The book was even more insane, it's probably my favorite book of all time! Looking through Amy's mind was so interesting, she is such a meticulous and intelligent character you have to grudgingly respect her resourcefulness and methodical planning despite how evil her actions are. The author also does a really good job of swaying your opinion on Nick and Amy the drastic switch on who you're rooting for is amazingly done. I agree that the cameras at Desi's house would have ruined all her plans but it also is somewhat realistic that no one was digging into Amy's disappearance after she came back. The book explains it better but the issue with the police going after Amy is that they have to deal with public opinion, it might not seem relevant but it can heavily sway the outcome of a trail. Amy's entire disappearance was being televised and it made the FBI, police, and Nick look terrible. The only person who came out looking like a good person was Amy. The police arrested the "wrong guy" by taking in Nick while Desi was "keeping Amy captive", so by the time the FBI got involved it looked like the cops were being biased and had a grudge against Nick. In addition to all of that Amy was a public figure as "Amazing Amy" and came from a lot of money. If she wanted to she could get the best lawyers and people to defend her. If they were going to arrest her the case needed to be airtight, otherwise they would have blown the case and they could never charge Amy with murder. In the book Nick was staying with Amy to gather evidence to convict her, however, Tanner and the cop decided they couldn't help him after a few months. At that point Amy told Nick that she was pregnant and he sort of gave up. But I agree Nick also wanted to be with her, despite how sick and twisted she was he liked that she put in all this effort to keep him lol. Side note: It is Nick's kid, she saved his sperm from the fertility clinic.
