2025-10-11 02:23:36 +0000 UTCI think I can really say why. For some reason western media has or had this weird fascination with mispronouncing certain names for reasons that I never could fathom. For example, in Gundam SEED Destiny we are introduced to a character named Lunamaria, now the original Japanese sub pronounced it how you would normally pronounce the name Maria as muh-REE-uh. But for some reason the dub went with MaR-E-uh, they made a lower-case sounding letter into an upper-case sound for...no apparent reason. As again if you listen to the Japanese, they pronounced it as muh-REE-uh. Which is how it is pronounced in the original English, and I think Spanish as Maria is one version of the Spanish pronunciation of the English name Mary.
