Mr Robot 1x08 Reaction

Comments

It was my download manager (Video DownloadHelper). They just issued an update that corrected the problem.

Anthony Ubelhor

I only tried to download the first few, but it worked for me

tom

You should try to go back and watch some of the earlier scenes with Darlene and Elliot again, like the first time they interact. It's crazy how in your face it is from the beginning.

Colin Huckestein

I can't download any of your YouTube reactions to Mr. Robot. I've set my VPN to US, Canada, United Kingdom, and Japan. I can download other YouTube videos, but not Mr. Robot. Anyone else having this problem?

Anthony Ubelhor

hadn't realized you guys started reacting to Mr. Robot but when I noticed one of your uploads on YouTube I immediately resubscribed to your Patreon and caught up! I knew you two were going to absolutely love this show. I'm sure this will end up on the top of your guys' list of favorite shows once you reach the ending. Just thinking of how great the other three seasons are has me excited to see you react to certain episodes/moments. I look forward to more!

You are actually wrong about your assumption of what the movie would have been like. The ending of the movie would have been the same ending as the series, as confirmed by Sam Esmail himself, he just expanded on the story in between. The ending was quite literally written before season 1 started filming, and Esmail said from the start that it would take 4 or 5 seasons to get there (season 4 has 3 extra episodes so he was right on the money of course). The network this aired on, USA, was extremely accommodating to Esmail and basically gave him free rein to tell his vision. Starting with season 2 every single episode for the rest of the series is directed by Esmail himself. I am interested to see if your opinion changes as we continue through the show!

Dante

It makes sooo much sense in retrospect but I think the difference in skin tone between the two helps not even plant the thought in people's minds on first watch. Like a lot of people who maybe have less experience with interracial families would expect Elliot's sister to have a darker complexion. I have a similar situation in my life where people don't even think 2 biological siblings are related, but once you look past that you see all the little connections - same eyes etc. Great casting for a great twist.

Kara

I couldn't disagree more with OP. The final 2 episodes of S1 are beautiful and setup an incredible following 3 seasons. Hopefully you'll feel the same by the end!

Kara

I think the issue is you're treating your interpretation of everything as a foregone conclusion. It's one thing to assess the trajectory of a character as you see it, but it's another to frame the situation that the only way for that opinion to be alleviated is by the show retconning or improvising. Not only does that put both the show and the writer in a lose-lose situation, but it makes it look like your opinion can never be proven wrong, which might come off as a little pompous. Plus saying that a show shit the bed is gonna be offputting phrasing to a lot of people, especially when your actual opinion just seems to be that you think certain characters were underutilized.

tom

@Rynsen Oh absolutely I'm going to keep watching! I binged season 1 after watching I think the first two episodes with LM but by the end of it was content to just watch from here with them at their pace, didn't feel the desire to binge it myself anymore. I do think that the ingenuity shown in this season bodes well for him being able to flesh out the world and the side characters - which I even said in my original comment - I am cautiously optimistic this show will in fact be 'good'. But I think an argument that you can't judge an entire season of a show on its own merit and instead have to judge it holistically as is inferred in some of these other replies is frankly ludicrous. I'm willing to get into it more particularly in the comment section of episode 10, but I think it's completely fair to judge for example, the trajectory of Angela in season 1 and wonder how much worse this season would've been if that B-plot had been axed entirely. However, I feel there is a bit of a disconnect between people understanding that the writer/director had originally planned it to be a movie and what that means when he decided it needed to be made into a longer form tv show - I am firmly of the belief that the movie he had planned would have largely been what we see in this first season, as opposed to an almost AoT level of plotting out every minute detail of a 4 season length story at the outset - especially knowing that in the world of TV there's no guarantee of being given so many seasons to tell said story. (A fact he more than anyone would have been acutely aware of while completing his scripts.)

Love when they're reacting to Tyrell when he comes into a scene, they make the same facial expressions as all of us whenever we see Tyrell. His character is so good lol, I love the chaotic element Tyrell brings to the series

Dustywood

Same, Milena. It's funny how Tyrell is less creepy and more pathetic after he murders someone rather than the other way around I like how guilty Tyrell is in the scene with his wife. The way he so clearly tries to get her to think that they should murder Sharon Knowles so that he can pass off his mistake as a stroke of genius is such a childlike thing to do. We've all had that moment where we don't want the confrontation of revealing we fucked up so we try to find a way for the other person to think it's not a big deal before we say what it is

tom

I love how big of a reaction you had to that first scene with Angela and Darlene. Because of all the theorizing it ended up being such a big moment. For most reactors I've seen it's sort of vague confusion, like 'Huh? I guess they know each other'. And Lola saying 'It's happening, it's happening' just like Elliot XD. True Mr Robot fans already It's definitely a good idea to hold onto and cherish the wholesome cute moments in this show Also, don't cut out discussion thoughts! Even if what you say is a crazy theory it's still entertaining. Remember the Ackerman Warrior theory?

tom

You should probably wait for confirmation of which episodes they've seen before talking about them. Also I don't think you know what a retcon is lmao

tom

Unless I'm missing something, Tyrell's wife (Her name is Joanna for future reference) wasn't acting when the detectives told her about the murder, and she wasn't cleaning off blood in that earlier scene either. Remember Tyrell strangled the CTO's wife, so it's not like he would need to clean blood off of him. Her reaction was genuine and you can see her compose herself before inviting the detectives inside, since at that moment she connected the dots and realized what her husband did.

tom

I was about to comment this. She even told Elliot that he's the best and she loves him. Poor dude, all the signs were there from his perspective but the next woman he kisses just had to be his sister... I don't notice most things on a first watch but I thought of this immediately the first time I watched this episode

tom

So great seeing your reaction to the sister reveal! And if you ever think you are over complicating things, don’t worry about that I’m not sure that’s possible! It’s got so many layers of things going on throughout and keeps adding more. And more things that redefine earlier parts of the show but fit in perfectly. So more wild stuff to come throughout all the seasons!

