i also think you guys forgot to talk about the mikasa&louise scene. i think her relationship with louise shows her development in the sense where she's reflecting on herself bc louise is a parallel to young mikasa but, is a version of her if she wasn't saved emotionally but just physically by eren. eren as a child taught mikasa to fight against the cruel world for survival but also taught her that beauty in the cruel world resides in home and interpersonal relationships through him giving her the scarf. louise on the other hand was saved by mikasa physically but not emotionally and grew into this person who doesn't understand mikasa at all but loves what she represents (violence), and supports eren not for who he is as a person but for what he represents(a hero creating a new world through genocide). mikasa's hostility towards her is similar to how she acted towards kiyomi, bc she didn't like how kiyomi saw the value in mikasa bc of what she represents and not for who she is as a person. I think it shows just how much mikasa takes pride in her own values/love and how she's turned off by jaegerists not only bc they're fascist pricks, but bc they're warping the memory of her love into a rageful political figure who's unrecognizable to her. louise never understood the meaning of the scarf showing just how little she understood mikasa, despite her thinking she's growing up to be like her. Even in the jail scene in part 1 of s4, louise represented the perception of eren as a killer which was why mikasa was so hostile toward her and why, how after louise saluted in s1, she got headaches of eren violently killing her kidnappers. It was because she's realizing there's a part of eren she doesn't know and has refused to acknowledge. And yet she holds hope which is why she didn't let louise keep the scarf, but still isn't wearing it showing her own internal conflict. i think ppl don't see the complexity in mika's character cause she's rlly stoic and the only time she shows emotion is when she's about to lose the ppl she loves, but there's so much more detail when you see the juxtaposition of the scenes she's in, what she represents in the story, and when you understand her perspective of the situation given the traumatic experiences she's been through that shaped her to become who she is.

Yeah, I hated the reunion with Annie. Isayama botched that so much. Not only do they just happen to sit at the same table (unless Destiny is actually something that exists in a story, coincidences are really bad writing in general). But also, last time they saw her, she was killing everyone has the Female Titan and there the whole deal with Armin's feeling for her too. Instead of tackling any of those two interesting points, Isayama makes a pie eating joke or something? That's really the worst moment in the manga/anime for me. I really don't get what Isayama was thinking...

MaxVSTheGames

connie: i want you to help me brush the titan teeth, hi you can do it can't you? rinner in season 2: eren why wouldn't you join me and bertholdt to our village? it'll mean we wont need to destroy more walls. good deal dont you think? when a person so desprate on one strategy he might cannot be able to think about other nerativs..

amir.cricket

I feel like a big part of this show is people having to choose between their own wants versus say a greater good. Erwin choosing between his dreams or humanity. Eren choosing between his friends or the world. Connie choosing between his mom or Falco. Historia choosing being her own person vs her role as a queen. This is true for so many other characters too like Ymir, etc. etc.

food. just food

Conny was laughing at the way Annie was eating the pie bc it reminded him of Sasha. ;--;

botchie

I don't understand why you guys keep trying to instill manga readers thoughts into them. just let them understand and enjoy in their own way.

Among the next four episodes, t̵w̵o̵ one will be in my top 10, so yes. Edit: I just found out that Final Season Part 2 ends at Chapter 130... Now I am sad.

Since I had always done it the last times: The memes of the week: https://imgur.com/a/72N2eQ7 Important info on this: There were hardly any good memes, as about 99% of them were Putin memes, which I find simply disrespectful to the Ukrainian people. I just added the three highest rated Putin memes at the end. If you want to see them, you can.

Robert H.

I can understand the criticism for this ep/chapter. Felt a bit off but still some really good moments and did what it needed to to set up for the next arc. Next few eps should be great!

Chris V

I do not understand why this passage is criticized, if there is no dialogue between Armin/Annie/Conny it is simply not to be redundant with the Annie/Hitch scene where she explains her intentions. Also Hitch is a soldier of the city, she is busy with the refugees of the rumbling while the others must act as quickly as possible to stop Eren. Now for Conny’s turnaround, is it so surprising to see a soldier lose his cool after losing his best friend in front of his eyes and discover that your childhood friend you went to school together is about to destroy the world. Armin’s sacrifice is to force him to come to his senses, if he can kill a foreign kid for his mother, he can just as easily kill a close friend. As for apologies to Falco, Isayama did not consider it necessary to break the tempo of the scene (Falco already learning for his power and the death of his brother by Gaby a little off screen). It is also in a general way to accentuate the oppressive side of the rumbling, you have to think fast, meet quickly, act fast, manage your emotions just as much.

Please, share with us your re-watch of the intros, it would be nice.

Diego Francisco Banchero Pizarro

I watched AoT Junior High without knowing they would still use the same voice actors, I was so shocked when I heard them!

HenryM

Yes! Attack on Titan: Junior High! It would be so fun to watch their reactions to it once AoT is completely done, just for them to see these characters in a much happier setting as well and see all the easter eggs (as well as the very surprising amount foreshadowing for a show that finished airing in 2015) It's also only 12 episodes so it wouldn't even take long to watch. Even if they don't do reactions they should just watch it anyway.

