What Naomi did was hit the Simulation button before launching the missile(and "Simulation Active" came on the screen), so when Holden came up, the screen appeared as though the rocket was on its way to the sun.

I was waiting for someone to point out that the soldiers on the UN line were firing behind them, not at the Martian Marines. Usually you two pick up right away on stuff like that. I thought Lola was going to say it a few times but then got distracted by the million questions she is coming up with!! Anyhow, that is all I have to say for the moment. ;) Get ready for a load of cliffhangers!

DrEEsky

Poor Drummer (the woman next to Fred Johnson) that Lola said she doesn't trust. You guys should keep an eye out for her. She's my favorite character besides Holden.

I don’t know if I would say totally unrealistic. A lot of what The Expanse shows being done with the Epstein Drive are things that scientists have speculated fusion propulsion would bring to our species: faster travel, more efficient fuel usage, and the ability to create artificial gravity through acceleration. This is all theoretically possible with a powerful enough mode of propulsion. Whether that’s fusion, ion, or something else entirely, the main premise still holds.

Dante

All these theories working against natural forces. Once we master gravitational propulsion, that will be the true game changer!

Chris V

I mean it’s theoretically possible… if we master nuclear fusion… but yea, it’s on the brink of impossible.

While I agree with everyone recommending the books, I would like to warn you that sometimes the show does like to move plot points around or introduce some characters earlier or later or differently in ways that reveal things. If you really do want to read the books alongside the show, I'd recommend watching seasons 1-3, and then it's safe to start reading/listening to books 1-3 while watching seasons 4-6. No chance of spoiling yourselves that way.

We should probably warn you that the next like 20 episodes all end on intense cliffhangers lol. The Epstein drive is the only totally unrealistic human science thing in the show. It makes it possible (in the Expanse universe) to do point-to-point journeys and simulate gravity on ships. It makes commerce and trade across our solar system practical and affordable due to the tiny amount of fuel it takes to generate massive amounts of thrust.

ParanoidGary

In the thick of it now. From 2x04 on this show is just on another level.

The Solomon Epstein story line in this episode is not from book 2. It comes from The Expanse novella entitled "Drive".

I just started the audiobook series after the collection of all the short stories "Memory's Legion" came out recently (I'm putting them in order with the main books). It really adds a lot to the show even if there are some differences. The feel of the thing is similar enough, even if some of my favorites might not be as prominent as I might have hoped.

Kirk Deighton

The books are great, and I agree that the audiobooks are great as well. I have trouble with people saying that the books are "better," because I think that's a personal opinion and I'm not sure everyone shares it. I love the show and I love the books, but I feel they are separate things and you really can't compare one to the other using broad terms like "better" or "worse." They made a number of changes to details of the story for the TV version, but in almost every case they make sense for the medium -- certain things work better on TV, certain things work better in print. In virtually every case, the books and the show tell the same overall story and hit the same major story points, but sometimes the way they get to those points is different. And there are places where arguably the show improved on the books, improving on certain characters, dropping plot lines that didn't work or were superfluous, and so on. But there are also places where the books handle things better because they have the time to do so, or because the books can take us inside people's heads in ways that visual media cannot. So ... it comes down to personal preference to some extent, but I think the majority of people who have read the books and watched the show would tell you that they're both great, in different ways.

Tony Camas

I can.

The reason that this episode focused on Solomon Epstein is that his invention (the Epstein Drive) was a major technological paradigm shift; i.e., "an important change that happens when the usual way of thinking about or doing something is replaced by a new and different way." Harnessing the protomolecule would represent a technological paradigm shift greater than the Epstein Drive by several orders of magnitude. How - and for what purpose - it may be harnessed is the *big* question that will be explored extensively during many episodes...

I cannot recommend the audiobooks enough

Disspacebar

Definitely the best audiobooks I've ever listened to!

Dante

Seconded on the books. I can also recommend the audiobook version. The narrator is so good. It is truly rare to have a story perform so well in all its adaptations and mediums.

Aldo Cassola

The books are very good, and for the most part the show follows them very closely. There are a few characters from the books who were changed for the show to simplify things a bit. But I definitely recommend reading them, you get so much more detail about the characters. Just how much of an in over his head innocent do-gooder Holden tries to be, how incredibly brilliant Naomi is, and Amos thought process. Also, yes, the intro does change like Game of Thrones did, but its hard to catch.

Ken Hendel

Since you asked if the books are good, YES!! They are better than the show, and the show is a masterpiece. There are a total of 9 books and 9 short stories/novellas. The novellas aren't necessarily required but they are all great and give more context to things (one of them, The Churn, is about Amos' backstory).
