Better Call Saul 5x08 Full Reaction

Comments

The lack of nomination is actually disgusting. Not cool at all

Isaac

I feel bad for anyone who watches better call saul without having seen BB. You CAN because the writing is that good but holy shit everything in BCS has so much more meaning when watching the shows in the proper order. IMO, it should be watched the way the creators intended, which is B.B. first then BCS. As for which do I prefer, BCS is more of a "slow burn" or slower paced I should say compared to BB, which isn't necessarily a bad thing since its appropriate for BCS' style and level of writing and performances which is superior imo. There are fewer “action scenes” but a lot of character development. As they get closer to the BB timeline, it gets more exciting in my opinion. I love BOTH series for different reasons.

Joe Lazarus

BCS definitely has a much stronger supporting cast and visual flair, and it's not even that BB didn't have that. BCS is just on the next level. I also like the slightly more chill pacing and vibes

Myeh

"Where are the awards, Emmy?! WHERE ARE THE AWARDS?!?!" "I gave them to The Morning Show!" "AGGGGGHHRRGHHHHHHHHHAAAAA!!!"

Taya

Yep, me. I enjoyed BB, but I am absolutely in love with BCS. The writing, the cinematography, and especially the characters. BB was gritty and thrilling, but BCS has so much heart. And Kim is a GOAT character for me. It's not recency bias either, I rewatched BB earlier this year and it only cemented my love for the superior BCS lol. I do think BB achieved masterpiece status with its last few episodes, particularly Ozymandias, which has yet to be matched, and BCS is not quite at that level yet. But I think it will most likely get there in season 6.

Taya

It's actually criminal that Rhea hasn't been nominated, as @Camzeee wrote - her character is literally the best written female character in TV history - and her acting in that role is absolutely superb. Her acting in the final two episodes of Season 5 for example (which I won't go into details due to spoilers as we're up to 08) - is absolutely bloody good!

Dustywood

God I'd be so envious of someone who got to watch all of Better Call Saul before Breaking Bad. It's nice seeing the cameos in BCS but imagine that same effect with BB?! Oh to have my memories erased and rewatch the show again.

TeaDrinker3000

BCS has surpassed Breaking Bad imo because the side characters are better written. Kim vs Skyler, Chuck vs Hank etc. The whole ensemble are superb. I think Walter White is the greatest character ever in TV and that's not likely to be surpassed but otherwise, BCS is better in a lot of ways. The strength of Kim's character is unbelievable. She's the greatest female character ever written imo. She's a heroine, a villain, a role model, a flawed character study, and she's not defined by her gender in any way. As a pair, Jimmy and Kim's storyline is amazing and your care for both of their characters elevates the series.

Camzeee

For me BCS>BB at this moment. but 1 more season to go. let's see how they wrap up and then I will be sure which one I like the most. There's also recency bias. Ask me in 10 years I guess :)

Krystal

It's an absolute farce that this show has yet to win an Emmy. Add to that Rhea Seehorn has never even been nominated for Best Supporting Actress. People can say awards are meaningless all they want but it still irks me that the creatives who have worked on this show have not been rewarded anywhere near adequately. It just boggles my mind after seeing episodes like these and the performances all the actors provide. Very much looking forward to next week's reaction of Bad Choice Road!

pumpkinpie

@Shadoe, I was thinking about that in depth lately, wherever or not someone should start with BCS or Better Call Saul, because the writers have done a great job at removing the "spin off" vibe and actually turning it into it's own premise, but then I think about Mike..... Walter shooting Mike... I really would like to know what someone's genuine experience would be like if they started with Better Call Saul and ended up in Breaking Bad after, as they'd have that cool vibe feeling when Saul makes his first appearance in Breaking Bad like "wow I know this character!!!" which is the same vibe we get when we are watching Breaking Bad characters in the Better Call Saul universe

Dustywood

lol yeah you get a lot of behind the scenes info

T0ast

I've been in the BCS is better than BrBa camp for a long time now, but no one should be starting with it.

