Attack on Titan 3x20 Reaction

thank you for your patience, you might have to be a bit more patient because this is still not processed on yt, hopefully it will happen soon, im gonna put a google drive link of the reaction in the comments so that you can download it if you don't want to wait for youtube... the full reaction will be out tomorrow

Attack on Titan 3x20 Reaction

Comments

I'm late to the convo because I just joined your patreon, but the ymir name thing is interesting because I don't think she was actually named Ymir, that's just what the cult calls the girls/women who they take to put on the throne. And when you think back to when they reveal Christa as Historia, and Eren and Mikasa etc are talking to Hange, after they mention Ymir's name, Hange is like "Ymir???" because she's probably thinking about Ilse's notebook! And how the titan that Ilse met outside the wall said "Subjects of Ymir", which Hange didn't understand obviously, since it's something that only someone outside of the wall would know. Which was a clue that Ymir was from outside the walls, but you can't put that all together until this episode, really.

aerifia

these girls and Accent Central. They did an hour-long discussion of this episode.

ilyaRusin

I am sure that was Reiner, Bertolt doesn't use that phrase

PS

the show time is more like 1870 on our world. way before wwII

yousef Dweik

Yeah I’m surprised about the herring part in season 2 that they couldn’t figure out that it was a sea fish but you’ll have to write this comment on the next part so they see because they probably don’t read comments on this part now.

Melkor

It was cut from the show, but Kenny's grandpa did explain that there are people of different races, living on the island. There were the Orientals, everyone else, and supposedly the nobles. It was noted that the nobles would only marry among noble family, and they also were said to be immune to the founding titan's control. This was the first mention, that the founding titan affects only a specific race of people. All such interesting and crazy stuff, man there are so many clues that lead up to this moment, dotted throughout the series. The can of tuna was "herring" which was a fish from the sea, for instance.

EspiOwnage

@MGU - I agree. I only meant this episode.

ODIS

The voice acting is much better on the subs

MGU

I find that the dub actually gives better context and includes a bit more information. Subs are restricted by the amount of words that can physically fit on the screen in a given amount of time. We can hear many more spoken words in the same amount of time/space it takes to show a subtitle. I often prefer the phrasing of the sub, but the dub usually provides fuller context/understanding for me. They work together :)

Sarah

Milena is so funny

Alex Mills

Man, I love this episode, feel like I discover something new everytime

Ganjaman

Please please watch this episode again and make sure you understand the info that was dumped. It's very important you know everything said in this episode going forward, otherwise you'll be confused and make up theories that don't make sense.

rayman

Well, It's supplementary. It can only add to their understanding.

ODIS

Understand it worse you mean? So many skipped sentence in english

G G

only i have to say about the book's drawings of Grisha's father is.... Do you remember the CREEPPY ending theme of Season 2?

Anthony Gonzales

Btw, you can also watch this episode with English dubbing if that helps you understand better :)

ODIS

i wanna know what u r referring to ... can u share in code somehow.. lol

PM

I just realized that most of LM's patrons are AoT fans haha I love AoT too but I came here for their Avatar and Breaking Bad reactions.

Jyn Jilly

It would be really interesting if we hear from Milena how the show talks about the story with Serbian subtitles. I wonder if it would be any different than what the English subs told us, or if these two would gain clarity on small details they might have missed in this INFORMATION-packed episode. Amazing reaction ladies, this makes my patreon subscription completely worth it.

Strelnikov

The Writing level of Aot is Legendary 😌

Cobo

So True 🤣🤣🤣😭😭

Cobo

Like any amazing Attack on Titan episode, it answers so much yet leaves more questions in its wake. You two are in for a treat come S4.

Strelnikov

In short, we live in a society

Nick

I love how you guys get "mind blown" by all the facts spilling out this episode. This show never cease to shock or amaze you, that's why it's one of the greatest. And BTW if you look back at that episode you can see the santa titan who ate Eren in season 1 episode 5 when they threw them down from the wall. Just gonna borrow this comment from a forum I saw: "That scene close to the end when Seargent Gross is speaking to Grisha is more important than you know. Isayama confirmed in an interview that this scene was supposed to break the fourth wall in a sense. In the moment, the viewer is disgusted by Gross and his twisted worldview. But when he looks at the camera and says this, he's talking directly to us. We're the ones sitting here and watching people get eaten by monsters for entertainment. It's Isayama's meta commentary on the morbid fascination we feel towards violence, even if it is in a fictional context."

