The Expanse 4x05 Reaction

4:11 I'd recommend reading the books but beware that it definitely is a serious time investment, like these books are not A Song of Ice and Fire level huge, but 9 of them makes for a very considerable word count. And honestly, I feel like they could have come to a conclusion like at least one book earlier, the series did drag a bit towards the end a bit, in my opinion. But still, there's a lot of interesting stuff towards the end there and books 7, 8, 9 have a very different feel to them than the previous 6 books. I know that you've been spoiled already to the fact that there's a time jump from book 6 to book 7 so I remain hopeful that they revive the series some time in the future with all of the original cast, that would be so epic, to revive a series and actually having the actors appropriately aged up.

Christophe Schannes

First of all i am not 100% certain what is true for the show, as my knowledge of the storyline is often blended with the storyline of the books. In the books, it is clear that the legal charter was drawn before the belters actually landed on Illus. So there's that. I'm not sure what is the case in the show, to tell you the truth. I just always felt as that was also the case for the show. Now to the more pertinent question of why does "Inner's law" apply to Belters, it is certainly a complex situation, and certainly not an ethical one. However the alliance of the Inner planets have control of the ring and are allowing the OPA to play the key role of patrolling and safeguarding the ring. Therefore the OPA is indirectly accepting the control of the Inner planets over the ring. Now these Belters “jumped the line” and violated that control, and therefore are considered illegal by the Inner planets and OPA. It's just that the OPA wants the refugees to be treated fairly in this and the UN doesn't want another scandal of Belter victims. That is why in the books it is clearly mentioned that Fred Johnson (who is the defacto leader of the military arm of the OPA in the books) in agreement with Avasarala decide to send Holden as a fair and impartial mediator (having worked with both sides in the past) between the RCE and the Belters. It's just that by the time Holden gets there, the Belters (well... the few that are OPA on Illus) have already pushed Murtry too far.

Also, consider these belters were refugees from Ganymede, which had been destroyed as a result of the Inner's war. They had been denied refuge by both Earth and Mars. They had been waiting at the ring gates and were running out of supplies. They had nowhere to go for supplies and nothing to trade for supplies, since the Inners had destroyed their livelihood. "Law" is not an innate all-controlling thing. It is a constructed idea, created by governments, and applying to "the area under their control". It is accepted by individuals in that area on the assumption that following the law will keep them in favor of the government and make life easier in that area. There's absolutely nothing to make the ring systems the inners area, and they had been prepared for the belters they had displaced to starve at the gates. Or maybe they just didn't care. Either way, I see no reason for the Inners law to apply to the belters.

Kevin McDonough

"Technically" and "Legally" only apply from the Earth/Mars perspective. The Belt, was notably not a part of this charter. What specifically gives them legal reign over the belters in these new systems no ones seen before? Perhaps there's more info in the book, but in the show my sense is the charter was created AFTER it was learned the belters had colonized this planet. Given the political context, it would surprise me if they were creating charters at the time the belters rushed through the ring. And notably, there isn't a security team or research team or Rocinante being sent to any of the thousands of other systems. All this to say, I see why Earth considers the Illos settlement illegal but, so far form Earth's civilization, I don't see why the law has any meaning.

Kevin McDonough

And to answer your question, yes we do listen to the end :-)

AlexBoss

I know it's been said before, but because you keep asking, "technically" the UN government has given the RCE a legal charter for the exploration of this planet. The Belters let's say, jumped the "border" "illegally" and got there first. Ethically of course the Belters have a lot on their side, but "tecnically" and "legally" they are not supposed to be there and that gives Murtry this air of superiority and feeling that he is on the right side of this argument. Also i don't believe that it is a spoiler to say now, but in the books, Murtry actually was on the spaceship when the belters blew up the small shuttle, and he reacted much more calmly as he sent his second in command down with orders to calm things down. The Belters (the few OPA) then killed his scond in command and 4 more of his people and that led to Murtry getting down to the planet and enforcing Martial law. Of course he enjoyed it and is a piece of shit, but in the books, the escalation is a bit more subtle. Anyway, once more great reaction girls.

I love the ideological conflict between Gao and Avasarala. Both of them have really strong cases, but theyre focused in on totally different parts of the problem. Chrisjen has the best argument from the vantage point of a show watcher. Opportunities don't mean much when they result in the end of our species. But its so easy to see how earthers who don't really understand the danger would see a stuffy old guard politician trying to keep them away from the first real solution to earth's overpopulation.

okar

I listen until the end, I'm just too lazy to comment ;)

120 years is actually the average.

Always one of the 50 here! I know I've talked a lot about the legal aspect of RCE vs the Belter refugees (mostly in the context of Murtry), but it's also worth noting that for right now, the Belter refugees just want the money from selling Lithium just so they can get a lawyer to go fight for them in court. The refugees had waited forever while no port would take them. All these decisions are being made back on courts on Earth, Luna, and Mars, and nobody is advocating for the forgotten communities. Fred Johnson had to steal missiles to even get the chance to negotiate politically with the Inners. The Belters know that even if they got resettled somewhere else, they'd probably just get put on some shitty planet nobody wants. Someone has to advocate for their squatter's rights.

One of the 50 checking in! Also fingers crossed you return to Station 11 I promise it’s a hopeful show ultimately!

Luis

I hope you consider reacting to Stranger Things after the Expanse is finished :) I think you would enjoy it a lot!

I prefer the original Arjun more as well. I feel like Crisjen would match better with someone who's softer. The new Arjun feels like he'd clash too often with her.

Camzeee

I love Brian George and I prefer him as Arjun, but in fairness, Michael Benyaer has much more time onscreen to actually interact with Shohreh Agdashloo (and the characters have reason to be in conflict with each other, rather than Arjun just playing the straight supportive wifeguy).

Joe Tucker

It's surprising to me that Milena finds the new Arjun to have better chemistry with Chrisjen. Most people feel the opposite. To me, old Arjun was a better match for Chrisjen, a gentler soul to her strong character in the show. The new actor just seems off to me, coming in a bit too strong and clashy, but at the same time, not quite convincing in the acting. No hate here- he is ok, but unfortunately he sticks out to me, in a cast with such amazing acting.

Aldo Cassola

I watch all of these to the very end, keep talking.

Ken Hendel

Josh, Marcus and Nadia. Love it! Edit: Yup, we're all there still watching at the end too.

We don't know if the last 3 books will be adapted for TV but we can all hope so! Inners live up to 120 years I believe (there are anti aging drugs that are used). Belters have a shorter life span because of their deprivation, stress and of course living in space. As a physician I really enjoyed the scene of saving Lucia and the use of the autodoc and the equipment. I hope physicians are not completely obsolete in the future but the books are pretty hilarious talking about the autodocs as they beep hopefully trying to get the human's attention sometimes! Chrisjen's opponent is Nancy Gao.

FYI; The Expanse novels were written by Daniel Abraham and Ty Frank who co-authored under the pen name of “James S.A. Corey.” They served as producers of the show and sat in the writers’ room, even writing scripts for some of the episodes themselves.

T. Arnold Ferguson

Alex isn't a doctor/ medic, but remember they use "auto-docs". So the equipment does most of the work for them. That's why we often see the characters just put their arm in it, and more or less know at least what to do.

Varun Laks

There's two writers for the books, Ty Franck and Daniel Abraham. They write under one name, James S. A. Corey. They also write for the show. They wrote this episode, in fact!
