You really get a sense of finality while watching the goodbye, because the fact of the matter is, if Riko and Reg are as determined to reach the bottom as they say they are, then Riko really will NEVER be able to come back home again. She didn't make any over the top childish promises of someday seeing them again, she just gave them as much peace of mind of the situation as possible by stating what she truly believes; that they will be connected by the Abyss, for as long as their story lasts. Hell, even though Reg can technically climb back up without being phased by the Curse, he might never want to leave Riko at the bottom for an extended period of time; it depends on how capable she becomes at avoiding danger in the future. And as far as we can tell, Nat and others have no aspirations to go to the netherworld, as doing so would basically mean abandoning their friends, families, livelihood, and giving up any possible dreams they have up on the surface, like Nat's dream of opening up an orphanage.
They basically just can't follow someone with such extreme aspirations; Riko's curiosity and optimism just makes her shine too brightly for them. Though maybe... that's exactly why she's needed in the Netherworld =) however dark the dark gets, she's sure to brighten it up a bit.

Ah yes, this talk about being connected by the abyss is quite DEEP indeed!
