I think dub is the way to go, but I think there should be a separate poll. Brotherhood only, vs Original then Brotherhood. I fell like skipping straight to brotherhood is like deciding to watch Avatar but purposefully skipping out on a lot of character development episodes. Intentionally skipping Zuku Alone, The Takes of Ba Sing Se, the recap play episode, etc. There is a lot more that is expanded on, with a different focus by watching the original first. The only problem right now is that only just recently, it's become hard to find where to stream the original series because it's been taken off of Netflix, but it isn't on Paramount+ (which contains Nikelodeon.)

@Maia Hi Maia, thanks for the response. Respectfully, I believe which VA is more talented is the wrong question. The relevant question is whether you prefer the experience of the English or the Japanese VA cast as a whole. I could point actors I like more in each and even get more nuanced and say that Romi did this scene better and Vic that scene, but that's only one character in a show that's great because of its ensemble cast! Ultimately I voted dub because I enjoy it more in its totality than the sub and that's all the reason needed :).

Live action and cartoons are different because cartoons don't have "real" voices. The voice and language are determined by the VA. Bryan Cranston has a voice, so dubbing over his voice with another would ruin his performance. Edward Elric doesn't have a voice. He doesn't speak English or Japanese because he's just a drawing. The VAs breathe life into the character, and the VAs can be good in either language.

My main problems with the subs with FMAB isn't that the japanese voice acting isn't good, because it's great. The actual subtitles in every translation I've seen are just way clumsy. The actual dialogue in the dub flowing and generally making sense for an English-speaking audience puts it ahead of the sub for me.

It's not really a matter of canon. The animes are two different stories, based on the same source material, with different goals in mind. The first adaptation of Fullmetal Alchemist was always intended to be its own story, with its own ending, because the manga was ongoing. The story is more or less the same up to a certain point, but there are differences as early as the first few episodes. The second adaptation (known outside of Japan as Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood) was intended to be a faithful adaptation (minus the first episode). It's a shame that they couldn't adapt everything, but I can understand why they'd rush through the content that was animated in the original. The final manga chapter and final anime episode were intentionally released on the same week. Both versions have the author's blessing.

I watched this in VLC where I can switch between sub and dub, so often times for interesting scenes I'll flip the language and rewatch it. I guess the dub was OK, but not that special tbh. Other dubs like Kaguya Sama/Love is War I'll watch in both English and Japanese, the dub is hilarious but the original Japanese is also hilarious. Point is, you guy should watch Kaguya Sama/Love is War.

tbh, the beginning of the original show is better than the beginning of brotherhood. Since at this point they are still the "same" story, it's a valid comparison. The original took time to develop the beginning of the story as the brotherhood was speedrunning. Also the soundtrack "Bratja" that is the best of both shows. These points aside, brotherhood is better in almost everything

It’s not really the same. The original is made the alongside the directors and creators of the show and they help them and coach them in the way they want it to sound. Dub is created separately after the fact. It’s animated and written to sound a certain way. Dub is just whatever the dub studio thinks is best and not the og creators. I have a funny idea - have LM watch what they prefer - then in the full reaction make 2 versions, 1 dubbed with English actors and the other in the original Japanese language. LM does not divulge which version they watched. Before editing, the 2nd audio is added so both audio versions are in the video file - then begin editing, at the end select audio1 and render, then have to switch to audio2 and render to create the 2nd video. It could work! **So far only a small fraction have voted, typical vote totals should be 1,200+

I think cowboy bebop is amazing dubbed, baccano (a show that flies under the radar so much and its so sad because its so good. So underrated.) but baccano makes so much sense since its set in old school new york pretty much with mobsters so the new york accents the dub had were just preeeeeeem, plus it was filled with new york culture and references so it just sounded like smoother to me. I almost feel like thats it for me...hm..hard to say. Its really subjective. Totally a person to person thing

I think the dub being better is just native english speakers saying it is, because that's just what they saw first and are familiar with. I don't think I've ever spoken to anyone who isn't a native english speaker and actually prefers the english dub. Because why would they? If I were you, I'd just watch the first episode in english and then in japanese, and then decide which one you prefer.