RocktSurgeon

I'm so happy you could react to it without having it spoiled for you! This episode is so good! That ending is so emotional even if most people have the twist already figured out by then!

MaxVSTheGames

lola: darlene is sunshine me in my head: elliot is midnight rain okay, i'll stop with the taylor swift references. but you put that in a plater for me. i'll also stop commenting in this post. i'm sure you all are tired of my stream of consciousness type of comments.

sand_fl

Even though I didn't think Darlene was his literal sister, I had definitely been getting more familial vibes from their relationship, though I thought it was more of a found family thing. I like the revelation about Mr. Robot/Elliot's dad - I mentioned in another comment that I hoped the reveal wouldn't be that Elliot has DID (or a "split personality" as its still sometimes called). I know someone with DID and if that had been what the show was going for it wouldn't have been a good representation of it. I didn't like the idea of Elliot being Mr. Robot, didn't think it would make sense, and this reveal works a lot better for me. Haven't seen the last few yet, but I'm exited to finish the season!

cosmotron

They both got them bug eyes, it's great

Myeh

That's hilarious. Good catch

Isaac

okey totally unrelated but is that a triple band ring i see on milena's hand? i've been wearing a triple band silver ring on my finger for like 14 years. i am not exaggerating. my grandparents gave it to me one christmas ages ago because my fathed had a gold one and i loved it and always stole his ring but it was obviously too big for me. and i can count with one hand the amount of times i've seen someone wearing one of those. i even bought one for my crush in high school becuase she always stole mine during class lol

sand_fl

oh my fucking god? i fucking knew it!!! i havent watched the discussion yet but i needed to comment this. i started suspecting she was his sister a couple episodes ago. when the whole shayla thing happened. the way she worried about him was very sibling coded to me and if the revelation hadn't happened this episode theway she acted in this one would have made my therory even more cemented. such a great episode and the way the relealed it? cheff kiss. i also have to admit that my theory also started because i kinda see physical similarities between the two actors, specially in the eyes. and we all know how casting department work. just see olivia cook and tom (i forgot his surname), alicent and aegon in hotd, they have literally the same face. i think the cast department knew very well what they were doing when they casted elliot and darlene's actors. also, props to tryell's actor, he's doing a fanstastic job. he really plays the pathetic psycopath to perfection. all in all this episode was a 10. gonna watch the discussion now.

sand_fl

BIG moment I didn't acknowledge was actually superb writing until the second or third rewatch - the reason Elliot just dove into a kiss with Darlene was because before kissing Shayla earlier in the season he asks her if he can kiss her and Shayla just jumps right in saying after the kiss "next time don't ask, it's lame." 🤩

Seems a little strange to critique a show for the direction of its storylines and characters when you haven't even watched 1/4 of the story, no? Would be like complaining about Hank in Breaking Bad season 1 or Amos in The Expanse season 1, both of which had pretty thin storylines with not much to do, or any number of shows that were written to be multiple seasons. This story was meant to be a movie before Esmail decided he needed a longer form to tell it. The story was planned from start to finish before they even started filming season 1 so I can assure you there is a clear direction.

Dante

Like a lot of shows, the end of the season is spent getting people into position for what's to come later. So if you didn't continue watching after that then the stories are obviously going to feel unfinished, because they are. Angela's story this season was definitely a bit thin, but I disagree about Tyrell completely. He is in a vastly different place by the end of the season compared to where he was at the start. Hopefully you keep watching through the rest of the show, you'll probably feel a lot different about season one as we go forward.

Rynsen

I was so hyped for their reaction to this episode. I love that they made 100 different theories but were still blindsided by the big twist. The best twists are the ones that make perfect sense when you think about them, but are still almost impossible to predict. The writers knew that everyone was waiting for the big Mr. Robot reveal, so they blew our minds with this instead. Fantastic writing.

Rynsen

The little brunette girl on the tricycle during Elliot's hallucination makes more sense now :) Also love the Tyrell talk! I believe his actor has said that he thinks the character has histrionic personality disorder, which involves excessive attention-seeking behavior and emotional theatrics. Would make a lot of sense. Show only gets more insane from here, glad you're enjoying!

Myeh

one of the things you have to understand is that the entire series was planned out from the start so things that seem like they are small are slow burns that head towards the end

MockingByrd

The Darlene sister reveal is so so good. There’s a hint to this in the episode where Elliot is “on heroine”, when he shows up outside the empty area of land where the ‘404 error’ is shown (as in memory not found error), and a little girl cycles up, that’s his sister and it’s where their house should be but he couldn’t remember. Such a great show

JATLA

I very much disagree and I think the first season gets stronger and stronger upon reflection with new information as the series goes on

autumn

Yeah the way they reveal the twist is great it's a good episode. This was definitely the peak of my interest in this season on my first watch through. However since it sounds like you've probably watched it all at this point I'll add that personally I think- -they shit the bed in the last two episodes. I've only watched Season 1, I assume that they came up with new things in the later seasons and they're good and the show was able to rebound, but I really felt after watching this season that the writer had like one central idea for the big twist and then everything around it was completely paper thin and hashed together, which is why you end up with side characters that don't really do or accomplish anything in this season with no real overarching direction or arc (Angela and Tyrell the big ones in my mind for this).. Hopefully the writer retconned that later and made them worthwhile.

LET'S GOOOOO!! :D
