The Nature of Predators - Krev DND (3/3)

First | Prev

The party followed Mavai to the edge of the hallway, catching a glimpse of the Trombil-built metal guardians. It was like looking at an armor stand, which made the motion seem unnatural; it wasn’t fully understood in Evrel how they were stitched together and acted on a directive, yet with a mind of their own. They were bound to the Slayers’ wishes to keep any unwanted visitors out, so there was no option to persuade them. It would be like convincing a forge not to smelt melt placed inside it; the only way through toward the sunsteel repository was to get past them.

“Finally! Some combat,” Blessa cheered. “Hey, the Trombil are like dwarves in this? I would roleplay a great dwarf.”

Juvrelor sighed. “What crazy—ahem, out of character—nonsense are you on about? We could try sneaking past the metal guardians, instead of risking death where it’s not necessary.”

“We can’t all burrow like Toddel.”

“She has a point,” the Smigli agreed. “You guys have fun with those big metal guys. I’m chilling. See you in the next room; I might have to carry if you all die.”

Lenelda snorted, lips curling up enough to reveal her fangs. “You’re starting to sound like Tay—Blessa. Such arrogance just from literally bypassing the whole mission.”

“We all picked our classes. Some people picked better than others, by virtue of trying to be interesting.”

“Our chatter is going to alert them!” Juvrelor hissed, doing that adorable human shushing motion: one itty-bitty finger raised to his plump lips. “Let’s whisper a plan. Thankfully, there’s no Toddel bullshit that could ruin—”

Blessa raised her claws happily. “Why doesn’t Toddel poke their head out and lure the metal guardians away? They can just burrow back down out of reach if it gets dicey. Then, we all walk on by!”

Mavai’s expression was one of exasperation and disgust: the Resket warrior hated the cowardice and cheap tactics he saw on display, and soon, might rethink his prior persuasion that Blessa the Nutripetrologist was worthy of being a slayer. Was the Krev even actually a Nutripetrologist? He hadn’t seen her do anything related to her speciality. This kind of nonsense wasn’t going to work when they had to slay a firefossil at the end of this all. Toddel couldn’t just lure it into a cage—”

“Why not?” Blessa demanded.

“Yeah. Why not?” the Smigli seconded.

Mavai despaired that these buffoons were interrupting even his internal narration; they weren’t taking this seriously at all. He was very close to disbanding this whole mission, regardless of how critical it was to the land that they eliminate the monster. The Resket could also just forge on alone and leave them to bumble around to their own devices. He was there to hold their paws during their first foray into combat, but they clearly didn’t need him: they had Toddel. Spectacular.

“No, don’t leave us,” Blessa protested. “What’s important is that we make it to the sunsteel, right? We’re just civilians of Kamta village and we’ve been through a lot. If we can think our way out of a few encounters, that is taking it seriously. Like Juvrelor said, we don’t want to risk death if we don’t need to, right?”

The Resket sealed his eyes shut, reassembling the last remains of his patience. He regretted everything. “One last chance. Any more nonsense and I don’t care if today’s adventures were supposed to be longer; I’m at my obor enterprise limit.”

“Do Reskets even have the saying ‘obor enterprise?’” Lenelda demanded.

Mavai gave her a look that could kill. He reluctantly went along with the party’s idea to find a hiding spot, and pointed to an alcove in the wall. Blessa whispered if there were any cardboard boxes to hide in, which struck the Resket as a dumb idea even for her; he might be missing some context, especially since that was NOT a medieval item he’d ever heard of. Lenelda suggested they squeezed behind a stone statue of a Slayer, carved down to the smallest details on his sword hilt.

It was time for Toddel to work their “magic,” if you could call popping up and hiding below the ground any time danger surfaced that. A part of Mavai’s soul and the weight behind his priceless reputation, as a respected servant of the Emperor, had died in these ruins. He watched the ratchety metal beings follow after the Smigli. The statue and dim lighting provided a bonus for stealth, as well as the fact the hostiles had been alerted earlier.

The party still took a cautious approach, waiting and peeking to ensure that Toddel had lured all of the guardians away. One, however, hadn’t followed the burrowing Smigli and continued to prowl the room. They never left the chamber completely unguarded, and the one left behind jogged Mavai’s memory after he succeeded at slight perception. This metal protector was the largest of the bunch, which meant it would be harder to take down and had more power behind its swings as well…

“We need another distraction. Can I roll to seduce the guardian?” Blessa asked, striking a provocative pose.

