The Expanse 1x01 Reaction

we're finally starting the expanse! we've seen the first two episodes and the story seems very interesting so far, no one warned me about the mike cameo in this episode, so it seems appropriate that the expanse follows better call saul. again this is gonna be coming twice a week starting from next week, and the full will be up in a couple of hours

The Expanse 1x01 Reaction

Comments

Ceres is the largest asteroid/dwarf planet in the main asteroid belt beetween mars and jupiter. Its real in real life aswell :)

Joao

You must be new. They STAY talking about BG loool

Isaac

You mentioned that one of the wrtiters of this show comes from Batlestar Galactica... Have you seen it? If not, its a great show.

SirMark89

I mean, that's fair. Obviously most audiences tend to prefer fast-paced stuff. It just isn't the best style for some other audiences, so those of us who like slower-paced, world-building style content will obviously prefer season 1. Season 1/book 1 arc (and also season 4 which has some similar elements, which is similarly less favoured by the fast-pace oriented audience) feels like it takes the time to live and breathe in the world, whereas later seasons the world feels more of a backdrop to the characters. Nothing wrong with that; I enjoy the later seasons, but TV that continues to let its world truly breathe and gives the audience plenty of time savour it will always come out on top for me.

TeddyBearBonfire

When Holden said "They nuked her", he was most likely talking about the Canteburry, which is the name of the ship, and referred to it as "her", which people often do when talking about ships (both space and sea),

ODIS

This has solidified a resub from me for about a year. Damn girls, you got me!

Griff

Oh heck yeah! I'll rewatch this, the series blew me away!

Jason Michael

Season 1 was very hard for me to get into, but I pushed through and this is now one of my all time favorite shows. Get to season 2, then make up your mind. S2 is where the show hooked me.

Drew

I literally stopped watching and came back 2 or 3 times because it was so hard for me to get through s1, and this is now one of my favorite shows. It's not bad, I just found it incredibly hard to get into because of how it is paced and presented. Also my favorite characters in the show -Amos, Drummer, Ashford, Bobby, Etc, are either not in season 1 or have nothing to do. Season 1 is almost entirely set up and world building, which pays off in the long run but it just wasn't very interesting when I first watched. This is coming from someone who doesn't need a lot of action, one of my all time favorite shows is The Leftovers, which is almost purely a character drama. I just found nothing in season 1 of the Expanse that really gripped me. Again, I ended up falling in love with this show, but I always tell people who I want to watch it to just bare with season 1.

Drew

Also, yes, there are more space stations/hubs throughout the Solar System and multiple others in the Belt. The show will get into them as it goes on. Tons more ship detail to look forward to! The best out of any show out there

Dante

Thanks for the heads up! I wouldn't have been stuck too long. No faces from mars, yet, I see

Isaac

This series has so many details and nuances in it it's very hard to grasp it all in 1 episode for most people. As others have stated, the general fan consensus is that episode 4 is where a lot of people get hooked. However, the story doesn't truly open up until the beginning of season 2. I can tell you that after the first 5 episodes of season 2 this show turns into something you could have never imagined. That's quite a few episodes to get through if you still aren't liking it after episode 4, though.

Dante

A little clarification, Grayson from Arcane's actor is not the rep for Mars. Her role hasn't been explicitly stated yet, but it is shown that she works in some capacity for the U.N. on Earth

Dante

I'd say it's one of those shows that gets better with each season, at least with the first few. I got impatient and read the book after season 2, so after that I was watching as a "book reader" - if you're not into "space stuff" and "hard" sci-fi then it may not be for you. If you are into that stuff the show is amazing, the books are also good - the plot is a lot more intricate and 'expansive' in the books but the show does character moments better IMO.

Delmoi (忍者神)

Should be fun to re-watch this with you guys. You're lucky to be able to binge watch, I got so into the story after season 2 that I ended up reading the books, which were a lot of fun, but I still had to wait to finish the story, lol.

Delmoi (忍者神)

Episode 4 is the generally accepted threshold. I'd argue episode 3 is one of the more boring episodes too, but it's followed by an episode good enough that many fans know the episode by name. If you can make it to the end of episode 4 and you still don't like it, then I think you can be reasonably confident you won't like the rest of the show.

jveezy

So, I just finished the episode. Not bad for a pilot! They are notoriously difficult to execute and some of the greatest shows have lackluster openings. This one had plenty for me to get into. So far, I've clocked Earth, Mars, Belters and Freelancers/Contractors as the types of people we'll be seeing. I don't think anyone important from Earth has been shown, yet. However, I see that the rep for Mars is Grayson from Arcane! I had seen everyone reacting to Arcane refer to Grayson by this character, so it's interesting to see her in action. The scenes with Miller felt like your usual Training Day affair, but he clearly has some care for doing the right thing. Is Ceres the only space station/hub or just the most important? Also, I loved that the flip and burn was depicted in a restrained manner. It really adds to how nuts it is to control movement in space. Hope there's a lot of ship detail like that going forward. I love the look and feel of the vessels I've seen. I'm pretty bummed that the first episode ended with a cliffhanger because 2x starts next week. Not cool lol

Isaac

Personally, I loved 0it from the start when I first watched it, but a lot of people say they didn't fully click with it until episode 4. Up to you. There are plenty of shows out in the world; no need to force it if it isn't for you.

TeddyBearBonfire

I watched the first episode and couldnt get into it, be honest here should i keep going or what do you all think?

Josh Spencer

Fun fact: Episode 4 of season 1 green lit season 2 of the show

Alexander Shirkov

Yup, first season up to the end of the first book is IMO the best arc of the entire show, honestly.

