Suede's Pokémon Journey, Episode 80

Comments

I had watched every episode as a kid up until the league actually started missing all the important stuff in the end. Seeing Ash lose would’ve broken my mind as a kid but because I missed that I only ever expected perfection as taught in schools until long after dropping out of college and now compelled to strive for perfection anyway out of habit/anxiety. All the dialogue would’ve gone over my head back then but the act of losing would’ve been enough to get the idea across at least.

The Kanto journey finale, not the best season ever but not bad either. Satoshi/Ash definitely is a better Trainer and character today but that is thanks to all the experience he gained since Kanto

Well, there's a problem with that since there's not much he really could do. That's the point I'm trying to get across. The characters and narrative try to say Ash should do something to make Charizard obey him without offering any kind of solution. Misty, Brock, Tracey, or literally anyone could have suggested a way for Ash to make Charizard obedient, but they didn't, making it come across as they or the writers couldn't come up with a solution either. Plus, while the show plays off Ash's injuries by Charizard for comedy, it's still basically a dragon who's willing to set Ash on fire for annoying him. Basically, the only suggestion I've been seeing is Ash should have asserted dominance over Charizard by having Pikachu beat the crap out of it, which seems pretty damn iffy to me. It's one thing someone to defeat Charizard in battle, but it would seem kinda abusive for Ash to sick Pikachu on Charizard to make him fall in line, which makes the suggestion sound worse when remembers who Charizard's previous trainer was. Still, now this makes me picture an AU where when the ref declares Ritchie the winner because Charizard's unwilling to fight, Ritchie says, "Flag that" and has Sparky attack with Thunderbolt, eventually leading to him giving the big lizard a slice of humble pie.

That’s kinda what ended up happening. Until Pooiwrath, Charizard was never actually defeated since he evolved. The clone doesn’t count because of the reset button. Any other time he lost was refusal to battle, which to him isn’t the same

He should’ve tried anything is my answer. With how often Charizard was left out of the group, it wouldn’t be too surprising if some bitterness built up because of that.

Fair. My issue is the narrative seems to be saying, "This wouldn't have happened if Ash trained Charizard better", which brings me back to the "How?" question. Like, it seems the only way to have Charizard become obedient again would be to have it get its butt kicked to make it realize it was overconfident, kinda like what happens with Tad down the line.

Verdant Range

I'm not the one to ask as I DON'T think Ash should have trained him better 😆 to me, Charizard WAS ash's failings as a trainer manifest. Like, ashs weakness was always bullheadedness and overconfidence so having his downfall be a bullhead and overconfident pokemon was perfect, even if he couldn't have really done much to train him himself.

There's one thing that's always bugged me. An unanswered question that I feel comes up when people say, 'Ash should have done more to train Charizard.' That question is, 'How?' Really, this is something that bugged me, even when I was a kid. How is one supposed to deal with a belligerent fire-breathing dragon, especially when at that point it's Ash's strongest Pokémon? Seriously, I pretty much never get an explanation for Ash should have gotten Charizard under control. Should he have said, "Charizard, you're overly cocky and not invincible" and prove it by having Pikachu defeat it? If anyone has a better idea, please tell me.