Shadoe Price

It has, for me.

Isaac

My wife calls it 'Two Girls One Couch'

Steven Jacob

Someone also likes BCS insider podcast it seems like :) 💕

I am curious, how many people here prefer the Better Call Saul series over Breaking Bad? Breaking Bad is an absolute gem, but I'm now wondering wherever or not I should recommend first time viewers to Breaking Bad first or Better Call Saul - both these shows are beautiful. The initial discussion of Better Call Saul being a spin-off had doubts, now I feel it has surpassed the original series. Thoughts anyone?

Dustywood

The Esteem may not have had the same impact as the RV but it served its purpose. Hail Fellow Well Met.

Julian San

LOL. I need it as fanart

Isaac

We saw the hitmen being organized at the very opening scene (I have a job for you) that call that was made after the Twins picked up the money - though we know next episode Gus has an opinion elsewhere on that (which I'll keep quiet for this week)

Dustywood

Vince Gilligan directed the hell out of that episode. Beautiful work.

BobJ

btw when I was watching the last reaction vid a few days ago, my son walked up and asked "Are you watching those crying girls again?" lmao!

Taya

Lol yeah we'll just have to wait. It's funny, I keep feeling like I'm sick of this show because I've watched it so many times and I think I've overdosed on it but now after watching 5.08 I suddenly feel the pressing need to watch 5.09 immediately, yet again... haha.

Taya

Ahhhh, I'm so excited I can barely contain it now!! Taya we know EXACTLY why that episode is as good as it is! How great is it that through this channel we have an outlet for our love of this show?! 5 0 fucking 9 here we come!

TeaDrinker3000

Perhaps they do now, I know that at the end of this reaction posted tonight they lamented not being able to watch the next one right away. But I recall during the Attack On Titan reactions they used to film a good bit in advance. In any case, we'll see what they say on Wednesday. And Taya I feel you on your mutual adoration for 5 09. We'll have plenty of time to gush over it then, I'm wary of giving any soft spoilers, but yeah. 'What a fucking show', as Lola would say 🙂

TeaDrinker3000

It makes no sense for Gus to call the ambush, because he actually wants Lalo out of prison. That's why Mike came up with all that extra "evidence" so the judge would allow Lalo to get out on bail. Someone else planned this ambush. Gus wanted everything to go smoothly so he sent Mike to keep an eye on things. (or maybe Mike went on his own? idk)

Taya

yeah the character of Saul was Peter Gould's idea in the writers room of breaking bad and he even wrote the episode he first appears. Apparently the first idea of the BCS spinoff that Gilligan and Gould came up with was saul and mike in the desert drinking piss. They didn't get to that until this episode.

T0ast

I don't know, I think they film it on the same day they edit & post it? I could be wrong though. But yeah ... 5.09 is without a doubt my favorite episode of the whole show. I've probably watched it like 10-15 times and pretty much know all the lines by heart, lol. It's my favorite not just for you know what but I love every scene from the beginning to the end

Taya

I won't say why I'm excited because the girls read the comments, so let's save our conversation for Wednesday night 😉

TeaDrinker3000

Holy shit I didn't know that. The final season will be a behemoth.

TeaDrinker3000

Damn Gould has been doing great work then, even more excited now for season 6.

Pulp

Watched that episode and had heart attacks.

Julian San

this episode was directed by Vince Gilligan. He actually was only in the writers room of the show the first 3 seasons, Peter Gould has actually been the main showrunner of the show. After directing this episode he said he would return to the writers room for the final season.

T0ast

My favorite Kim scene is in that episode

Jyn Jilly

The girls have most likely watched 5x09 by now, and now it just has to be edited. I cannot express just how excited I've been for their reaction to 5x09 since I first discovered that they'd be watching Better Call Saul... Wednesday can't come soon enough!!

TeaDrinker3000

Yusss I was waiting for this, got my snacks ready
