Rod was a very isolated person, he basically went mad with his family becoming possessed by their ancestors and had no one left. I think it's up to your interpretation whether he gave up on stopping the titans and instead worshipped the idea of being a god, or if he genuinely wanted Historia to wipe out the titans and save humanity (he definitely manipulated her but he never lied to her either). random fact, the next episode (3x10) is the author of the series' favourite chapter out of the 139 chapters in existence