Cation

I think it's genius writing because it brings into focus the discussion of our innate blood-lust as humans -it is not that it's on the nose or meta commentary breaking the 4th wall as a gimmick, it is just highlighting our universal condition as humans. Stories that truly resonate with us, like Attack on Titan, always find a way to echo a certain reality of the human experience. Like Erwin said to Pixis, conflict will only end when there is only one human being left standing. Many shows and movies touch on that, to be sure, and this is the way this anime shows us. Even if officer Gross (too on the nose? like the armabands? nah) deserved his fate, and even if he is just a cartoon character, cheering for the fate he deserved proves that we all have the innate need for justice and survival, and the survival of our own people, and we will achieve it even through violent means. That the morality of it all is relevant, in this case that Gross is a heartless murderer that deserved it so Grisha could live, proves that cruelty is sometimes necessary to achieve justice., and we do indeed want to see justice, so in the real world hardly any sensible person would object to someone like Gross getting what is coming to him.

David Caine

I don't agree with your point on S4 being less jarring if they go into it after the OVAs, if anything it'd be more jarring because the art style for those OVAs resembles S1-S2 rather than S3. Also I can't remember which reaction it was, 3x18 or 3x19 but Lola said she heard the animation/art for S4 was a lot different due to COVID and time restraints, so I don't think anything they see will be unexpected to them, they also may or may not have the blu-ray version of S4 so that'll be slightly better. With that said though, I'm happy with whatever they decide to do and will be watching along with everyone, it was just a suggestion. The fact they didn't reply to my question probably means that they plan on watching them lol

ML9

I wanted them to discuss that Dina is the smilling titan :p

Ammar gayal

You were right about that LOL. Smart edit, Lola

Isaac

I mean, it is clever writing, I just think "genius" is pushing it. Perhaps I don't care for 4th wall breaks as a tool, but...the innocence of the Eldian Restorationists is debatable sure, but that official still essentially admitted to enjoying murdering innocent people (like many of his victims presumably were). Like Fay. There's certainly a level of brutality to enjoying the sight of a vicious murderer facing the same fate he happily inflicted on others, but is that really the same morally as what that murderer was doing?

Jacob

I always find it so crazy to think where the show started and where it is now after they have reached the basement - and how everything actually makes sense. Truly amazing writing

MGU

The point might be valid philosophically, but ultimately this is a story. Cheering that official's death doesn't prove any point, because it's not real. We want this fictional person we don't like to suffer for his fictional crimes. Nobody is cheering for flesh and blood people to be hurt. If Grisha cheered and taunted him, then sure, that would drive the point home.

Jacob

What I like about various story reveals we’ve had until now is that in retrospect they only make the rest of the story make more sense. It’s not like a shocking twist that comes out of nowhere, like ‘oh the titans are aliens!’ That would be a surprise but it wouldn’t make much sense in the rest of the story. I’m glad AOT doesn’t just want the surprise, the story gets re-contextualized but it is still consistent.

Patrick

Please react to lost girls OVA it’s a great way to chill before things get intense and if you hold of on doing it there is basically no point to watching it after part 1 of season 4 and you probably won’t then.

Melkor

Very true at this point a poll would 100% end with starting s4 immediately no matter what. Completely agree with all you said tom.

Melkor

I think it gives of way more ww1 vibes in many ways.

Melkor

The biggest thing I couldn't believe was how important the basement ended up being. It got built up so much that I thought there was no way they could make it live up to 3 full seasons of suspense. In the end, it was so momentous it changed the entire genre of the show from Humans vs Titans to Humans vs Humans.

Camzeee

Their technology is more in line with world War 1 than 2. Some things seem to be ww2 era some stuff seems even a few decades older. Still more advanced than what out guys have.

