One more point about this episode: Albert Blithe didn't die in 1948. That mistake happened because he never made contact with any of the other E Co guys after he was sent home from the hospital, and in a truly bizarre coincidence there was also ANOTHER Albert Blithe from the same state who served in combat in Normandy and did actually die in 1948. So his old buddies from E Co found that guy's obituary and assumed it was their Blithe that died. He actually survived and made a full recovery. He spent the rest of his life in uniform. He served in the Korean War and received a Silver Star for valor, as well as two more purple hearts for wounds received in combat. He died of a perforated ulcer in 1967 in an Army hospital in Germany. He was still on active duty in the US Army and had reached the rank of Master Sergeant.

When they all jumped into the ditch, they lost momentum. The three elements you need to be successful in combat are speed, surprise, and violence of action. In the absence of surprise, you need more of the other two. The other problem is that they had no cover in that ditch. If they'd stayed there the German machine guns could have kept them pinned, and mortars or artillery could have been brought to bear on their position as infantry flanked around to hit them from the side and mop up any of them that the artillery hadn't killed. The only way out was forward.