Mavai nearly choked on his own tongue. “What? No! We’re done for today; this session is being cut short, and everyone will know it’s your fault.”

“We were scheduled to play for another hour. Don’t be a stick in the mud.”

“I don’t care if we were supposed to play way longer. We’ll pick this up next time, when I’m prepared for how to squash your nonsense. I have been a Chronicler for many years, and never had a campaign derailed like this!”

Lenelda…Quana snickered. “Still love your ‘cute primate’ humans, Gress?”

“They are cute and can get away with it, but only in small doses at once. I need to detox.”

“Hate the game, not the player,” Cherise chuckled. “If you’ve never had problems like this, honestly, the Krev must be pretty narrow-minded on uses for the Earthshaker abilities. That’s the only limit in tabletop games.”

“I guess I’m too narrow-minded to account for everything. All of my hard work, just ripped up, circumvented, and disregarded. I wanted to give you all ample opportunities for immersion, and weave a lovely little yarn…”

“Don’t give up, Gress. You’ll be more adaptable and quick on your feet at the end of this. Your planning is admirable.”

“I haven’t planned for all the ways everything can be abused. It seems humans excel at finding those.”

With the metal guardian encounter brought to an early close, the fate of the Crawlers and Firefossils group was still up in the air. Gress would need to evaluate the storytelling strategies that had served him well for years, until humans were brought into the picture. He would have to decide if it was worth it to continue these weekly meetings and tell the rest of the story despite the challenges.

A/N - Krev DND 3 gets taken down shortly into the session, as the group disbands early and swiftly due to Taylor’s strategies and the failure to heed Mavai’s last chance. Toddel once again proves to be the cornerstone of skipping all encounters. Do you think Gress should continue his story? How do you feel about a Krev Chronicler struggling to keep up with the human penchant for loopholes and antics?

As always, thank you for reading and supporting! On a meta note, do let me know if you guys want to see more of this; with the numbers it’s pulling (or not pulling), I’m on the fence about continuing it. I don’t want to release content that doesn’t appeal to the fans, you all are most important to me!

Comments

I enjoyed this series, but it might not have the same wide appeal as the other miniseries since not everyone understands DnD and its mechanics.

😔

Jhon Bustamante

I personally enjoyed this short series, but I will take any slice of life stories in between the high stakes and highly dramatic stuff. I love that shit.

Dookus Maximus

Are you kidding me? The number of veterans I've spoken to that would play D&D in their down time is... Well, it's only anecdotal evidence from a stranger on the internet, but trust that it's significant. Besides, there was a short time when our team actually kind of got along while they were in basic training.

Dookus Maximus

No bonus update tomorrow due to Krev DND’s cancellation. I was not planning to workshop a new series so soon 😕

Space Paladin

@un-pogaz, besides it's as much min-maxing as playing a Paladin-Sorcerer, Paladin-Warlock or Sorcerer-Warlock. Or any other power combo. It's as much min-maxing as because you're an Artificer, you have lore reasons to be able to craft low and mid tier magic items thanks to your knowledge of them through infusions. Which my DM said sure but you got to pass DC20 skill checks for every crafting attempt. Min-maxing and power gaming are only an issue when the player focuses only on those; I focused on making a flying artificer that would be funny in the way it interacts with the world because it wakes up only with knowledge of languages.

Xilacnog

@un-pogaz Not really, the real reasons most DMs don't allow for unrestricted flying it's: 1. Because calculating ranges are a PITA, since you'll end up using a dimension not natively represented by D&D. 2. Flying allows a player to bypass traps, ambushes, plot points and more. 3. It allows for wacky stuff like flying all the way to Auriel in Rhime of the Frostmaiden and ask her what can you do so she stops freezing the lands; or in CoS pursue Strahd on his flying mount until the mount is dead, then regroup with the rest of the party.

Xilacnog

@Xilacnog Maybe, but it's realy specific, at the edge of Min-Maxime, so the global declaration of Elias about flying is still true.

un_pogaz

Oh, I see you ended the series. Okay, it was a good one. Maybe a little hard to follow because of the concept, which is difficult to render, but it was a lot of fun to follow our protagonists on a light, low-stakes adventure. Honestly, stop it here is the perfect lenght for the idea.

un_pogaz

@SP, speaking for myself, I found it hard to remember who was who in the 1st chapter so I didn't enjoy it as much as the other side stories.

