely touched. That is a big step for the times. Maybe because Anthony is out having Alex with the opera singer it seems like sex is no big deal but the singer is a low class woman who isn’t considered a lady or eligible for marriage. High class ladies can’t be alone to long with men who aren’t their husbands or brothers without fear of possible gossip deeming them a whore and ruining them for marriage.

However, Penelope has been hence why she is stressed and devastated about Colin and Marina's union.