Chris Gibson

ya youre right, ive seen varying translations of that line so i wasnt sure

Sebastian

Hahaha love u guys, ‘her last name’s finger, he lost two fingers.’ Perfect 😂 ur expressions throughout were so precious, isn’t this show full of angst? 😂

Ceige

It is not an interpretation. In season 1 episode 17 he repeats that same line right after episode 16 where he mentions how he cannot recognise which bones are Marco's while burning the bodies. Marco was what motivated Jean in the first place.

Rinne

I don't know if you're aware of its existence, but you should check out Shingeki! Kyojin Chuugakkou, a... spinoff? alternate universe? in which the charactes are middle school students. It's funny, light, and the characters are voiced by the same actors. A way of lightening a bit the continuous horror that is this show <3.

Flo A.

Robert's comment perfectly depicts what's wrong with this chapter. Also I'm not spreading gossip or whatever you said. I've been sitting on the contents of the episode for years now and I've decided for myself that it doesn't measure up to AOTs standard. There's a ton of people that agree. I know you're really combative from your essays in the DN reactions and I'm not looking for comment drama. Agree to disagree.

Rinne

at first i wasnt sure what jean meant by "ashy bones wouldnt forgive me" but i read a comment that said it was a reference to marco and his ashes after that bonfire funeral scene in season 1. i like that interpretation

Sebastian

@mCole Then you have to watch the episode 4x23 again. Annie and Hitch had even talked briefly before Annie threatened to turn herself into a Titan. @Bobby You're right about that (that was probably the thought of Isayama), but it is still criticized. It didn't seem right considering the events less than an hour ago and the big unknown of Annie's motivation (for Armin and Connie; Hitch knows).

Robert H.

Exactly Annie in fact saved Connie in s1 which Connie was still grateful about it. Plus the world was ending so he kinda lost it and we’ve seen that Connie uses laughter as a coping mechanism, (in s3 when the houses were falling after Bertolt transformed he literally laughed☠️) so he might've been laughing at the absurdity of an enemy casually eating pie in front of him looking like the least threatening thing in the world lol

alpassione

he laughed be cause he was reminded of Sasha and Annie never did anything to Connie

BOBBY

Annie didn’t know it was Hitch though until she saw her face so if she didn’t have a problem with Hitch why should she have a problem with Armin who’s been talking to her for four years straight and probably just saw her the other day?

alpassione

@Rinne, The quality of the writing did not drop. Rewatch the episode. There were so many character driven moments and dialogue that speaks volumes. The writing is still good. Stop spreading gossip. The only issue this chapter faced in the manga was pacing issues, which was fixed in the anime.

Chapter 126, on which this episode is based, was heavily criticized by the fan community at the time of its release almost exactly two years ago. The dialogue and action around Connie and Annie felt wrong. But the problem is not what happens, but how it happens. For example, with the Marley arc, Connie was no longer a comedian. He was portrayed as broken after Sasha's death and feared betrayal everywhere because of Eren. He even accusingly asked Mikasa and Armin if they were on Eren's side after the attack on Zachary. He has anger issues and can't keep his emotions under control. Because of this, he even almost tried to kill a child to get back the last piece of family he has left: his mother. But less than an hour after this event, he can only laugh at Annie's appearance, whose intentions he does not know. He didn't even apologize to Falco. Annie, unfortunately, also has her problems in this chapter. She doesn't know what Armin and Connie are up to. She had even threatened her friend Hitch who talked to her for years when they first met again. We just expected a different kind of dialogue when all the characters met. Moreover, it has already been hinted that she likes sweets and eats them very gulped (Season 2). A scene showing that could have been done after Connie and Annie made a scene. The scene with Hitch also made fans angry. Isayama probably didn't have a better idea to separate her from the group again, hence the letter. Since the dialogues were really heavily criticized among the fans, it was hoped that Mappa would change something here. Unfortunately, this did not happen. However, in the last two years, many fans had already taken the effort to rewrite three to four sentences of the chapter. I've picked out just one for you: https://imgur.com/a/TvIiXgq The hasty speed of events will be explained with the next episode. Isayama just wanted to show something unexpected with Jean, since this episode/chapter would have been very quiet.

Robert H.

never felt like the quality of the writing had dropped just the fact that the pacing is different then how it usually is

BOBBY

The last few chapters are not objectively bad, you can just judge them a lot. The very last one is also rushed but I'd say AOT is still a strong 10/10 after it. The hate is because a lot of people misunderstood where the story is heading. Anyway, we won't see those till part 3 or a movie.

Rinne

That’s actually good to know. It felt rushed and i’m glad it’s only the reunions, i can get over that. Honestly it’d be hard to rush the ending as *whole* since it has been building up for a while now so i wasn’t too worried about that, but some people have been super negative so i’m glad to see a reasonable take.

jweher

For anyone wondering, the quality of the writing dips a bit mostly in this chapter, I guess Isayama wanted to get over the reunions REALLY quickly. It's normal from now on.
