That shot that Mai dealt to Nobara may seem cheap, but it's a good strategy for someone who was unfortunately born with a lot of cursed energy despite not having the talent to use cursed techniques. In a way, Maki was dealt a better hand, being born without cursed energy, yet has immense talent and superhuman abilities. You might wanna try working on having an unbiased mindset when it comes to who to root for in the Tokyo VS Kyoto school fights, because in a lot of ways all the applicants are formidable fighters that deserve a chance at winning just as much as their opponent, including Mai. Frankly, it's not right that this show somewhat treats Kyoto students like they're more in the wrong when they have their own issues that's harder to deal than their opponents can imagine. If someone like Maki was able to take a moment to actually walk in Mai's shoes, or Panda in Mechamaru's; would they really be able to brush things off as easily afterwards? I don't know =( all in all, I think it's good to show a little support for the "opposing" team, even if some of them do come across as a little harsh.

Good point, her being actually forced to follow her sister in becoming a jujutsu sorcerer by her family would certainly weigh heavy on her emotionally, and it certainly would make it much worse.

I might be wrong here but I think when the head of the Zenin clan tells Maki "Then I'll put you through ordeals befitting that. And Mai too." that may be supposed to imply the clan forced Mai to become a Jujutsu sorcerer whenever Maki left. So she might not have had much of a choice, which would make her situation even worse.
