Yeah I agree For all Mankind is not that good. It sort of has the same visual style as a "prestige" TV show like Mad Men or something but the writing is not that good. It's fun if you're really into space stuff, but it's like 90% Astronauts sitting in this dingy bar complaining about their lives. They add a bunch of totally pointless personal drama that basically only exists to pad out the runtime b/c they don't have the budget to 13 hours or whatever of actually doing space missions/training.

2022-02-05 15:12:24 +0000 UTCI’ve seen For All Mankind and enjoyed the first season but thought the second season wasn’t as good. It’s an alternate history show that presupposes that the Soviet Union beat the United States to the moon and creates a branching history off that. I think the first season is a lot of fun but it deals with a good amount of niche American space history so probably not for everybody. It does have incredible female characters in it too.

2022-02-05 10:28:13 +0000 UTChttps://i.redd.it/cnb9um8blf651.png I think taking a look at this map will help to level out where everything is happening a little. A lot of people don't have a good grasp on the layout of the solar system, and I think things get confusing when that's the case. This map is made to include Expanse fictional locations, and shows the orbits of the planets/asteroids starting from the sun on the left, to the furthest reaches of the system on the right. Not every object listed on the map is relevant, many are included just because they're notable points in the solar system in real life. The map is made as things are at the start of the first book/start of the show. So it doesn't necessarily show some things that will become relevant later, but it mostly does the job. Everything with Miller, the detective, has taken place on Ceres, which you can see as one of the objects in the asteroid belt. In real life, Ceres is a dwarf planet (in the same category as Pluto, and an interesting little fact is that like Pluto, Ceres was historically also considered a full planet at one point, albeit much longer ago). It is the largest body in the asteroid belt. As you can see, the asteroid belt is the next point after the orbit of Mars. This is where we get the terms inner and outer planets. Everything on the left-side of the Asteroid Belt is considered to be an inner planet, so the Belters considered Earthers and Martians to be 'Inners'. The Canterbury, the ship Holden and co. were on, was hauling ice from the rings of Saturn, the second planet beyond the asteroid belt to return to the belt. You might find it useful every now and then to return to this map and just see where things are when you hear locations and have no idea where things are happening. Those we are left with on the Knight shuttle are Holden, Naomi, Amos (pronounced more like Aim-us), Alex, and Shed.

2022-02-05 01:10:31 +0000 UTCHopefully I can help answer some of your questions and clear up some confusion: Right now, the three main locations are Earth and Luna (the moon) which are under United Nations control, Mars which is an independent militaristic society (think Sparta), and the Belt. Our crew of 5 that survived the Canterbury are somewhere near Ceres in the Belt. The Belt encompasses the entire Asteroid Belt which is a vast ring of various sized asteroids that are between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. The largest asteroid in the Belt is Ceres and it is home to millions of Belters that live under the surface. There are other asteroids in the Belt that also have Belters on them but none of them are as large as Ceres. Despite Ceres’ size, it is still not large enough to produce its own gravity. In order to create gravity on Ceres, it had to be mechanically spun and the Coriolis effect creates a gravitational force that is roughly equivalent to one-third of Earth’s gravity (or 1/3g). This means Belter bodies cannot handle the strength of the gravity on Earth and it will eventually kill them if they are exposed to it for too long. Not everyone on Ceres is a Belter, Havelocke, the new detective, is an Earther that now lives on Ceres. If you were born in the Belt, you are a Belter. “Beltalowda” just means the Belters as a collective. If you were born on Earth, you’re called an Earther. If you were born on Mars, you’re a Martian, but they are often called Dusters as a derogatory term. Belters also often lump all people born on Earth and Mars into the same group and call them inners or “Inyalowda” in Belter Creole. Belter Creole, often just called Belter, is the official language of the Belt and all Belters speak it. Many, but not all, Belters also speak English. Belters will often throw Belter Creole words and phrases into their dialogue. While the show may not translate them, after a few seasons of hearing it you’ll be able to pick up on certain meanings. When the Canterbury was flipping around to go answer the distress call of Julie Mao’s ship, it was performing a maneuver called a “Flip and Burn”. In space, there is no gravity or air resistance. If you want to slow down or fly in the opposite direction, you have to flip the ship 180 degrees and then “burn” the engines even harder than you were before in order to counteract the speed you have generated and start going in the opposite direction. For a ship the size of the Canterbury, this is going to take A LOT of thrust. A maneuver like this creates an insane amount of g-forces (upwards of 30 G’s which is 30 times Earth’s gravity) and the bigger the ship the harder it is to do. In order to handle this level of g’s, the occupants need mouthguards and a special mixture of various blood thinners, blood vessel reinforcers, adrenaline, and other stimuli to protect the organs and blood vessels from being crushed by the g-forces and to keep them conscious. There are a lot of details in this show and it can be overwhelming at first, but it’s what makes it so great. The attention to detail from the creators is probably the highest I’ve ever seen in a show. I’d put it on the same level as Breaking Bad and BCS. Every shot means something and there is a lot of show don’t tell. You guys will catch on soon and when you do you’ll be hooked!
