I agree, although I don't mean to criticize how anyone watched the show the first time. People see it how they see it, and it's kinda nice that the show is good enough that I think most fans will eventually warm up to most of the characters over time. I certainly had plenty of gripes about certain characters on first watch, and it wasn't until a second rewatch that I softened on them. I missed out on the experience of deeply caring about them the first time through, and I think the story is a richer experience if you do have that empathy the first time around, so I'm glad Milena and Lola aren't going to have that problem.

Spot on, man. I think it's a combination of lack of empathy (as you said), maybe lack of some emotional maturity or life experience, and conditioning that characters in shows should just be awesome all the time. This show takes the time to explore the many (and often unsavoury) emotions humans experience under duress. That's where the beauty lies, but for a lot of viewers they don't want to sit on this, they just want curated awesomeness with nothing emotionally challenging. Edit: spelling.

ya this show more than any I've ever seen REALLY tests people's empathy, and if they lack it this anime will show it. It rewards those who can have empathy for even the enemies or the "bad" characters and understand why they do the things they do. The people who get annoyed or hate characters seem to lack a certain amount of empathy when it comes to understand the situations the characters are in. They call every other soldier cowards and weak when compared to Mikasa who's an unachievable level of amazing in combat as if they would fare any better in that situation.

Lmao your reactions to the endings of each episode is what I live for.

I appreciate how well you empathize with every character including the ones that aren't central characters. You say there's no annoying characters, but I've seen a lot of people get annoyed at one character or another for being too scared (the soldiers) or too distrusting (the military leadership) or too unsure of themselves (our main characters), but these are all natural human emotions that would get amplified a lot in a crisis where people are getting eaten by giant monsters left and right. You two seem like you really, truly get everyone, and I think you're going to have a lot of fun with this. Plus you're going to love so many people that you'll run out of room on your list of baby boys and baby girls.
