Attack on Titan 4x20 Full Reaction

im just now editing the episode and rewatching it and it has to be one of the most beautifully done episodes of aot. i don't think i fully processed it while watching the first time but the story between eren grisha and zeke and how it ties together... no words... believe me when i say no words cause im about to start editing the review and i have no idea what we even said or tried to say, so good luck in advance, hopefully we'll have something coherent to say next week.. it's still gonna take a few hours for the edited one to be up, if you're in europe maybe go to sleep

anyone know where the edited reaction + discussion of this episode is at?

zekefreed

ending haters are relentless man, give it a rest

Mahni Alizadeh

after episode 5 the show will suck from then onwards. also if you're a manga reader and love the ending how can you like this episode? you know he's just acting according to you, right?

Chrissy

Ahh. Apparently they’ve been reuploading content for a while now. I thought it was just new

Brant Dela Cruz

Wasn’t sure where to post this but I just came across this channel that was reuploading your vids with japanese translations. Wasn’t sure if you guys were aware of this. https://youtu.be/WVxx-FEtB-A

Breaking Bad get's hailed as the greatest show of all time, and as such Vince Gilligan gets unanimous praise. It's well deserved, but alongside Gilligan there was a core team of 10 writers, alongside other producers, so the quality of the writing cannot be attributed to just one mind. But then we have Isayama, one man who came up with everything, with the first volume published when he was just 23. If manga/anime were held to the same degree of reverence as western productions, Isayama would surely be revered as one of the greatest living writers.

TeaDrinker3000

Eren is the child that grisha wanted to have in liberio, but iin the walls, and zeke is the child he wanted to have in the walls, but have it in liberio

Vicente de Paulo Guimaraes Priante

Same Zeke is also one of my favorites he’s my top 3.

Melkor

Saw this comment on Youtube: "Let's show the basement" For the child Eren, the basement of Yeager's house For future Eren, the basement of the Reis`s house Two meanings In other words, Isayama is genius

Mohammed Al Jamal

i just watched the edited and lol, i was so focused watching the full i didn't even realised you were in a different couch. i would say congrats for moving but i have moved so many times i know what a pain in the ass it is, so good luck and careful with the back when lifting heavy things. now, going back to the discussion. i love the moment lola was all concentrated trying to remember how 'nurture' was pronounced and milena was like "i don't even know what nurture means" hdhdaj i love your dynamic, it is really entretaining. i've liked zeke for a long time now, probably since i watched 3x20, but when i read the sole salvation and this in the maga he catapuled himself straigh into my top 10 of the show. i'm always changing the order of my favourites tbh but i think he's my 7th favourite.

sand_fl

The last one is so true.

Mati D.

Girls please react to the episode breakdown for this episode to make the time loop thing a bit clearer for you! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UNdkTWqrNEk&ab_channel=TurtleQuirk

traydo0r

Time in Aot is pre-determined but not linear. The future effects the past and vice versa. So the events of the past were always going to be how they were, and the future will always be how it ends up. Hope that clears up the confusion about the time mechanic.

Brandon Williams

Girls, please think about watching the Season 2 Ending after the next episode, you’ll be in for a big surprise!

BoredTonberry

I think Eren was just disgusted with that ideology the king has passed down generation after generation. It goes completely against everything Eren believes in. The king would let his own people die violently because he sees it as penance, but Eren on the other hand is just like “tatakae…tatakae…tatakae.” Eren is a direct contrast

Ethan R

cant wait for that youtube discussion, shits like crack

Rich

These girls are wayyy to smart for their own good lol

Taiquan

I didn't really liked the ending, I know that the last chapter is really good, but next one is gonna be huuuge, i saw the preview and I remember a lot from the manga, not all, but a lot, I hope they keep it the same as possible.

Mati D.

Probably "imma eat that bitch"

Kc

The nasty thing about Final Season is actually that we haven't even been inside Eren's head since the scene when he kissed Historia's hand in 3x22. We only see him through other characters, hear what he says, but ultimately, as in this episode, we only get to see what he does because we slip into other characters' heads. For example, I would love to know what was going through his head when he listened to Frieda's speech.

Robert H.

The "season finale" with episode 12 will probably be my highlight.

Robert H.

Another youtube channel I follow just reached 3x11, and man, that episode hits really different after this one if you have time to go back and watch it...

Sarah

It's because there were children I imagine. AOT is still broadcast on TV over there so has to adhere to network standards. Recommend non manga readers go check out the manga if they want to see the full horror Grisha/Eren created

Kc

People have already answered this but just putting my two cents. Remember Grisha saying why won’t Eren show him everything especially with what happens to Carla. Eren was drip-feeding Grisha information to manipulate him perfectly into doing what Eren wanted. Afterwards Grisha wanted Zeke to stop Eren but when he got back and learned of Carla’s fate, I assume he resigned himself to whatever anger he had left towards the Marleyians and let Eren do the rest.