I think the whole work is much bigger than one single voice actor. While he may be part of the dub, so are many other people that worked hard on it to make it as special as it has become. They outnumber him. Personally, I can also separate the craft from the person. I can say someone's talent is amazing, even if the person themselves does morally bad things. But that's just me.

I choose sub because 9/10 times there is simply more range for talent when viewed in the original language. However! When a show goes out of its way to focus on a dub with the same enthusiasm and raw energy that English cartoons or animations bring, I’ll consider it. And then there are shows like this and cowboy bebop and space dandy that are simply meant to be watched dub because it was part of the vision when making the show. FMA was originally Japanese, yes, but the content in the show feels more relatable with an English attitude…at least, that’s my two cents

This is one of my favorite series of all time. I've watched it both in sub and dub multiple times. Honestly, it doesn't matter which one wins the poll because they are both S tier stuff. The story is just as emotive, funny, sad, hype, etc and the characters are voiced by an insanely talented cast in both versions. Let's just enjoy the series. In the end the language is seriously a nonissue.

Japanese VA’s Romi Park is a legend and by far my favourite Edward. People will have different takes on the sub-dub debate for FMAB and for me it’s fine either way, but I really like sub more. It just throws me off when people pretend the sub is objectively inferior, which it isn’t in the slightest. Well, dub is still probably gonna win so it is what it is.

Literally i am someone that is 98% a sub watcher, but It is not because I hate dubs, but only that I have almost NEVER found a dub to be BETTER than the Sub. So why would I watch something worse, you know? Plus dub has some translation issues, and dub voice actors are 95% of the time terrible. Dub died around 2010. Now we have 16 year olds sounding like 30 year olds...BUT Basically my point is, I literally will watch whatever the show is best in, it just so happens to be that its almost always sub.. But, that is not the case with FMAB. Genuinely from the bottom of my heart one of, if not the best dub out there. Fmab, baccano, and cowboy bebop are the only shows I can genuinely say the dub is FAR better than the sub. Fmab dub is literally more in tune with what the mangaka wanted. Apparently, she prefers it herself. Its not everyday you can watch a dub this good. Youd be honestly missing out if you didnt watch it dubbed.

Actually, all reacters started with the dub, only GoodwinTV and FilmBuff started the series with the sub. Moreover, GoodwinTV had already decided to switch to the dub before the release of the first two episodes on Patreon. As far as I know, he lives in South Korea and probably had difficulties getting the English dub so quickly. Anyway: I haven't seen any reacters with dub fans bitching about it.

Actually hearing a language you can understand adds so much to the emotional impact the lines have, it's just that normally the VA is just so much better in the sub than in the dub. However, FMA:B has to be the most famous example of it actually being the other way around, the English VA's did a tremendous job on this one. Really hope they go dub.

But it’s not about context. It’s about the emotion put into certain scenes and how the VA are coached by the directors and creators of the show. So LM couldn’t understand the “full context” of Connie’s scream in the most recent AoT episode because they didn’t grow up in Japan? They didn’t feel the intensity of Eren’s scream at the end of season two when Hannes dies? Voice acting is about more than just reading off lines.

With Death Note I was clearly in favour of the sub, although I always watch the two final episodes in the dub, but with FMA the dub should clearly be chosen. I even just took the trouble to look at YouTube and, with the exception of FilmBuff, every reacter was watching the dub. And FilmBuff has only watched the first 5 episodes so far and is currently pausing the show so as not to overwork himself. I can imagine that he will change to the Dub. For example, GoodwinTV switched to dub after two episodes. In the end, I have one more idea for you: Watch the first two episodes as the winner here in this poll and then just watch the two episodes again as a rewatch in the other variant. Then you can still decide which you liked better.

People who opt for subs because it "preserves the original intent" forget that people consume media to enjoy it, not as an intellectual exercise.