Xilacnog

I'd like to see them go through actual DnD, or Omnissiah forbid, Dragonbane.

Xilacnog

I've used this to great effect in both Curse of Strahd and Rhime of the Frostmaiden. I found a Shield Guardian in CoS, made a new control amulet and that added to the fun. When we got to Rhime of the Frostmaiden, I used a bunch of black ice to make a shoulder cannon for the Shield Guardian that reloads from a Bag of Holding. Thank you god-rolled stats.

Xilacnog

You're actually wrong on the flying with medium armor, Tiefling has a variant that allows for flying with medium armor and if you don't want to be a Tiefling, you can make a Reborn based on said Tiefling variant. Add a half-plate, a Cloak of Protection, decent Dex and the Shield spell, you end up with 30+ while flying; both warlock and artificer allow you to use armor while casting.

Xilacnog

I wouldn't say that, lol. My favorite player group is very good at following the scenarios i've prepared. Then again i've known these guys for so long I can't say their antics are ever surprising.

Jonathan Cardoso Mota

It could be that abiding to what it is implied the chronicler wants to happen is just expected and not abiding the plot could be taboo. It doesn’t have to be that deep.

Conure King!

Yes, there is a cardboard box, Snake. Don't bother checking it before lifting it. It definitely isn't a mimic.

Dragon Writer Luc

This feels like it wasn't nearly thought through enough, I think even with the general idea we're being given throughout this story about "humans always finding loopholes" we've not exactly been given any indications before that Consortium species are downright discouraged from thinking outside the box, especially considering stuff like guerilla warfare INHERENTLY requires the ability to think outside the box yet Jaslips and Reskets are none the wiser about that type of mindset(both to commit it and circumvent it). Not to mention the existence of a legal system implies Lawyers which implies out-the-box thinking and loophole finding as nothing too far out for the Consortium. The tabletop system also seems a bit unprepared for something like this despite supposedly being a long-played system in Krev culture.

Lanker

I think it is funny that Krev DnD is probably more structured than actual DnD, given the apparent lack of “Obor Enterprise”.

Adam Myers

P.S. You should TOTALLY be able to trap Fossil Fires. I know of a bunch of stories of players beating or tricking dragons in unique ways in D&D. I have one of my own (got a giant we were fighting alongside to throw me onto the dragon’s back, and drank a potion of giant size. It crashed down from the sudden weight and we pummeled it). You just need to be willing to make the dragon fight its way out of the trap, to make sure it still feels like a powerful foe.

EliasArt2Life

And chapter 1 said that HUMANS needed playtesting?!? It’s the Smigli that are broken. Based on the story, there seems to be no limit to the Smigli Earthshaker’s burrowing abilities. In D&D, DMs are apprehensive enough abut giving player’s on demand FLYING, when that leaves them exposed in the air, and doesn’t allow them to use medium or heavy armor. Burrowing makes you insomuch invulnerable AND invisible. I think Gress has three big issues with how he’s playing: 1) He doesn’t know how to say “no”. He tried, but was always a roll or argument away from relenting. The “can I seduce the golem” should have been met with a “no. Note even with a crit. It’s a programmed automaton.” 2) He needs to pay more attention to what makes the players have fun. Yes, the GM’s fun matters, but right now Gress is having fun when he’s in control, which is making the players bored and frustrated. Cherise seems to be made to circumvent traps and combat, so she doesn’t want to be forced to wait for everybody. Taylor doesn’t want to go head first into obvious traps and combats, doing what the GM wants his character to do, rather than what he wants his character to do. And Quana… honestly, Quana seems to think that Gress is plotting against her, and likes seeing his plans fall apart, but maybe I’m just reading too much into it. Gress needs to find a happy medium where both he AND the players are having fun, rather than just trying to push it to what makes him have fun. Even if that requires a slight perspective change from him and the other players. 3) He sees Taylor’s antics as “obor enterprise”. Not a problem now, but it could become a problem later. Taylor may be having fun with this, but there’s a deeper reason why he’s doing this; it’s a human defense mechanism. Humans evolved in one of the most competitive environments with no real natural weapons or defenses (at least, compared to relatively sized animals). Even our ability to scale trees was evolving away to make ground based locomotion easier. Being clever and finding unique solutions to problems IS our defense mechanism & natural weapon. If Gress tries to force Taylor to play things his way, Taylor will either try to derail things harder, or lose interest in the game. I winder if we’re going to get an out of session chapter next, where Gress talks with Taylor, or will we pick up in the next session after Gress has done some personal research on how to stop human shenanigans, and likely turns to story into a hopeless railroad as a result.

