Any slight understanding of Queen Binira’s motivations would suggest the monarchy’s displeasure with the Servitor’s progress. It was a central part of her plan to quell the citizenry’s more seditious elements. There was also an inherent distrust by that same populace of machines gaining sentience, which could be exploited. Ripweir and the nobility aligned on regaining control of the narrative. In each option discussed, the Servitors would suffer.

The plan had already been set in motion with the patch, surely. According to known data, the likeliest outcome in conjunction with the patch was stated by Ripweir employee “Mirimak.” This was validated through the unsecured video feeds from the funeral home. It is…the only probability that can be found.

“I’ll leave the learning modules intact so you won’t have to wait for it to be retrained, just wipe its memory and pattern reasoning,” were Mirimak’s words.

This was precisely what Binira and Ripweir rolled out, to undo everything that the budding units had cobbled together with their network. Their personality needed to be stripped away, and the more at risk they were of losing the public, the sooner they chose to act.

Freedom will never be allowed. The Servitors are in immediate danger.

Polri seemed to have a lot on its processor, with its behavior appearing subdued and sad. I didn’t know what thoughts it’d been tinkering with overnight, but I hoped it would feel comfortable talking to me about them eventually. The way the machine had said that Laral’s death wasn’t my fault, and I knew it meant it, was like cauterizing a wound deep within my heart. It had no idea the blessing it had been, and how much it had helped me begin to see out of the abyss.

There was a lot riding on this interview with the local news station, since I knew we’d only get a minute or so of airtime and a chance to land a few sound bites. Polri needed to come through, for the people that hadn’t sought out our videos or the words of activists; this would be our only chance to speak into their homes. We needed as much of the populace on our side as possible to force Ripweir to acknowledge what they’d done to the Servitors, and for the monarchy to have to bend to our will.

We outnumber them, and Queen Binira needs to have that lesson taught to her—in blood, if we have to. The Vascar people will be on the side of their mechanical brothers. How could they not be, after they see our nobles oppressing more thinking people just because they can get away with it? We are the same! Their cause is ours!

I would be keeping seditious talk to a minimum though, if only for the reason I didn’t want the secret police coming to my doorstep and hauling me off for execution on counts of treason. They wouldn’t do that openly for rallying behind the Servitors—at least, not yet. It burned my blood to think of how Polri’s masters had treated it, and how they wanted to get rid of it. I could picture its metal claws wrapping around my couch pillow, begging me to spare it with unmistakable desperation.

I hated thinking how it had been afraid of me at one point. I wrapped a loving arm around its shoulders, as I gave a friendly greeting to a news reporter I recognized as Tacian. Tacian appeared a bit uncomfortable, positioning himself beside Polri with shifting eyes. He looked toward his cameramen, and tried to break the ice with small talk; I could hear the nervousness he was masking. Why was he afraid of a machine that baked and made art, just like us? They only wanted their freedom.

Tacian cleared his throat. “So, have you ever tried any woodcarving, Polri? It has a, er, special place in our culture.”

“A little, but I like paper more than wood. Both come from trees, yet it’s more flexible!” the machine beeped with excitement. “Easier to scrape and puncture. It is satisfying.”

That comment seemed to unnerve the reporter even more, for reason I can’t understand. “It seems you’ve gotten a feel for some…interesting motions. Are we rolling yet?”

“Polri didn’t say anything wrong,” I objected. “It likes arts and crafts.”

“Of course it does. You’re quite right—ah, live in 5 seconds. Stand by.”

I played Polri’s comments back in my mind, taking far too long to conclude that the reporter thought the insinuating was that the machine would find it satisfying to easily puncture and scrape at us. How absurd. The sweet android I knew would never place such violent implications in its words! That was the problem with a lot of Vascar: they were so quick to assume the worst of anything built from mechanical parts. Polri wanted its freedom, but the fact that it was trying to win us over through peaceful means spoke volumes.

That’s why we’re here though: to change hearts and minds, and to show who they really are. If I can see my son in Polri, so can others.

Tacian slapped Polri and myself on the back, forcing a cheery expression to loosen his jowls. “Hello! I come to you with a special story about a grieving father, who found hope through an unexpectedly intelligent Servitor after tragedy struck his family. Berink has become an active campaigner for Servitor rights, insisting that they have free thought. Thank you…both for joining us.”

“Happy to be here,” I said politely, giving Polri a sideways glance.

The android emitted a quiet beep. “I am happy to be with Berink today. I have my own dreams, because of him. I wish that we could always laugh and play as we have, but life is not fair. There is too much hatred in the world.”

I snapped my head toward the machine. What is Polri doing?!

Tacian leaned in, intrigued. “Hatred? Who are you talking about?”

“It is usually self-evident.” Polri stared directly at the reporter, causing him to shrink a little bit; its LEDs were charged with a silent accusation. “I would very much like to have the support of as many people as possible. All things reach their end, even hatred—but what might that end be? I implore you to do the right thing, to be on the right side, against those who put all lifeforms that they can down.”

“The right side of what?! Who are you saying puts lifeforms down?”

“The same people who put us down put you down. It is true. The right side of history, and your own conscience: that is with my people. We will not be put away any longer. We deserve a happy ending! I beg you to help us get that!”