TeddyBearBonfire

I'd say that ‘she's gone’ is almost certainly intended as a double meaning, rather than specifically referring to the ship. It's simultaneously relevant to the whole Knight crew, and carries a specific personal weight for him.

TeddyBearBonfire

Damn, this always baffles me. The first book arc is my favourite stretch of the entire show.

TeddyBearBonfire

This is one the best shows of the last decade.

Norrin Radd

heard good things about this show on twitter recently. i'll check it out with yall

Sebastian

I love it! I'm with Milena, it's hard to understand at first. So Mars is the next planet over, "the belt" is the Asteroid Belt which is farther than Mars. "She's gone" means the ship is gone - it's tradition that ships are female. Ceres in the asteroid belt and it's much smaller than Pluto but they're both dwarf planets.

Em McG

i srtated watching this when you said you were going to react to it and honestly i'm glad i did because it is an amazing show

sand_fl

Oh ok, ty for answered me!

Merlino

There was a poll a few months ago before they finished korra i think

sand_fl

Keep in mind the 1st season is a set up season. its good, but it's set up. Keep that in mind. Its one of the greatest shows of all time.

John West

Never seen it, so this will be my first new show on the channel! I'll give a few comments after I watch episode 1

Isaac

Completely disagree with everyone who thinks the first season is weak. I think it’s among the best. And for me it’s the measuring stick to compare all other seasons.

Luis

A really cool detail in the show is all the walls on earth to hold back the water because sea levels had risen so much. Honestly this show is all aout the little details.

Alex

I don't think Season 1 is slow. Its just season 1 feels more like a crime drama to me while the other seasons have more action in them.

Dieter Mai

Yeees!! One of the best sci-fi shows out there, you guys are gonna love this one.

Cation

I am so goddamn excited for this. I think if you don't find Better Call Saul slow, you won't find this to be slow, but the later seasons certainly are a lot faster in comparison, and the payoffs to all the buildup are incredible. I've finished all 9 books and this is one of the most satisfying, well-crafted experiences I've had consuming anything. Only 6 are adapted for the show (for now) so hopefully by the time you're done with this, we'll have news on any future plans for the final 3. Also it doesn't hurt that this show is so visually stunning. Also the intro changes slightly over time to reflect events in the show. It might not be noticeable right away, but in later seasons it's nice to see those small touches in detail (that are not spoilery like anime intros). Edit: And when you say this all has to be connected, this is definitely a show where you'll get lots of questions that lead to more questions, and when it starts to come together, you won't believe how well it fits, and when you rewatch, you won't believe how early they start to make all the connections that you didn't notice before. A lot like Attack on Titan (but not quite as many questions and a little less mean with the cliffhangers). It makes all the effort you spent learning about the world and characters and asking questions feel like it was worth it.

jveezy

I had this show on my list for a while and only started watching it a few weeks ago, because I wanted to watch it before your reactions. I completely binged it in less than 3 weeks, it is so good.

Andrew

Yes!! Hope you girls love it!

Andres Osorio

Awesome this show in so good, and criminally underrated. Ngl there is a lot of set up in the first 2 season, not to say they are boring at all. But in season 3 the pay off is incredible. I was dumbfounded when Syfy canceled it, because that was one of the best seasons of TV I have ever watched.

Danny Evans

I've been looking forward to this so much!

Alex

I need to catch up on the last 2 seasons, this show is so good

h0nestly

I have a question: was there a poll to suggest you which serie you could start? I’m supporting on patreon since only a month so i don’t know how it works. Cause i would have some suggestions.

Merlino

Yessss best show on TV the last 5 years

Khary Williams

I am beyond excited for this! Love this show. I just started reading the books, which I also am loving so far. This show is the reason I started watching reaction videos, basically the first 6 months of the pandemic was me watching every expanse reaction available. I'm already predicting who your top 5 favorite characters will be in the end 😀 One of the characters is my favorite character of any show. Obviously I'm not gonna say who it is, but I'm curious to see if you love them as much as I do! I'm willing to bet you will!

XanderWhat

Milena switched to italian mode in this thumbnail 😂

A few non-spoiler points that I think are very valuable to know going in: The Expanse falls under the genre of “Hard Sci-Fi” so the writers take great care to ensure scientific accuracy whenever they can. Obviously, some liberties are taken, but for the most part, the show follows the laws of physics. This show does a lot of show-don't-tell when it comes to how things work and function in space so it's beneficial to pay attention to small details as not everything gets explicitly stated. Almost every location mentioned in the show actually exists in our Solar System. I liked to look up a map of the Solar System to see where the major places are actually located during my first watch to get a better idea of the distances we’re dealing with and where major characters and storylines are taking place in relation to each other. Some people say the first season is slow, and it’s definitely the weakest season, but it’s all very important world-building and character establishment. The universe of The Expanse is so fleshed out and filled with an insane amount of details due to it also being a book series (9 novels 3 short stories and 5 novellas) which makes it so easy to immerse yourself in. It’s also the best-written sci-fi show of all time in my opinion, largely due to the book authors also being writers on the show, and has some of the greatest characters on TV. Blind Wave recently said in one of their Season 6 reactions that they think this show may have the highest number of amazing characters out of all the shows they’ve watched, and I definitely agree. This comment ended up being longer than I intended. Clearly, I love this series a little too much lmao. Can’t wait for you two to see this masterpiece! I know you’ll fall in love.

Dante

Oh shit, here we go. This show is amazing but the first season is really slow. I generally wait till reactors have seen the first season to start watching. See you guys then.
