It's always a joy watching you girls react to this masterclass of a show. It's also amazing how many plot points you've nailed down. Good on you.

AlexBoss

Hehe, well I only mention it since they said they like BSG :)

XanderWhat

Love that there’s ALWAYS an obligatory “that Martian is a Cylon” comment that goes with this episode.

IO : Jupiter Moon AO: "Area Of Operation" Military Jargon

Still think it wasn't mostly about money for Mao who is already filthy rich. Maybe in the beginning it was but towards the end there when he stamped out his last little bit of conscious it was something else. I believe FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) took over at that point! He was the closest to the Protomolecule and now was learning first what it was doing as well as being the first to be in control of it. Already being rich/powerful, he was not about to let someone else eventually beat him to what he already had. Notice his reaction to the whole, "the boy is talking to the protomolecule!" How hard he was pushing to find out what the work was. This was not a $$$ thing, this was a, "We're on the verge of an extreme info breakthrough and I am the one that is holding those cards; I'm NOT about to give that up because of the suffering of some random kids!" $$$ of course could be had from such cards that he now had but I believe it wasn't the driving force behind his actions once he moved beyond his initial "stop the project".

I can see why people would say that, but I disagree in the sense that I don't think the owner of any private research corporation is driven more by curiosity than greed. They can pretend their greed is out of curiosity and in the name of science, but really they just want to be "First. Fastest. Furthest." (Protogen's slogan) over everyone else pretending to do the same. If the real goal is to learn as much as possible as fast as possible, then this research would be shared. Instead Mao hid what Protogen learned on Phoebe and then used it to secretly experiment on Belters and turn immunocompromised children into weapons he tried to sell to the highest bidder. I can believe the curiosity-without-empathy motivation when it comes to the scientists themselves, but not for the guy who stands to make the most money from their research.

I don’t think Mao is driven by greed. It’s scientific curiosity and fear of the unknown.

When you're done watching every episode of this show, I hope you come back and watch the last 10 minutes of this video. I think you'll enjoy seeing what you got right and wrong :) Also Lola, you're absolutely right that you've heard "the work" before. I think the last person to say it was Julie Mao when she was talking to Miller. Great catch. The discussion about honor and motivation and standing up to power and what actions are justified is one thing I love about this show. If only Souther or his loyalists had less honor and were more like Miller, they could've just shot Nguyen and ended this quickly. Even after Nguyen shot Souther, it took him firing on the Jimenez for them to decide that stopping Nguyen was worth whatever dishonor comes from breaking the military chain of command. For someone like Nguyen, attacking Mars is worth any amount of dishonor because he's so driven by hate. He's the kind of person who survives a war and comes out racist til the day they die. Other people have different reasons for going to extremes. Errenwright is willing to do anything as long as it protects Earth. I think his actions come more from distrust and fear than hate. Mao is willing to do anything as long as it makes money. He's only willing to sacrifice kids when he knows that doing so will help put Protogen in a position to profit off the protomolecule. Crazy scientists like Strickland and Cortazar are willing to do anything to feed their curiosity. Less extreme, but for a while Holden was willing to risk the lives of his crew to go eradicate the protomolecule, Naomi was willing to go against her crew to protect the Belt, Alex was willing to give up family life if it meant he could fly, and Amos is willing to kill anything and everything to protect his crew. To quote a character from another show, "Everyone had to be drunk on something to keep pushing on, everyone is a slave to something."

Io is one of Jupiter's moons. AO is a military term for area of operations. They could have made it easier lol

*High Pitched Voice* OMFG!!!!!! Soooooo excited to watch this!!! And yes, Nguyen is absolutely rage inducing, so well played. Then this extreme up and down of the mutiny, world-class... never had a show/movie run the full gamut of excitement and rage in such a short span. I also cannot wait anymore for the reaction of S3E6 after this reaction.... so sure my speakers will blow up with the girls' reaction 😂😂😂

Hammurabi is most well known for establishing one of the first written code of laws. An extremely harsh set of laws, but a set of laws all the same. So justice was not solely at the whim of the ruler. The ship is well-named. Capt. Kirino is one of my favorite minor characters in the show.

Mo

Why does angry Milena scare me so much, truly terrifying girl haha

Alex

History like Nguyen seeing his comrades die fits firmly into “reasons are not justification.”

Naomi brings up “True Believers” in an earlier episode also, I think, as something to be feared. The danger of true believers/zealots is a common theme in the show, with the UNN Admiral Nguyen, Jules Mao, and probably even Errinwright (though I think he has more personal narcicism/ambition involved) being the main examples so far. They believe so completely they are right, and working towards an important just cause, on such a fundamental level that nearly any act however horrific is justified. I think at first Naomi was afraid Holden was one, but he’s shown he’s dedicated to a general good and always questioning himself and the costs to get there. Avasarala probably started the show as one.

And Io (‘eye-oh’) is a moon of Jupiter. So it is actually “the AO in orbit over the moon Io” (area of operations, military term for the area a mission is taking place in). The overlap, esp with the language pronunciation differences is tough!

RocktSurgeon

"AO" is a US military term meaning "area of operations". It's basically the immediate area within which military units are conducting either combat or non-combat activities.

Gaius Frakking Baltar

AO is area of operations :)

The XO on the Hammurabi (the MCRN ship) was played by the guy who played Cylon #5 on Battlestar Galactica.

XanderWhat

Yay!!!

Alex Mills

Richard Prußas