Leno

Blessed :) My last reaction till i get a job again! Thanks for all the uploads!

Emori

just realised grisha said “before my wife and children are eaten” - he considered Mikasa as one of his own

Sam

The Attack on Titan subreddit is actually very good with preventing spoilers with tags and blurring. Anyway, these were nice lol.

stack

i like the lines around the eyes personally, it's how they look in the manga and i feel like it helps show dread or despair (or pure rage in eren's case this episode) a lot better than just regular shading or shadows

ML9

lol, the the one with the mappa eyes

sand_fl

Yeah that makes sense.

Yic17

In short he doesn't make contact is just looks like that, girsha just remembers where Zeke is standing and what is said because of eren memories it just looks like he is for the show (at least that how I interpret it)

Cas_nc12

And to those anime-only fans who can't watch Attack on Titan memes because of the risk of spoilers: Here are some safe, spoiler-free memes from the episode. https://imgur.com/a/6557uP5

Robert H.

can anyone explain how grisha made actual contact with zeke ive read the manga and i still dont know maybe i missed something,,,,also the anime does not present it like he is looking at himself through erens eyes

adam john peters

U mean give a 'head' to the devil o.o

Sauce Pls

DameDesuYo had better subtitles

PS

Eren also walks around behind the Reiss family so Grisha can get a better view of him talking to the Reiss family, Eren was the director all along

PST3

We've seen it already. Putting it in would have eaten screen time better suited for current plots.

Zyrus

I imagine that scene at the door was like a Deja Vu. He literally already experienced that moment, just through the eyes of Eren staring into his face. Like seeing into a mirror.

you are better of waiting for tomorrow as the billing cycle ends in 10 hours

PST3

Grisha learns later Carla died, this is why Eren doesn't send him those memories, so when he hears Carla is dead it will trigger Grisha to get Eren to seek revenge by giving him the injection

PST3

The crazy part is Grisha isn't looking at or hugging or listening to anyone in real life, he just knows Zeke and Eren's positions and what they were saying since Grisha can see through Eren's memories and can tell where they were standing/what they were doing/what they were saying when they were looking through Grisha's memories here in this episode. It's genius. In the first episode, "To You 2000 Years From Now", the anime did not show Grisha's face when he showed Eren the key to the basement. In manga, Isayama drew Grisha’s face and he was definitely looking at strange direction. So he had this plot planned 11 years before the end of his story.

Robert H.

im not even a manga reader

George Maxim

and is a fact knowing by everybody lol

George Maxim

is telling literally nothing about the directions of the show

George Maxim

Lets give a hand to the devil himself, Eren Jeager! the mastermind himself.

Moose

where is the spoiler?

George Maxim

You wanna spoil the end too while you’re here? Jesus.

Laura Rossi

yeah you should defo give the other translated one a watch so much different

Safwaan Rahman

gogoanime has the best translation

Safwaan Rahman

George Maxim

Awh the subtitles that you're using are not as well translated as the other one

Safwaan Rahman

@melkor they said in dn 24 comments that they will post ep 25 today

Jaqcues

This episode was a 10/10 for me but I wondered why they censored the carnage Grisha did to the royal family.

Melkor

Girls, at 9AM serbian time, the subscription for February gets renewed. Do you think you can squeeze in Death Note 1x25 before then?

I’m pretty sure they changed the schedule didn’t they? Maybe I’m wrong

Melkor

The soundtrack of this anime is second to none

Kc

basically Grisha saw himself through Eren's memories like a "3rd party viewpoint" video game character, so like Tomb Raider or GTA or The Witcher (etc)

szepi79

As a manga reader this episode DELIVERED. Eren's look of pure loathing never fails to make me both upset and unbelivably hyped. What a phenomenal story so far

Kc

yes

Jaqcues

"It was an amazing episode, but I felt like a lot of people expected it. " I _knew_ what was going to happen, but still I got the chill, because it was so masterfully done

szepi79

this episode was the one that broke me when I read it in the manga. judging by this was the episode where you girls were the most silent any of the AOT reactions, this was a highly emotional peak for you as well. and this episode is the reason why Grisha is one of my favourite characters not just in AoT, but in all animes as well.

szepi79

Feel so sorry for anime onlys tbh as unless you're willing to have a social media blackout on all things anime, it's nigh impossible to not be spoiled on something. I started reading the manga at around chapter 119 (where Eren gets his head shot off) and saved myself so much grief haha

Kc

It was an amazing episode, but I felt like a lot of people expected it. Both in how Eren acted and from it being sometime impossible to avoid spoilers. It's hard to avoid spoilers when YouTube thumbnails from year(s) ago say stuff like "EREN THE MASTERMIND". Next time I'll have to go incognito for any search on a big show or something. Still an amazing episode, especially with the Zeke scene and all.

nova

Will there be Death Note today?

