I like that Miller shot Dresdent. The politics on Earth are already growing somewhat tiresome to me, especially because of those having what seems like over-hawkish positions and because there seems to be self-enriching going on with the rabid hawk UN Undersecretary. Chrisjen Avasarala (the older female politician on Earth) is an interesting character. I like that she plans to reach out to Fred Johnson.

2022-03-17 14:23:16 +0000 UTC“TANYE WA CHESH GUT” best badass Belter has arrived. I honestly didn’t care much for Miller until this episode. As soon as he shot Dresden, my appreciation for him tripled at least. Dresden was way too dangerous to let live. He’d already said he’d never help make a vaccine or stop his human experimentation. He’d already killed, the workers on Pheobe, The Can’t, The Scopuli, The Donager and Eros. He’s just manipulated the two soldiers in the room into agreeing to let him carry on with his “research” with “no restrictions” by saying that the protomolocule was sent as a weapon. When it was sent to Earth, the only life was algae. Imagine what he could have talked other people into letting him do if they’d taken him back to Tycho and either Earth or Mars or Dawes had gotten hold of him. Team Miller all the way! Shoot the mad scientist.

2022-03-17 06:26:58 +0000 UTCThe really interesting thing is this. Phoebe was used as the vessel to send the protomolecule to our solar system. Phoebe is old... really, really old. It was captured by Saturn's gravity eons and eons before humans or just about any higher life forms had inhabited Earth. That means that whoever sent it, most likely only expected it to hijack very primitive life like amoebas or other single celled organisms. When it was captured by Saturn, life on Earth was allowed to advance and flourish. Now that the protomolecule is finally in use, it's first encounter is not with single celled organisms, but instead with advanced multicellular life. The protonolecule learns and adapts, but what are the consequences for it when it encounters life far more advanced than its mission originally expected?

2022-03-17 01:58:27 +0000 UTCI look forward to the discussion about Miller's actions at the end. As a scientist, one know this dilemma pretty well. As a physicist, I am fortunately not confronted with it, but my former flatmate, who had studied biophysics, extracted almost 100 mouse embryos from freshly killed mouse mothers for his thesis "Detection of cell density and distribution of neuronal primary cells on glass neurochips". Talking to him about it was interesting and creepy. Personally, I would probably have let Dresden's research continue under strict conditions, under control, so that he could not harm any more people, but at the same time treat him like a prisoner, since he still has to atone for his crimes. Similar to what Johnson had implied before Miller shot him. Moreover, I would pass on the knowledge gained from him to one's own confidants, so that in case of an escalation Dresden can be shot without losing everything and having to start from scratch. But I can also understand any person who would shoot this maniac immediately. A lot of him seems pulled out of the air, a supposed threat that he doesn't substantiate in dialogue. His actions are disgusting and the number of people who have died because of them is enormous. At the same time, I also think to myself that if the people on Eros can no longer be saved, Dresden's death would ultimately only ensure that all these people have truly died in vain. But one aspect should also be thrown in, of course: His theories about what his research could be used for sounded all selfish and in line with the urge to be godlike. Changing people's genetic material so that they become superhumans involves great risks, which are increasingly being addressed in genetics research. In case anyone is interested: The CRISPR method enables targeted genetic modification. In 2019, a Chinese scientist defied research standards and altered the genetic material of humans. It was a huge scandal. But while with the CRISPR method it has already been realised that research cannot be prevented and would rather be carried out in controlled environments than under the control of dictatorships, here with the blue stuff there is probably still the possibility of destroying everything so that this research does not come within the power of humanity. While it was very much noted that Dresden lacked any empathy for human lives, there have been many scientists in the past who have regretted their research in retrospect when they saw what it was used for. In the end, however, Miller clearly acted in a humane way and did justice for the suffering on Eros at him. Julie, for whom he probably developed feelings, probably also played a decisive role in this. I think I have written enough about this for now. I look forward to their discussion.
