I dont think anyone has mentioned it yet but this episode cuts out a really big info drop from the manga about the Ackermanns. Can't wait for 4x03, I loved the opening showcases of Marley's Titans (finally!), and my jaw dropped at the crazy revelations of Reiner's backstory. They really ramped the emotion up gradually from 4x01 to 4x02 to 4x03.

What? What makes you think marleyans invented dumb titans? From the description of eldian history we know titans were around eating people, there’s also plenty of art in the show that depicts eldian history where pure titans are attacking the cities of other people. Marleyans have nothing to do with the injection technology. We know this for absolute fact because the reiss family has injections on paradise, and they arrived on paradise before Marley was in control. Obviously the shot doesn’t come from Marley, meaning it either comes from before eldia before marleyans won the war or it means the reiss knew how to make the needles, either way that indicates Marley has nothing to do with discovering how to make someone who isn’t one of the nine into titans

What do you even mean by how does it make sense? It's doesn't have to make sense. They feel like they were treated poorly in the past so they decided to treat eldians poorly in the present. Does that make sense? Maybe yes maybe no but the whole point is that the cycle of hatred will only continue forever if one side doesn't choose to forgive the other side. Humans don't always operate based on what makes sense, they are flawed and often operate on emotion rather than logic.

Hmm. I don't know about that. Why would they need to control the Eldians, and if they did, why would they need to be cruel about it? It's only because of Marleyan science that anyone who isn't one of the nine can become a titan. Even if Eldian rebel did get some serum, mindless titans aren't even close to a match for the shifters, most of which Marley still has (and they had more before the Warriors invaded Paradis). Also, using them is very different from controlling them. If everything the government of Marley says is true, how does "When the Eldians ruled the whole world, titans roamed and killed people of all nations. so we should send them to roam and kill people of all other nations. Eldians took advantage of their titan powers to conquer and destroy, therefore we should take advantage of their titan powers to conquer and destroy" make sense?

We don't know to what extent eldians crimes are but there are several clues that tell us they are real to some degree. For one, Hange reveals in season 3 that the entire world hates eldians because they fear the return of the eldian empire. If evey nation on earth is scared of the eldian empire, it seems unlikely its some fabricated hoax. Also consider what king fritz said

Yeah I'm with you, Reiner was convincing himself all along that they are devils, but all that he could come up with are the stuff he said at the dinner table. Gabi was confused and replied "aren't they bad people?". He knows they are good people, but the disorder and the brainwashing are messing him up.

I think the dinner scene with Reiner might be misinterpreted by many. Remember Reiner has Dissociative Identity Disorder. So my interpretation of the scene is that he's stating things that he convinced himself makes the Paradis people bad. Because in reality the scouts weren't bad people but he has to hold on to every small thing they ever did to justify his mission. And he knows they aren't evil which is why he developed a split personality in order to deal with that conflict within himself. Again, that's just my interpretation but I also don't think he was lying or being sarcastic in that scene.

I hope the girls can see this comment. There is a scene from manga that should belong to this episode but wasn't included, and I think it is the most important scene for understanding Gabi. She told Reiner that she wants to inherit his titan because she knows he is suffering. She is his blood relative, there's a high chance she will also inherit his memories, so she needed to get the armor titan so Reiner's memories can live on, and "even those things you find too painful to tell other people... The two of us could figure them out together." She wasn't only doing this for honor, she's also doing this because she cared deeply for Reiner and it is her way of keeping him alive.

Just two episodes into s4 and you guys have some of the most sympathetic and sophisticated views on Reiner and Gabby's psychological states. They are highlights of this part of season 4 for me and are a big reason why this show has continued to evolve, from action-packed survival fantasy to clandestine mystery to complex treatise on social injustice and war.

I don't think there's a reason to think that Reiner's mom has the same views as Reiner. After all, she was born into the same reality as Gabi, and brainwashed just like Gabi is. She has never interacted with Paradis Eldians, and has no other opinion except the one she was fed since a young age. I think she closed the windows because Reiner was speaking heresy in her opinion.

One thing that should probably be pointed out is the development of technologies in the rest of the world. The Paradis Island has very limited research and development in technology ever since the Great Titan War and has a 100 years disparities in terms of Science and Technology. 100 years of technical gap might not sound as bad as you first thought, but Paradis Island does not have photograph, not even vehicle. The transportation within the walls are still horses. While the rest of the world has navy forces and air-forces. (The Great Titan War took place at time when technologies are not advanced). A minor correction from the discussion is that the rest of the world aside Marley, fears Eldians not because, or not just because Eldians are used in wars. But, most essentially, they suffered from the damages caused by Titans before the Great Titan War as well as Marley.

It's truly brilliant how the scene with reiner and his family is impactful. Him talking about eldians on paradise with the same monotone and degrading tone that marley brainwashed into them but all that while actually refering to casual and definitely not "demon-like" actions like "someone ate a potato during service" and stuffs. Like you can really feel how f*cked up he is and how his split personnality is showing/killing him more and more. And how reality is far from what they are forced into believing. Amazingly done

Eldians took advantage of their titan powers to conquer and destroy. So if you were looking at it thru Marleyan shoes, they truly have no choice but to use/control Eldians. Although it being incredibly cruel to Eldians, you gotta think about it overall. This is why this show is truly amazing. Just when you think you have a solid antagonist(s) of the story, you gotta think about why they do what they do.
