Suede's Pokémon Journey: Episode 92

The Joy Of Pokémon

THIS IS NOT A PAID POST

Yay, Almond Joy! Too bad the two excellent episodes about Nurse Joy happened to come out in an order that meant they got the title the other one should have gotten!

I still think Tracey went about it in absolutely the wrong way, coming across as acting more knowledgeable than the trained professional (rather than just asking questions), but maaaaybe I'd rethink using the term "mansplaining". It just reminded me a lot of how woman are trusted less in both scientific and emergency situations, but I get the evidence wasn't as compelling as I made it out. The lifejacket criticism is completely legit, though, so who knows? Maybe I'll do a Screw-ups video about Orange League after all!

Suede

I need to be honest here, this is the one episode of Suede's Pokemon Journey I dislike. I find the way that Suede treated Tracey when he spotted signs of a hurricane incoming were overly harsh and sexist based on the terms he used. I also found he was far too casual with his dismissal feelings and siding with Joy's judgement far too easily. Now, don't misunderstand. Tracey was in the wrong in not trusting the judgement of a professional and trying to go out on the water to "rescue" her was an extremely bad decision, but this ignores several factors that I found Suede ignored. Is Almond Joy super strong and knows how to handle a lot of situations to the point where she can casually kayak from island to island? Yes. However, this isn't a mere storm were talking about here, but a hurricane. As in a storm with wind speeds at a minimum of 119 kmph, and such storms tend to be far more intense out on the ocean. Secondly, the episode demonstrates very poor water safety since absolutely no one here wears a life vest or any other safety equipment while going out into, and I feel the need to reiterate this, a hurricane in the middle of the ocean. No life vest. No emergency transponder, no tether tying her to the kayak, not even a simple rescue can. It's seems really bad to me that this professional life saving individual demonstrates less proper water safety than flipping' Baywatch of all things. Even Mitch Buchannon, at his most OP in the writing, never did anything like what Joy did here. I feel Suede over empathized with Joy over the story's moral while not addressing the negative traits of her or the episode. If anyone, man, woman, or any other gender told me they were going to go kayaking in the middle of a hurricane with no life vest, I'd at least question their methods, if not their sanity. The lesson of trusting an experienced professional is a good one, the execution is very poor.
