The lake house is where they did all the experiments at with Meredith so that's why it's important. The room was made for it and the whole place is mountain ash surrounding it so all of these events makes it important.

Trying to protect Beaconhills from supernatural beings because they are "inheritably violent" but doing so by hiring violent assassins (some who are professionals that have been doing it for decades) is contradictory.
