Kind of like Iroh and Zuko in a way... a father who lost his son takes the boy under his wing. Also, you say in your discussion that Mike is not a good guy. And that's fair. But in this case, technically all he said was "I know it was you." The other two cops actually took the initiative to kill him. After that, technically all Mike did was defend himself. Sure, he played on their personalities, but he wasn't the one to become violent first.
