There's a theme on display in this episode, with the culture of the cave raiders, and Riko especially. It comes up when Reg is shaken by his potential to have killed Riko with the Incinerator and what that weapon might mean about what he is, and again with the issue of the corpse-weeper's meat. In both cases, Riko dismisses his concerns - in awe of power and potential the Incinerator, and full acceptance of both the cave raiders' and the creatures' roles in the Abyss' ecology. Even where in some cases it might seem irresponsible, she looks upon things with wonder rather than fear. It's an interesting theme of perspective that runs underneath a lot of things in this series.

Must say, I love when they give techniques in anime English and then also need to translate them into Japanese, and then they just write what basically amounts to synonyms in the subtitles.
Also to answer you question about the curse (though I've got no source to confirm it, which spoiler wise is a good thing I suppose), I don't think going down loosens the effects of the curse, and if it does, it's not by much.
