I worship these two Goddessess

Ahh, that's an interesting point. I think Howard's feelings do have some effect on Jimmy's reaction. How much is the question?

Dante

I'm saying Jimmy doesn't blame Howard. I think his reaction was triggered by learning about the insurance and would be the same whether or not Howard said he blames himself.

Hitopopamus

That's the same thing. Letting Howard take the blame is easier than facing his own guilt.

Dante

Stop hinting at shit

T0ast

A lot of people seem to think that the reason Jimmy reacted as he did is because it was easy to let Howard take the blame, but I agree with your take. I think he realized it was on him and this is his way of coping with it.

Hitopopamus

I agree with everything except for the part where his breakdown was down to the realization he hurt Jimmy. Chuck shows no remorse at all towards Jimmy. He's just so in his own head at that point and fighting mental illness that Jimmy became secondary.

Season 5 is perfection with that character

Ok can't wait for a character at the end of this season

I don't think Chuck said what he said, "The truth is... you've never mattered all that much to me," to hurt Jimmy specifically or primarily. Chuck cared too much, as rewatching the show you catch that for Chuck it was always about Jimmy, whether jealousy or resentment, or being disturbed by Jimmy's facility with life or embarrassed by Jimmy's actions. Chuck wanted Jimmy to move on finally as well, and to not worry anymore so they don't hurt each other anymore. Chuck caused his own neurosis and mental decline, or at the very least he did not help his mental illness at all, his own intelligence and obsessions exacerbated it. Chuck said "The truth is... you've never mattered all that much to me" because he wanted to believe it himself and unload his own mental burden and obsession with Jimmy. A part of Chuck wanted to get better that way. Then he has his complete breakdown because he realizes that what he said hurt Jimmy, that it was ungrateful and dismissive after everything Jimmy had done for Chuck. It's a contradiction within Chuck, one he would never admit. Chuck wanted to "correct" Jimmy, to teach him the "right" way, because of his own ego and perfectionism. But this struggle within out of resentment vs just loving his brother is what killed Chuck, and has driven Jimmy to his Walter White moment of callousness. A book about psychological baggage can be written about the whole thing.

David Caine

Looking back on Chuck, he was very ungrateful towards the people who took care of him. Howard for keeping his integrity at the firm and protecting his reputation. Jimmy for all the support he offered in bringing him food and catering to his needs. That is the one thing that makes me rather unsympathetic towards Chuck's fate. He was entitled and didn't treat the people who loved him well. The saying is would you rather be right or kind and Chuck always chose to be right.

Camzeee

Heartbreaking episode, the death of Chuck and the death of Jimmy, in my opinion.

Kase West

one of the best scenes in the whole show IMO

Taya

I like how Chuck's death is so heavy and sad that they have to use Mike, of all people, as comic relief lmao

Suhhh Dude

I’m REALLY anticipating how the ladies will react to the next episode, specifically the Kim/Howard scene.

Julian San

"well howard, that is your cross to bear... " It was harsh but not harsher than what Chuck said, "You really never mattered that much to me" to his own brother who pretty much took care of him through his mental issues...SMH no words indeed. Jimmy has every right to feel resentful towards Howard, who wasn't exactly a saint to Jimmy in the beginning. He also helped Chuck go after Jimmy's law license in court.

Joe Lazarus

Someone else pointed this out one time, and though I did not view it this way when watching initially, thought it was interesting. Perhaps Jimmy in that end scene is actually taking Chuck’s last advice to him. He’s stopping the show of guilt and emotions, and just embracing that he will hurt the people around him and who he is. Chuck said he would respect him more if he did it this way. I’m sure this isn’t what he had in mind, but it does technically align with what Chuck told him.

ATG

I’ve always felt that the final scene was two things: 1, Jimmy felt initial guilt upon learning about the insurance but the moment Howard took the blame, his conscience became clear which leads to 2, why should Jimmy care anymore since the last conversation with Chuck was Chuck saying that he never cared about Jimmy (whether truthful or not). And furthermore, Jimmy should stop trying to change who he is. Howard ended up being the catalyst for catharsis.

Julian San

Jimmy's actions in the last scene were a coping mechanism but still such a messed up thing to do to Howard.

AndreasZ

It's easier for Jimmy to let Howard take the blame than own up to his own mistakes. Notice how quickly he becomes his old self again after saying that to Howard. It was like he took the weight from his own shoulders and threw it on top of Howard and now Jimmy feels better.

Dante

Jimmy was so cold in that scene, I didn't really even expect it. Also I sent you guys a message.
