The line of Lopez about people on earth living pointless lives, with free food, free housing, free drugs, what he's refering to is that loads of people on earth have no jobs because of automation etc., and are given enough to survive but that is all, and not allowed to work, or study. There are 30 Billion people on Earth. That is why people would choose to give up life on earth to try and make a better life for themselves in the Belt. People on Mars, about 6 billion, everyone is active trying to make Mars into a new earth, bring oceans and life to the surface. Everyone has a purpose, a job, a role in the project. To a Martian, the idea of Billions of people living purposeless lives on Earth, is inconceivable. They nickname them 'Takers', that all they do is take, and don't give anything back to society in return. Funny fact about Shed. The Expanse started as a table top role playing game made by the authors. One of their party ended up getting a job in a different city and had to quit the game. That player's character was Shed.

As a physicist, I can add that slingshots are a very popular way for NASA and ESA to accelerate objects in space without investing much propellant. The accuracy is impressive and is almost perfect with today's computers and AI systems. The only disadvantage is the time component. You sometimes have to wait a long time and correct the course of your missile with jets until you reach the perfect point in space. While Voyager 2 was left relatively simple (at that time you could hardly do more), they did some really wacky shit with Rosetta, as you already mentioned, where slingshots around asteroids were made. But the project I'm most looking forward to for personal reasons is LISA. This gravitational wave detector will help so much to observe the universe that many new breakthroughs will be possible. On Earth, we are really pushing the limits already.

I have a feeling who is gonna become their new "Hank", but I don't wanna say

Where there is opportunity people will travel, the far reaches of Earth are colonised by people who were/are willing to risk everything to get an opportunity at a new life. Plus this series is set hundreds of years after the solar system was colonised so generations have born and died in the Belt which makes it their home. Regardless of conditions most people will fight for their homes even if it is a terrible living situation, they didn't choose to be born in the Belt and are now fighting for what they believe to be their home I think.

@sand_fl oh i see, that sounds interesting, it's been a long time since i've seen an interesting horror story with a good story other than cheap screamers and cringey possessed kids, I'll take a look

Some real life lore to tie in with the show: Phoebe is the 9th moon of Saturn. The Canterbury was out mining ice from Saturn's rings, then got blown up on the way back. The Donnager was sent to Phoebe Station nearby and was on the way back when they picked up the Canterbury's survivors and now that ship's blown up too. So now they're in a smaller Martian ship flying somewhere near Saturn. Regarding Bizi Bitiko (the real one) and what all those people in the room were doing: they were placing bets on illegal Slingshot Racing, Bitiko being one of the racers. Slingshotting is a technique where a pilot throws the ship, without thrust, around a planet or other large object using the gravity of the object to accelerate and turn the ship. Slingshot racing is illegal, because it's extremely dangerous, because if you aim wrong or go too slow, you just fall into the planet like Bitiko did instead of slingshotting around the planet. Slingshotting, more formally known as gravitational-assist, has been used in real-life spaceflight. One of my favorite examples is the ESA's Rosetta spacecraft which spent 12 YEARS using gravity slingshots from Earth, Mars, and some asteroids to get into position to put its lander on a COMET!

Phoebe is a real object, a moon of Saturn. It's pretty interesting, it couldn't hurt to skim the Wikipedia on it.

@JoloPolo Hill house is probably one of the best short shows i've watched. amazing show with great writing, great acting and a great director. the book it is loosely based on is amazing too though completely different. there's a couple of things i didn't like how they adapted it on the show like Theodora and Eleanor in the book are kind of queer coded and into each other and in the show they're sisters, but other than a few thing i think the show is perfect. i'd recommend it to anyone. hill house it's the show that brought me to this channel and i've been here ever since.

@TeaDrinker3000 same pal, they're non-anime comment sections are not that large lol i had this show in my watchlist for a long time and when they said they were watching it i started it honestly, a great decision

sand_fl

Glad to see a familiar face in the comments for The Expanse posts, given how small the interaction is in comparison to the other shows 😅

Naomi is a Belter which is one reason why the Martians think she’s OPA. And as for why someone would ever leave Earth…let’s just say life on Earth isn’t quite as idyllic as Martians and Belters think.

also it's hilarious how jumpy milena is, she gets scared, screams and scares lola with her screaming 😂 i love your aot reactions but i missed this kind of reactions too ngl this makes me nostalgic for hill house/bly manor

sand_fl

i'm sorry but them saying they love shed and calling him baby and their favourite literally seconds before his death was hilarious and then lola saying "he died and i still don't know his name" dhahduha hilarious but same, his death really shocked me

Some funny trivia about Shed’s death: the authors of The Expanse book series, who collectively go by the pen name James S. A. Corey, started the story as a role playing game. Ty Franck (one half of James S. A. Corey) originally tried to pitch The Expanse as an MMO but got rejected. He then instead turned it into an RPG and got his friend, Daniel Abraham (the other half) involved. While they were planning out the story and playing the game, the person who was playing Shed had to leave the game, so they had to figure out a way to kill him and they decided to keep it in the story for the books and the show.
