I maintain that Syther is way cooler than Scizor - a giant mantis with blades for arms is much more impressive then a red whatever-it's-supposed to be with boring pincher hands. Plus, scythes are more badass than scissors.

I think this was one of the first instances to show that Pokemon aged like any other animal (the surfing Pikachu was the other one). Also, I know he's not your favorite Suede, but Tracey is one of my favorites, so that probably also helped.
