The real Painted Lady couldn't help due to the pollution of the lake. So because the lake was polluted it suppressed her spirit. So at the end, after the lake is cleaned, when she thanks Katara, she could also be thanking her for freeing her spirit from said pollution. Nothing confirmed, just my thoughts. Love your reactions!
