He is just a kid, had to kill a person and as Lola said: the worst is that the woman hesitated and probably was not all into killing too. BUT about he saying they were criminals and could be the bad guys now, we have to remember that Hange and Levi was torturing a man in the room next to them, and they could hear him screaming. The scouts are trying to protect Eren and Historia and doing what they think is the best to humanity. But their enimies were as much invested in taking Eren and Historia from them and stop them, because it's what these people think is the best to humanity too. Our guys don't know what their reasons are, and what they are fighting for. It is reinforced by what Sannes said to Hange: according to him all they did was to protect peace and humanity never had a war inside the walls thanks to them. So what they are fighting for to think the terrible things they did was justified? Armin was questioning: We are killing and torturing now but how do we know we are doing the right thing? How do we know we chose the right side? What if we are wrong? I think that is what he meant. Sorry for writing a book LOL