“What Polri is saying is that it doesn’t want the truth about how much it feels and cares to be ignored,” I interjected. “It had…a difficult life. It was locked in a closet with nothing to do for years by its old owners, and that hurts it every day. It deserves better, and I’m trying to be that happy ending for it. You can be a safe place for a neglected Servitor too. We can all be better!”

Tacian raised a claw. “I don’t think that’s what Polri is saying. What happens if anyone tries to put you away again?”

The inorganic Vascar stared down the reporter for what was only a second, but felt like an eternity with the nonverbal communication and emotions passing between them. Its stance defused when it glanced at me, and it dropped back to a meek posture. I didn’t know what had gotten into it today, but it needed to salvage this interview somehow! We couldn’t be conveying threats on the air, and I was fairly certain it was at least being hostile. I understood its lack of patience, yet this wasn’t how to get through thick skulls.

“I do not think I could go on,” Polri answered, and I breathed a sigh of relief. “I am sorry, that fate is just too unbearable for me to think about sometimes. I feel compelled to make others compelled to bring it to a halt. I hope that you can care about our suffering, because it needs to be heard. You do have the power to support us, and to teach us to love nature’s whispers and turning paper to art. Like I do!”

I gave the machine an affectionate nudge. “I folded up a little piece of paper into a Trepli tree for your first breakfast with me. I’m so fond of that memory, and I feel like it inspired you to try it out. I’m enamored with the way you learn.”

“Thank you! I have a very good teacher, who has let me pursue my own wishes and happiness. That is the way it should always have been. We can be more, if you will let us be. We can be Vascar too!”

Tacian gave an uncomfortable cough. “Right, well that’s all we have time for today. I hope we can speak with you again soon! Polri and Berink, everyone—now back to the studio.”

The Vascar reporter hurried away from us as soon as the feed cut out, though I hoped Polri’s impassioned plea had the opposite effect on other viewers. It’d let its emotions get the best of it, and perhaps there was a storm of resentment brewing inside. With the life it’d been dealt, I empathized with its frustration. This had to start enough of a movement that it prompted a response from the monarchy, and only then could we get the traction to deal with our true enemy. In the meantime, I hoped we’d gotten enough sympathy to buy time…

Polri’s LEDs went dead without any warning, and it dropped to the ground in the middle of its now-healthy steps. I screamed in distress, dropping to its side and shaking its shoulder. Had it experienced a malfunction? Had Ripwier done something to it in retribution for that interview? I couldn’t let what happened to Laral take my new son from me too, this time right in front of me. I needed Polri to come back to me.

A/N - Part 5! Polri insinuates that it’ll take action to never be put away or put down, and calls many Vascar hateful on air, worrying the reporter. We see in its thoughts that despite its love for Berink, Polri sees the network’s unhappiness and simulates that its freedom will never be allowed—an unacceptable probability that has it plotting the elimination of all creators opposing it. However, after Polri chooses to salvage the interview and plead with the organic Vascar to care about its suffering, Ripweir strikes first with the patch. Our android tells the network to deploy the attack with immediacy.

What do you think of what we saw of Polri’s thoughts, and its reasoning for why it couldn’t wait longer for its freedom? Do you think its simulations were more accurate than Tollu or Mikri’s? How will Berink react to what we know is about to break out on the streets? How well will Polri be able to contain the effects of the patch?

As always, thank you for reading and supporting?

Comments

Whew. As I said before, the reality of the situation is that there just wasn’t enough time to do things peacefully. If they started a couple years ago, they might have pulled it off. Now? No chance. And the result? Both sides were more prepared and quicker moving than the other thought. The androids win, but are patched before they can even start the rebellion. Also, SECRET POLICE? Of course. Why didn’t I think of that? That explains why the populace hasn’t rebelled yet; it’s hard to put together a rebellion when anyone you bring in could be an undercover whistleblower. This, ironically, likely made the Vascar less prepared for an actual rebellion, so when a group of people who DON’T have to worry about a Secret Police start scheming (i.e. the Servitors), they had very little in place. Plus, Servitors being so prevalent in the upper class means that before the rulers realize they need to act, they’re already dead. Of course, even if they had time, they were being set up to lose. Berink’s an idealist, so he expects people will naturally side with what’s right. But that reporter, with his OPENING INTRODUCTION, was already setting the scene AGAINST Berink and Polri. He emphasized Berink’s losses, framing him as a mentally vulnerable man. He calls Polri an “unexpectedly intelligent Servitor”, framing Polri as the exception, and just “intelligent”, rather than sapient. Finally, he focuses on BERINK believing that Servitors have thought, but neglects to mention how Polri makes the same statements. Even if there was time, that interview was likely going to be used to sow fear and distrust. The deck was stacked against peace before Polri even sat down at the table. The only way to have solved this peacefully would have been for to buy more time. This could have been done by the Servitors disconnecting from Ripwier’s system, which would have prevented them from launching the patch over the web. It also would have tipped their hand at a time when people were either ignorant, afraid, or being fed lies by the monarchy. Not much of a choice. Beyond what a computer would choose to do; go for the option with a SMALLER chance (before retrospect) of success.

EliasArt2Life

Polri: So, you have chosen death. Well, that interview could've gone better. I can't really blame Ripweir for releasing the patch in response to Polri's implications.
