These guys are great at world building but the last book was really just about tying everything up, so not introducing anything new. I really liked the penultimate (2nd to last) book though.

One company makes the show (Alcon) and then sells it to other networks to distribute (SyFy for the first 3 seasons and then Amazon for the next 3). There's also different deals for who can make money from the show for online streaming and for how long, which is what led to SyFy cancelling the show after the 3rd season. The authors have said that their original plan was that they'd be happy to be able to adapt the first 6 books with Alcon, especially since a lot of shows don't get to last that long (science fiction ones especially). It's very expensive to make with not a lot of viewership, and it's not something that people can just jump right in in the middle and start watching, so the fanbase grows slowly. It's the kind of show that will end up being more popular a decade after it's done than it was while it aired. My own speculation is that filming during Covid was hard on top of all that so they're just taking a break and letting everyone go work on other projects if they want to. And then whenever they do decide to come back, the show will be more popular than ever. And maybe they'll sell a few extra books in the meantime too. Also the people in charge of the show have talked about it being a pause even though they haven't announced any plans to continue. They also wrote the 6th season like they expect to continue (unlike something like Korra where you could tell they had to write every season like it might be their last). A big reason why I expect the show to come back in some form is because people LOVE the last three books. I think the 8th book is the best book and the 9th is a nearly perfect follow-up. Fans can understand why the end of the 6th book was a good place to pause, but the story for the final trilogy is so good that it would be a shame to miss out on it. It truly feels complete by the end of the last book, and this part of the story is just too good to miss out on adapting.

The title of this episode of course ("Windmills") and the title of episode 1 ("Dulcinea", the name of the Don's imaginary dream woman), the discussion between Avasarala and Holden's mother concerning the Cervantes novel, and the name that Holden chose for the ship ("Rocinante" which was Don Quixote's horse in the novel). There's a couple more references yet to come in this season; the writers really wanted to hammer home the notion that Holden is essentially a well-meaning person but is also prone to naively take on fights that he can't win.