Rick Turpentine

Oh another parallel I wanted to note! Remember back in S1, the disdain Eren was given for being a titan? Like he was in the prison cell and the guards scowled at him. He was called a monster, told he should be killed because of how dangerous he is... The irony that all of humanity inside the walls is actually like that, and people outside the walls think of them in that same way You'll find that it's not just that this episode makes sense plot-wise and mystery-wise, but the implications of it make all the themes and ideas come full circle

tom

Dina eating her husband's new wife is such a dark, twisted comedic punchline. It's so sick when you think about it, and the context of how cruel all the people involved in the situation have been treated sucks all of the humour out of the premise. It's just... fucked up

tom

The anime sorta rushed this scene and cut a lot of dialogue but yeah the point still stands

tom

Also notice how his opinion about how bad those things are changes to best fit his narrative. In the beginning, when they assumed the history was right, he said "Our ancestors had done the right thing". Then, when he finds there's a chance the history was false, he says "I knew it, because our ancestors could not be so terrible!".

tom

The thing is, I feel like in between S3 and S4 is the best time for a break. Take some time, view the side stories that flesh out the characters, and then when you go back into S4 with a fresh perspective it will feel less jarring (Because it starts very differently) If they do a poll people will obviously choose to start S4 earlier because the average person can't wait, and then there'll never get around to those stories (Not much point doing it after S4 at all, it's already a little diminished since they did S3, but it'll be even less reason to revisit them if it's after S4). Either way, if they choose not to watch them, I just hope they start S4 in a new session, and have the last episode of S3 be at the end of a session. Giving themselves some time will be beneficial imo, and that's why I think Lost Girls could be good to chill out to, especially when the last episode of S3 gives you a lot to chew on and jumping right into S4 would undermine that

tom

And Ymir's titan originally belonged to Marcel (Said in S2E10)

tom

It all makes sense: Ymir's past and the marleyan police discovering that she was pretending to be the actual founder Ymir, the warriors ideology and Reiner's suffering, the walls and the titans inside them, the pure titans and who they really are and where they come from, the evil race and why the royal family decided to wipe their memories. Also, it's so good to see that Dina actually found Grisha (his house) again even after becoming a titan and this led to her eating his second wife. What if he was home when it all happened?Everything is just perfect and the foreshadowing is out of this world. Best episode I've ever seen

Mauro

Did you notice all the Titans you saw in the episode many of them were in season 1 episode 5 like the titan that ate Eren and quite a few others that were in season 1 in the first 5 episodes.

Melkor

Attack on titan feels like the 'usual' student experience. You go through an entire semester not studying and you get to the finals just to pull a couple of all nighters(ep 20):D

mapo picker

Notice, when asked if he enjoys watching people getting eaten by titans, the guy who killed Grishas Sister looks towards the camera. He does so, because he talks to the audience. He says people actually want to see cruelty, and you are proving his point a couple of scenes later, by cheering for his death and want him to get eaten slowly. This is actually my favorite scene of this episode, because most reactors, and people in general, dismiss his claim that violence is interesting not realizing that he is actually, from a philosophical standpoint, right. And you can actually watch his point being proven in your own reaction. This is once again, genuis writing

Franz

no, we know season 4 is the last one, we were saying that cause we couldn't believe it ends so soon cause it seems to us that the story they jist introduced could last for a couple of seasons

LM Reactions

Good because I tend to accidentally spoil things sometimes.

Melkor

it's not a spoiler, you just summerized everything about smart titans. no new information was shared.

szepi79

I personally would want to see them react to the lost girls Annie arc.

Melkor

"some" :D "implied" :D

szepi79

@lasagnaman It's not a spoiler

해훈 이

AoT writers: "so... you wanted answers... okay, in these 4 episodes you will get so much information that your head is going to explode"

szepi79

We may be using different criteria here. Story wise episode 20 did it for me because of how complex and deep it made the show. Of course "warrior" was insane because of the twist and the drama that came with it but we didn't really get anything more to the story except more questions, which is more than fine. With 16,17,18 we basically had an extremely intense emotional climax, some of the best cinema in existence but still the story wasn't the center of it. Only after episode 20 did we have everything. The most rich, complex and deep story. At least for me it is.