JoloPolo

Very fitting that you're watching Death Note right now as well. The Animation Director for this episode worked on Death Note and you can tell with those crazy eye close-ups of Grisha and Eren. It's a fairly distinctive choice :)

Camzeee

Clarification if you want to read Grisha could not really hear Eren or see Zeke he was remembering Eren saying those words and seeing Zeke because of the attack titans ability to receive memories from future users Grisha was having two sets of memories for the same events one set from himself being there and one set of Eren and Zeke walking through the memories. So While Zeke was never really there to get a hug He was able to remember where Zeke was standing because Eren was there looking at Zeke Sorry if this does not make much sense it is a little complicated

Cas_nc12

fell to my knees when grisha told zeke he loves him. that one is gonna haunt me

Sebastian

I asked the same question yesterday and someone told me this: Grisha wasn't planning to do so, until he knew Carla died. He then was like ok that's it! I'll inherit it all to Eren and let him do the terrible things he showed me in the memories.

Mohammed Al Jamal

Others have listed a lot of possibilities but here is one more - Maybe Grisha realize how this works. He knows that in the future Eren gets the titan. If he gave it to someone else (in Grisha's mind), there is a 100% chance that Eren is eating that someone. Hence he bitterly gives Eren the titan, who at the time is his loved son. Could also be considering that with child Eren's mindset he will die as soon as the titans attack trying to fight back. The line to Zeke to "stop Eren" is not a contradiction because he'd realized only the untold future can stop what Eren has done and Zeke does live in that timeline.

Rinne

You need Tier 3 $10 for full reactions.

Mati D.

Impressive prediction from Milena during the opening credits.

Andy

Yeah I suppose Carla dying and fueling his anger to want revenge again is a good point too.

Yic17

he learned that carla died so then he was like fuck it and decided to give eren what he wants. the tl is fixed, you can't change the future, so if future eren influenced grisha to make him kill the founding, then eren HAS to have the attack titan, like grisha has no choice but to give eren the titan if that makes sense, he's a slave to his own "Fate"/future just like eren is.

Gigi

Right?? It such a hard-paradox that its scary!! I imagine about fate, and how everything chained by fate and never be free!! And imagine yourself as a person who fate is making that fate happen so it is your fate….

Phú Hưng Quách

Do i need to have the most expensive tier, to get acces to the aot reactions weekly?

Breadsticks

It's probably gonna be in the discussion but just in case, when Eren kissed Historia's hand he actually saw all this, remember the memory, it's Grisha talking to Frieda to stop the Titans, he saw the future and all that's is gonna happens. In case you don't remember, this is the memory when he kissed Historia, just don't read the comments just in case: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AcgnzNGlnO8&ab_channel=LeonReiner

Mati D.

OK thanks for all the answers. They all make some sense but still require a bit of speculation. I think the two that make most sense to me is one by Andy where Eren can literally take over his will turning his eyes green and second is by WoWzErZ where Grisha really didn't have a better plan/option but to believe that Eren's plan is the best to free Eldia. If he didn't go along with the plan, it was basically game over or giving up to whatever Marley wanted to do.

Yic17

You girls got so emotional in other peak episodes, but this one make you go all silent even with the zeke scene. This episode is absolutely on another level!!

Phú Hưng Quách

i do think it may be a bit of eren manipulating him again and grisha losing his mind more when he found ou about carla. it's clear eren manipulated him to a point where he only showed the memories he wanted grisha to see, so knwing about carla and then finding out suddenly may have messed with his head.

sand_fl

When Eren kissed historias hand he saw his future self manipulating grisha and every other previous attack titan holder along with other important horrible future memories you girls will see later. It’s crazy how he was able to keep his composure after seeing himself do something so terrible.

Sergeant Jay

same, i think they're an hour ahead of me so i doubt one of they wil stay hours awake to edit and upload. i'll watch it when i wake up even though as i mentioned this one is probably the most i've been exited for an episode discussion since the beginning. i really want to know if at some point they'll change their perspective of eren, even if it only is a little bit.

sand_fl

Two possible reasons: a) Grisha changed his mind when he found out Carla was eaten b) Eren only later showed more "future memories" of what's to come to Grisha and that made him change his mind I haven't read the manga, but those are my guesses.

