This episode i was feeling so sad about so many characters. EMA, Levi, Zeke, Keith, everyone was suffering emotionally and physically. Savagery was a very fitting title.

I also think desensitising the people of Paradis to casualties and large-scale violence through Erwin's gambles throughout the series plays a part in the radicalisation of the people that we see in this season. The people are so content with the idea of Eren leading with his ability to do the rumbling, because they too are used to sacrificing lives to win in a fight when they have limited knowledge and agency. They don't know Eren's intentions and can't be sure how the Founder's power actually works, but they're willing to bet a dangerous amount on him because they're used to being fodder.

Also someone pointed it out but I just wanted to bring it up again, what Eren said about Ackermans was complete BS because if it were true, there's no way Levi would have let Erwin, who he was completely devoted to, die. Not only did Levi tell Erwin to die when Erwin was contemplating taking the soldiers and marching toward the beast titan, he also didn't choose to bring him back and chose Armin instead, if Ackermans were meant to only serve, then he would have chose Erwin.

No i agree i've read the manga and i think her attachment to eren is both a strength and a weakness. but in this case, her stopping armin was literally bc she didn't want to see her friends fight. And eren used it against her to further prove his point that is giving her an identity crisis which is why she just ended up standing there. It's naive to think mikasa doesn't let eren get hurt bc she cares about him so much. She does let him get hurt, she can't be part of the scout regiment without agreeing to him being used as a war weapon. She herself has reprimanded eren physically before, and although yes, even if it's for his own good, what else do you expect lol, they're basically each other's home she wouldn't hurt him unless it was for his own good, and he wouldn't hurt her(emotionally) unless he thought it was for her own good. The reason armin even got up to fight on her behalf is bc he knew she was so mentally broken that she couldn't defend herself, she couldn't be angry. Eren used words to break her and used punches to hurt armin. I'm sure that if mentally, she was in the right state, she would 100% defend armin from getting beat by eren

I know Mikasa cares for armin, but I don’t think in the scene you were talking about she punched him for armin’s sake. The only time she hits or hurts Eren is to defend him from himself. And if she was in “shock” then how did she pin armin to the table right after Eren says he hates her? I adore EMS but I really can’t help but notice how she failed to protect Armin in this scene. We know her attachment to Eren is her biggest weakness/ character flaw at times and I think it’s really important for her character development later (without giving too much spoilers).

I think the truly cruelest thing about the EMA interaction this episode is something that you two touched on in the review when you said, "Eren can save Mikasa...PHYSICALLY." But emotionally? I don't know. I truly hope there is a chance for some kind of interaction/forgiveness between the two of them before the end, but I just worry that in his single-minded determination to "save" her, Eren is irrevocably breaking her instead.

I'd rather keep and keep on trying to stop the cycle than just give in to the current oppressors and in a way saying their terrible behavior was okay.

While i really do sympathize with his stance of just wanting peace and being so tired of fighting anymore some of my biggest problems with the King's actions were that he run away leaving behind so many of his people to suffer and that he had accepted their ancestor's sins as something the people of today deserved to be punished for, so he wouldn't do anything when they attacked the walls.

Yes i mostly agree but my impression was that they were definitely going to attack the island pretty soon regardless of Zeke/ Eren's actions. Marley was barely holding back other countries' advancing weaponry, their scout ships kept vanishing and they really needed the island's resources to fight everyone back. Also Willy's plan of uniting everyone against paradis. If I'm mistaken or misremembering something please let me know.

He seemed to have some self awareness straight after the suicide charge about how he’s expendable and that they were manipulated into joining etc etc but now he seems to have dropped any kind of self reflection however that does not mean I don’t like his character and I think the way things are now with him makes perfect sense.

Finally another Zeke fan I thought I was alone out here he is my second favorite character as well under Eren but straight above Reiner. In this season his character became so much deeper and more complex it’s insane and my sympathy for him grew a lot I never expected I could like him but this season made him one of my favorites.

I feel like one of the reason why many people dislike floch is that his character isn’t just about wanting to protect paradise and his people. We saw floch basically bask in joy after their assault on Liberio, which resulted in the death of countless innocents, we saw him make that sadistic smile after hange’s realisation that she’s been fooled by the yeagerist and finally in this episode, we saw him ask new soldiers to basically beat keith sadis (the instructor) to the death to « prove » their loyalty to the yeagerist’s cause even though it was not necessary at all. Beyond his love for his country and his people, he seems to be a pretty wicked person. I feel like people would’ve empathized with him better if he had some self awareness about his actions (not that I complain, I really like how the character is written and what he brings to the story, I was just trying to understand why many people are hostile to him).

I think the other clue for telling that Eren is lying is that, back in Season 3, we had that flashback between Kenny and the former King i forgot his name, and he was basically telling Kenny about how the royal blood family works etc and he mentionned that there were others high clan/family there and two of them disagreed with King Fritz : The Ackermann and the Asian (probably the Azumabito Clan) and that the King's power didn't affect them, like he couldn't erase their memories at all. So would it be believable that Ackermann's would be slaves toward someone if they are originally one of the only eldians that can't be affected by the powers of the Fouding Titan ?

if you guys noticed at that little shot of the scouts in prison, mikasa wasn't wearing her scarf :/ also i love zeke, probably my second fav character in the show. also in the previous episode pyxis said that a good lie has some truth in it, which is very much applicable to the table scene so do with that what you will. they cut out a bit from the manga, but what eren said to her gave her an identity crisis and that the real mikasa never existed hence why she basically froze up. reading this as the chapters were releasing was hell bc i think i hated eren for a good 4 months

I think another dimension about Levi's character is that, not only does he see everyone dying, precisely because he's the strongest around, chances are he's probably going to survive almost every scenario. Besides the fact he probably struggles with this himself, his comrades know this and, therefore, dedicate their heart already knowing that, even if they die, they can count on Levi to "finish" the job. This burden is something that only adds to Levi's suffering, but also resolve.

It is tricky to say "Marley wanted to attack Paradis Island, so Eren attacks first". Because after the reveal of Zeke working with Eren, if you remember; Zeke was the person who proposed to launch an attack Paradis Island in the Marlian military Counsel in episode two. It was that episode where he also made the Tybur family, the holder of the Warhammer Titan, to be put on an obvious position and all of these turned out to be part of the plan for Eren to have the Warhammer power. Therefore, who really attacks who first? This is just another infinite knot that cannot be unsolved after so many history and bloodshed.

The music playing in the scene of Levi against Zeke is from the official AoT OST by Hiroyuki Sawano, as all the show's music for every season (edit: apart from this one, which is collaborative with Kohta Yamamoto). It's glorious, and on Spotify, and you should listen to it, it's some of the best music ever written for a visual medium in my opinion. The song in question is "K2-" and it also has the version "K21" instrumental and with "vocals." In this scene I believe it's the latter. So happy about your reaction btw, and sooooo looking forward to the last 2 episodes, just so I know we're suffering together until the series actually ends from there on :P
