I wonder. If you are a slave to your own destiny, then can you actually avoid it? Seems like a straight up contradiction. As you said, Aang "tried to" run away from it, but life seems to find a way to put you back on track. The ego/personality believes it has some sense of agency, but it could all just be an illusion (especially in Avatar's case). I agree that it seems to be like a "slave to a predestined life", but maybe on some level Aang's soul also has some say in this process, prior to his birth/incarnation (not a fact of the show, but based on some beliefs of eastern spiritual systems).

well the thing is that the Avatar is still human. You can see from Aang and Korra that they both have times where they don't want to be the Avatar. Aang ran away from his destiny (or tried to) in the beginning only to be forced back. If anything, the existence of the Avatar is a curse for the Avatar themselves. They are placed with this burden of the whole world because they posses the ability to bend all 4 elements. You can even say they are a slave to destiny. It would interesting honestly to see an Avatar that does not follow this path. One that choose to live their own life as they wish instead of babysitting the whole world.

Concerning Lola's thoughts regarding Avatars and "not knowing what kind of Avatar you're gonna get".... It's not possible for the Avatar to be evil. As Milena said, because it's always Raava, the spirit of light who combines with the newborn to become the new Avatar. So, keeping the world in balance becomes that newborn's destiny as soon as they're born. The Avatar is above politics. The Avatar is a physical manifestation of a "natural phenomenon." Therefore, just as you can't vote whether there will be a hurricane tomorrow, you equally can't vote what the Avatar will do.