Nikodem

When i look at Lola face after episode, she is so done poor girl)

Vall

It’s crazy to think Eren manipulated every previous attack titan holder for this very moment. He manipulates Kruger, grisha and every other holder for the sake of eldians in paradise that’s crazy. Future Eren even Manipulated his younger self in a way.

Sergeant Jay

wihtout spoilers, his time was ending, he already knew eren was going to get the attack titan, and if he didnt give it to him who knows what would have happened. he most likely didnt want to risk it and hoped that somehow everything would be fixed in the end because no one else could have taken the titan except eren at that exact moment.

Korin

It's never explicitly detailed, but we can assume through context clues that if Eren is able to manipulate this moment in history he's able to manipulate others as long as they're attached to the Attack Titan's holder in some way. In the manga it looked as if Eren's green-ish eyes overtook Grisha's eyes (similarly to how Frieda's are overtaken by King Fritz's in this episode to go from blue to purple). Suggesting Eren could just outright control a previous Attack Titan user if he so pleased.

Andy

I'm confident to say that next episode is gonna be the best episode in the entire anime, it might get a 10/10 on IMDB, i just can't wait for Sunday.

Mati D.

thanks!!

berketozlu

Yeah I get the time travel paradox. But I still felt like Grisha's intention/action felt off. It would have made more sense to me if he didn't tell Zeke to stop Eren. Even with the paradox, I wish there's not that little contradiction in his intention/action. I wish it's more than just that it's a paradox. I want a more logical explanation WHY Grisha still went ahead with it from his point of view.

Yic17

Breakfast and AOT. :)

Melkor

its a paradox, they gave the injection because it was setting in stone, because if he did t give the injection, eren won t come to tell him kill reis family, and if he does not kill reis family even will not have the titan, and nothing that we see in anime would happen

Vicente de Paulo Guimaraes Priante

Same. But this time I'm definitely going to sleep. The episode probably won't release before 4 or 5 am in my timezone, if even. At least I don't have to wait when I wake up tomorrow.

Savage Starlight

One question if anyone can answer (without spoilers of future episodes). Grisha told Zeke to stop Eren. But by this time, he hasn't given Eren the injection/key yet. So he himself could stop Eren if he wanted to. Why didn't he? This is something I felt was off in this episode. It doesn't really add up why he would continue to go on and give Eren the injection, the key and tell him to go to the basement. I suppose one possibility is that Eren continued to influence and force him to do it. But it just felt off with the placement where he told Zeke to stop Eren just before that. If this is something that will be explored further in future episodes or will be explained in future episodes, then please just say so without spoiling future episodes. Thanks.

Yic17

S3ep21: The Owl, to Grisha: we must keep moving forward until the price of our actions are paid "Even we die, even after we die. This is a story, you began. is it not?" ... End of that episode "whose memories are those?"

Nagisa

Man, DS and AOT are really pushing each other! giving us bangers every Sunday.

Pablo

Who is brainwashing who now eh...

Mati D.

I told you, your minds gonna blow

Dan Mena

Just got done making food, perfect timing 😭

Glory.1K__

Damn I don’t wanna go to sleep I wanna wait but since I’m in Europe I know I should go sleep. FUCK

Melkor

Welcome to peak fiction. Isayama is a fking genius

Ki-Young Joannes Jang

So i think it's safe to say that we can know understand Owl words when he said "To save mikasa, armin and everyone else". He also said: Who knows? I'm not sure... whose memories are those? Eren sent those memories from the future (name of the episode) to the Owl to keep moving forward, keep pushing.

Mati D.

Very excited to watch, thank you! : ) Cheers from Michigan.

kangamazing

Ok, so i saw this comment yesterday on youtube by a guy named jayson harter and i'm just going to paste it here because i think it's a top tier comment   "The same way Titan holders can view the memories of their predecessors passively and are influenced by their personalities; (Bertholdt -> Armin) the Attack Titan can see memories of its future inheritors and be influenced by the will of those yet to come. (Eren -> Past Holders)   In short, Eren isn’t aggressive because he holds the Attack Titan. The Attack Titan is aggressive because Eren possesses it. Thus influencing the entire line of succession in reverse.   Essentially in the same way the Reiss family is subjected to the will of the previous Founder Karl Fritz. All Attack holders are subjected to the will of Eren in the future"   this episode is probably the one i've been waiting for you two to watch because i know how deeply you care about eren and i'd love to see if your perspective on him change (not the feelings though, i know you love him and that's not going to change) but seeing how he manipulated grisha and made him kill children may change something.

sand_fl

oh no here we go

it’s here! I will just put this out first and comment later lol