LaZa

I might just desagree a bit with you . Ep 6 from season 2 established it as one of the best stories. The trio (16,17&18) in season three made it a masterpiece and episode 20 just solidified it as the absolute best. I know there are sooo many wonderful episodes in AOT but those are my favorite (i wont mention S4 fav ep to avoid spoiling them 😄)

Be Happy

This was the episode that established AOT as one if not the best story I've ever witnessed.

LaZa

stop spoiling and let them explore on their own....

lasagnaman

I’m glad you guys took note how Grisha said he couldn’t read most of the ancient text. He simply had faith Ymir wouldn’t do such awful things. So even he only had his own biased opinion about their history - just like Marley had theirs.

Zoe Frew

@Lola&Milena, I'm not sure where you guys are at in the story now, but wondering how you're feeling about watching the 3 lost girls OVAs after S3 at this point? If you're on the fence, maybe do another poll? I don't mean to speak for everyone but a lot probably wouldn't mind if you wanted to skip them for now and jump into S4, unless you actually want to watch them then do that ofc.

ML9

u guys are not piecing together a very important thing they revealed in this epi lol gonna be funny when you realize it

assCrackBandit

Eren’s dad had a titan but he also ate Historias half sister who had the founding titan so Eren has the founding titan and another one you haven’t gotten the name of yet so Eren has 2 Titans. Eren: Founding and a random titan. Reiner: armored titan Annie: female titan Bertholdt now Armin has Colossal titan. Zeke: beast titan In season 3 part 2 they mentioned a titan standing on all 4 legs beside the beast Titan Rolling Stones to him Erwin though that also was a smart titan. Ymir in season 2 had a titan that earlier belonged to one of reiner’s friends can’t say anything more than that but you saw her transform. Any other Titans are unknown to you. If this is a bloody spoiler which I’m pretty sure it isn’t than just ask me to delete it. Just wanted to put out all the Titans they 100% know are smart Titans.

Melkor

I love this, you two are definitely top tier reactors for AoT <3 <3 <3

lasagnaman

Must've misinterrpeted then but they seemed to be saying with the imminent threat of the titans in the walls that the show could only last for 4 seasons and can't go on for long

tom

I'm so happy you have answers now. I think everything you learned in this episode, you had correctly guessed at some point since the beginning, whether it was something you methodically figured out or a wild guess you threw out. You were just missing the way it all connected together. The way all the pieces fit together and makes sense is one of the most gratifying things about this show.

jveezy

LOL THAT INTERMISSION SCENE WAS HILARIOUS

reina

26:29 A Titan that looks like Eren's

해훈 이

22:33 There are titans who ate Thomas, Eren in Season 1 Episode 5 and The titan who got punched in face by Eren's titan right after transformation. S1 Ep9 25:14 25:54 The titan who ate Mina in Season 1 Episode 5. 23:20 23:51 Grisha's first wife ate second.

해훈 이

The moment Eren woke up from this episode and the dialogue between him and Mikasa are purely not coincidental when you rewatch the very first scene of the show. Isayama is really a genius. I can't even capture the beauty of this scene at its fullest potential after finishing the manga.

Dung Nguyen

They know S4 is the last season, they've mentioned it in previous reactions

ML9

Greetings from New Zealand! I love that you 2 have picked up on one of Isayama's (the author) main points in this story. Doesn't matter whose side you're on, there's good and bad. Things aren't black and white...it's all just shades of grey (remember that for the season 4 intro song). Great breakdown once again, I enjoy how you guys analyze things 😁👍

Ryan Peters

AOT's first chapter title is "To You, 2000 Years From Now"

해훈 이

09:01 In AOT, the sun rises from the west and sets to the east. If you look at the map, you can see that it is the real world's top-to-bottom left-to-right reversal. The paradis island is Madagascar in the real world, and the nearby continent is Africa. 20:21 Young Zeke is holding a beast.

해훈 이

So, when Bertolt refers to Eldians as an "evil race" he's talking about the race that he himself belongs to, and whose alleged sins he and the other Warriors have been told they have to atone for. That seems obvious, but the psychological weight of that kind of self-hatred is going to be addressed more directly next season.

