I wouldn't recommend skipping recaps from this point, since they'll sometimes add stuff between certain parts; sometimes the narrator also drops some new philosophical jargon that's worth analyzing. Also, I wouldn't call the previous episode slow; the story is in the details, and there were quite a few new details that you learned, during Reg's first Cave Raid for example.
Anyway, while THIS episode was admittedly a bit slow compared to the last, it's not without its good moments; one thing I find interesting is that we often hear Reg's thoughts about situations and mysteries, probably because he started out with no memories and lacks knowledge of the Abyss, yet still seems to retains the personality of someone who's a naturally speculative type of thinker. But he's also quiet, reserved, and very cautious, unlike Riko who's always been very knowledgeable despite coming across as ditsy, and is always speaking her mind in a way that highlights her genuine excitement at discovery new things up front and personal, wanting to impart her wisdom onto others to share in that excitement. Their opposing personalities are highlighted very well in this episode, especially at the end where they're overlooking the second layer. It's episodes like these that partly shows just how much the two need each other.
You should know, next episode is were things really start to pick up. Man, I can't wait, I almost wish you'd watch the recap movies just so we could see everything at once =|
Btw, the gag with Rikos cooking is that it is actually delicious, but often looks horrible enough to be called "irredeemable" (that's Reg's catchphrase btw XD). I feel like the anime did not quite capture that well enough, but that's really my only complaint with it.
