Auto-Tailor - page 2 - Process

Since the colors and shading were done by my partner, Jade, I'm going to talk more about other aspects of my process in more detail.

1. This page uses a three-panel layout, two close-ups and then one full-shot. This is a good approach when you want to show that a process is happening and then show the full result. This is just a thumbnail so I'm not concerned with getting the proportions just right here. Thumnbails are quick and dirty, just to work out the layout and concept.

2. Now I finalize the proportions of the character and rough in the final concept for the clothing. Conceptually, I'm trying to communicate that this machine isn't just grabbing stock clothing and putting it on the customers; it's creating and extruding the clothing as needed.

3. Now I go in and add the final pencil work, adding final details to the environment and drawing the characters in full detail. I'm trying to keep the details frilly but simple because I'll have to draw them multiple times and keeping them simple keeps the workflow efficient.

4. Then I ink everything, using a couple of different pens (one with a blunt tip, for outer edges, and one with a fine tip, for fine detail). I'm using a variety of fonts for the dialogue. I use Anime Ace for most dialogue but I switched to a more dynamic font for shouting and a clearly robotic font with more rectangular balloons and jagged tails for the computer.