Jacob

I noticed that too, wondered why it was

tom

No doubt. Shoutout to Rot 13 btw

Isaac

Surprised yall didn't know that S4 is the last season, its official name is actually Shingeki no Kyojin: Final Season, and not S4. The full episode count should be in the late 20s or early 30s

tom

Audio muted 25:00-25:10 when Lola is clearly heated and speaks, I imagine she didn't have many nice things to say about him lmao

ML9

(Hidden S4 comment below, put into Rot 13 algorithm to decode) Guvf jvyy or fhpu na vzcbegnag bofreingvba sbe Tnov arkg frnfba

tom

Yeah, just like how in Episode 4 of S1 Reiner says to Annie "You're not made to be a warrior" but they translated it as soldier back then

tom

It's fine to call it paradise, because it's an english translation of japanese people saying a french word. you can pronounce it "para-dii" like they do or say paradise so the double meaning works

tom

Yes, in Ymir's backstory we see the man say "A new life needs a new name", and she says "From that day on I was called Ymir"

tom

"I don't think ethnic cleansing should happen" "Honestly, kill them all" The duality of man...

tom

Hahahaha love how one second Lola was like, "Oh these are good people; these are our people!!" (about the patriots) then literally ten seconds later: "Well wait what, wait what... I don't think ethnic cleansing..." Welllllllllllcome to the actual heart and soul of AoT, where you will continue to feel every bit as confused and disoriented as you did before 😅

Sarah

Haha after all this while I realised you’ll are speaking Serbian in between 🤣

Sid Zacheriah

Yes, "Ymir no Tami" is the same phrase they use, hereafter translated as "Subject of Ymir." The concept was so outside our understanding of the show when Ilse's Notebook came out that fan translations just went with what kind of made sense lol I don't think I've ever seen an official subtitle set for Ilse's Notebook actually, it's always the same fan translation that has Levi called "corporal" etc.

JupiterCobalt

I've been itching to say for ages that the person who made the walls was not the female goddess depicted in the S2 ED, it was a king (male), as Historia's dad explains in S3. even though it was given to you I didn't want to spoil but hopefully you understand now Sidenote, you should definitely watch the Season 2 ED now. S2 came out while the content from this episode was recently published in the manga source material, so it was a trip for manga readers. If you watch the ED you can basically extrapolate how the world came to be the way it was

tom

From Ilse's Notebook: "Ymir's people". I think it actually said "Subjects of Ymir"/"A subject of Ymir" (Japanese doesn't distinguish between singular and plural), but it wasn't translated that way until this episode

tom

And Lola reading it aloud when they go back is like a parent reading a bedtime story haha

tom

just say it ... it's the best anime ever. It's a masterpiece

Emiilio Astudiillo

I think it's important to realize that what the Sargeant Gross (the guy that killed Grisha's sister) is saying is what we as the fans and Eren wanted for most of the series: The death of all the Titans in the world and to save humanity. It just didn't occur to us that our guys were the Titans

ashraven

Season 4 can’t come sooner! Ahhhhhh

Harfie

the continent is called paradis not paradise

BOBBY

I was also most shocked by the reveal of Dina eating Carla back in episode 1 lol

bondbond53

Maybe one of my favorite reactions I’ve seen for this episode. You guys are so perceptive! Even if it was a load of information haha

Lana

Definitely the longest 20 minutes in TV!

Bryan Givens

May I introduce you to the other walls LOL If you are still confuse about the 3 walls I leave you this map: https://imgur.com/a/JFB90

Dan Mena

Um.. why is Lola a better reader than me and I'm a native English speaker? lol

Jyn Jilly

"Please explain in serbian" She's so cute

Ran Nain

Hey girls, I was wondering, in order to avoid the stress and headaches in the future when these things invariably happen, why not just advance your schedule by 1 day for yourselves? Edit and privately upload Friday's reaction on Thursday, kind of thing. You'd have to take a day and work extra hard to be ahead of schedule (or take a Sunday to edit and upload Monday's reaction). But moving forward, the amount of daily work should remain the same. And then when the day of release comes, you just make it public. Just a thought. Although, if you're anything like me and like to procrastinate, I understand how that kind of schedule can be hard to maintain lol :P

ODIS

looks like i wasn’t the only one checking their page every 5 minutes 😂

Jacob Schreiber

There are definately some implied parallels between Marley and Nazi Germany

I remember how confused I was when I first watched this episode lmao
