I played a lot of the Dynasty Warriors games growing up and really enjoyed the legendary warriors and battles. Even though I know there was a lot of embellishment it was still awesome. I do remember their being heavenly mandates and references to the seal of the emperor as well.

The emperors were considered intermediaries between heaven and earth, and it was their responsibility to conduct ceremonies to maintain harmony with the heavens and honor the ancestors, which is also a moral obligation of Confucianism. I previously talked about the "mandate of heaven" which is necessary for a ruler to be legitimate, and it can be determined by how well they rule, as well as uncontrollable factors like the presence or absence of disease, famine, warfare. Many times, as dynasties fell, they were perceived to have lost the mandate, which might accelerate the overthrow through rebellion. And rebellion itself is also a bad omen. On the other hand, emperors were often deified after death. ....... The specific dynasty that most closely fits this anime is the Ming Dynasty, 1368-1644, but the organization of the concubines follows that of the Tang Dynasty, which immediately preceded it. There are other anachronisms that make the Ming Dynasty not an exact match, but the layout of the palace closely resembles the Forbidden City, which was built during the Ming Dynasty. ...... Hard to explain, but I think Jinshi's gesture expressed his supposed romantic interest in Maomao, Lady Gyokuyou's I think symbolises being under her protection and expressing her appreciation for Maomao.
