2021-09-11 02:14:10 +0000 UTCDuring training Shadis (the instructor) said that Bertholdt was extremely talented but lacked initiative, as seen this episode with Reiner telling him to finally step up by himself instead of relying on him. And now we see what Bertholdt is capable of once he has the initiative and determination to take action, he outsmarted Armin and completely saw through his plan and then kicked Mikasa out of the way when she tried to sneak attack him. As Bertholdt said he doesn't want to put anyone else through this never ending hell that they're stuck in and remembering Marco and the way it also made Annie and Reiner suffer just spurs him on more to do his mission. He's fully aware that the people he's fighting aren't devils and openly acknowledges them as his friends but he won't let his feelings falter him like last time, he wants to put an end to this as quickly as possible and kill his friends in probably the most respectful and peaceful way possible, if such a thing even exists lmao. This episode is such a great character focus for Bertholdt since up until this point he's only been seen as the background guy and Reiner's lackey yet when he finally finds his initiative he's probably the most competent and skilled warrior of the 3 of them, he's got the wit to outsmart Armin and the combat skill to fight an Ackerman. He's such a great character!

But the most interesting to me is Jean, just by his weird smile and expression, also the way he was talking... He was happy for a victory, but also conflicted for killing a friend. But someone needed to put some sense on Conny and Sasha hahaha