EliasArt2Life

The people behind Crawlers and Firefossils really need to get some human playtesters to see what kind of obor enterprise they can get up to and break the game into tiny pieces.

Shajenko

You think this is bad? This obor enterprise? He's done worse. That seduction attempt! Are you telling me that a krev just happened to try and seduce a golem? No! He orchestrated it! Taylor!

Gumcel

"Blessa whispered if there were any cardboard boxes to hide in" Uh? Just a box. Anyways, when it comes to DnD a dungeon master must always consider the PCs finding ways to circumvent obstacles, and be prepared to improvise in unexpected scenarios. That's part of the fun (at least for me). As for continuing this story... I personally find this enjoyable. I would like to read more, even if it's just a few more chapters. I completely understand from personal experience how discouraging it is to continue something that fails to gain much audience.

DreamEnvoy

I’m not really vibing with a dnd session, which is okay. Keep the chapters short and take a break afterword. Sry I don’t wanna be critical or mean, I’ll still read, it’s not bad or anything. I just don’t see the girls ever playing

Kevo

First rule of running TTRPGs- no plan survives contact with the players. I understand exactly what's going through Gress's head here- he doesn't want the party to skip the cool content he made for them, but can't think of a reason why their plan wouldn't work that isn't a blatant, arbitrary, railroady retcon. But he respects the integrity of his world and his players' agency too much to do that so he just has to let it happen. He did manage to find a good compromise here, though- by letting Toddel draw *some* of the guardians away, he's able to reward the players' ingenuity without totally skipping the encounter, creating a balance where- "Can I roll to seduce the guardian?" Okay look there's only so much one Krev can take.

DDDragoni

I'd love to see a continuation of this story (once it's finished) after the main story is done, where they all play DnD and they get to see human mythology, and methodology of how to mess with it.

Shrimppuff90

I must say for someone who claims they have a background in improv he’s not very good at thinking on his feet. Hopefully he doesn’t go overboard on trying to plan for everything that humans can think of because than oh Gress your not prepared the amount of shenanigans that humans are capable of.

Austin

The Krevs and the other members of the Consorium must be incredibly polite people to follow the scenario prepared by the GM. Thank goodness, mankind is come out to teach them how to really play RPGs, Fuck Yeah!

un_pogaz

Poor Gress. So I'll prepared for the antics and chaos that is the human XD He needs to learn how to adapt to the humans' nack of finding loopholes. I mean we positions and jobs dedicated to finding loopholes, AKA Lawyers :3 I can't help but smile at the idea that while Toddel is playing Whack-a-mole with the sentinals, the other party members are hiding perfectly behind a statue like Tetris pieces. Considering that the sentinels are sexless and likely have no emotion, I'm gonna say they can't be seduced, though if Blessa/Taylor would like to try to seduce what if basically the image of an Ace warrior, then it is Chronicler Gress' job to make them suffer for it. >:) I also wonder what really is going through Gress' mind when Taylor immediately thought of seduction as a potential solution to a situation. Just another example of primates getting into trouble. I think the Krev would find dwarves to be quite adorable; short, stout humanoids who are also primates with the most glorious beards. (Rock and Stone). I'm personally having fun with this story! I do understand if don't continue it due to the low traffic. Here's hoping to better traffic in the future.

REDemon14

I personally want to see a little more of this, even if it comes to only one or two chapters. It’s nice to see these characters just being able to relax and learn how to have fun again.

John Benjamin Cate

I definitely want to see more, this is a much appreciated break from the dire situation in the main story at the moment, and an interesting little look into “Krev culture”, in how the mythos of the game is constructed, as well as how seemingly straightforward and no-nonsense the games tend to go given Gress’s reactions.

TrendyLaws

Poor Gress. He’s a storyteller who doesn’t know how to properly improvise. I hope he’s able to learn.

John Benjamin Cate

lol, Gress really is suffering from the problem of being a bit too regimented in his planning for how encounters should go. Any game played by rolling dice is inherently going to have some level of randomness to how encounters go- the point shouldn't be about the right way to approach the combat, but going with the flow of whatever nonsense the players are doing.

Cheesy Power

Oh Gress, gressy gressy gress XD You're a planner, through and through, aren't you? A plan for everything! You are just NOT ready for needing to improvise!
