that OVA is so different from the real show that it almost looks like a horny fanfic. Please do not judge the series based on the OVA. I won't say that Kaguya has zero fanservice, but it's close to zero. And I guarantee the female characters are just as well written as the male ones.

If they will ever watch TPN, then only the very good first season. The second season was just unbearable. As if after Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone they decided to tell the 6 other books in one movie and cut out everything about Voldemort and Dumbledore and keep the age of the characters fixed at 12.

2022-08-15 16:54:37 +0000 UTC
Good to know. And you're right about the canon and non-canon, of course, but if an OVA looks like that, the regular show must be at least somewhat similar, or so I think.
Robert H.

the OVA is nothing like the anime, you can watch it without fear, you don't judge the canon for what is not canon.

I haven't watched it yet. But the thing is, I always do a "fanservice check" before I watch an anime (I sort of watch a few scenes on YouTube to make sure I don't get upset the whole time about how women are portrayed in the story), and when I saw a scene from the OVA (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJwQpgTgnr4), I pushed the anime very far down on my watch list.

The show I think you'd like the most and has a great focus on character development would be Haikyuu.
Vinland Saga is probably the next best thing for you guys to watch as well, some amazing character development in that. And the historic aspect of it is nice.
HunterXHunter I love and I can see you guys loving, but the two I mentioned before are shorter but very dense.
I would suggest Vinland Saga first as the new season is going to be coming out in a few months. Haikyuu will be having having 2 movies come out next year.

That said, here are my rec's for a short anime if not Berserk: Cowboy Bebop, or Violet Evergarden. Bebop gives you the found family stuff y'all love so much plus it's a big stylistic shift from the 2010's anime you guys are used to. Violet Evergarden is very emotionally poignant and will force tears from you almost every episode, but it's also such a sweet and hopeful show even with all the tears. Plus it has the added benefit of being absolutely stunningly beautiful to look at. Can't go wrong with either of these shows IMO but I don't think Bebop get's enough love so I really want to emphasize that one for yall.

people are recommending Berserk and while it's one of my favorite stories of all time, I think watching the anime instead of reading the Manga is a huge disservice to your experience. The anime is fantastic, but it was so much more meaningful to me after reading the manga. This is because of how much context the anime is forced to cut due to censorship. A lot of things that are explicitly shown in the manga are merely implied in the anime. Sometimes that's a good thing (one specific character comes to mind that I'm very glad was cut), but for the most part I found the anime to be so much more impactful to me going into it having read the golden age arc in the manga. But if you ladies watch it, you'll fall in love. It has everything you could want: found families, tragedy, romance, and incredible incredible characters with beautiful flaws and strengths. Just an absolutely wonderful story.

2022-08-14 18:33:48 +0000 UTC
I'm afraid you're spot on, it doesn't get better from here. If you want to feel like you've watched the whole show I'd perhaps recommend finishing season 1, but if you want to drop it now I don't blame you. It's a show a LOT of people including myself watched when they were a lot younger, so I imagine that has a lot to do with why so many people speak of it so highly. But I'd say the biggest draw is the power fantasy aspect of imagining yourself as the MC, which for younger people is a big draw. But for those looking for top notch writing and character development it falls flat imo
Kya Colosseum
2022-08-14 18:30:15 +0000 UTC
OK I'm about 15 episodes into Code Geass and I'm just... not really impressed? I don't want to drop it because I personally think its stupid to judge something after 15 episodes but IDK, I'm not really liking the way the themes are presented, and i really didn't enjoy how everything was handled with Shirley and that whole mini arc. Does it get better from there or is it a "if you didn't like the beginning you're not gonna like the rest of it" kind of situation? There are definitely aspects of it that I like but it really is not on the level of AoT or Fmab so far, and not even close to Monster or Berserk in terms of writing, character work, or themes. I will keep watching because I don't believe in judging things this early, but while it has some very cool elements, I'm just a little disappointed so far.

@Kya Colosseum Since it has been recommended to them so often lately, I had started a rewatch and I couldn't agree more. Great show. It's sort of the child of Attack on Titan and Death Note, but just took way too much from Misa Amane. There really are way too many scenes where women or high school students are reduced to her body. It feels like only the female characters are showering and that every episode. I especially hate the shots when female characters are in their "titans" (https://www.kapwing.com/videos/62f9295f180e8900d7e28a03). Code Geass is one of those anime that I wish would get a remake in a few years that cuts out such elements. They really add zero to the main story.

You have to watch the movies first. Here is the order:
Psycho-Pass (2012)
Psycho-Pass 2 (2014)
Psycho-Pass Movie (2015)
Psycho-Pass Sinners of the System Case 1: Tsumi to Bachi (2019)
Psycho-Pass Sinners of the System Case 2: First Guardian (2019)
Psycho-Pass Sinners of the System Case 3: Onshuu no Kanatai ni (2019)
Psycho-Pass 3 (2019)
Psycho-Pass 3: First Inspector (2020)
In my opinion, the movies and season 3 are better than season 2, but nothing comes close to the first season. The villain and chemistry with Kougami was just too good.

Psycho Pass season 1 is really good. In addition, Psycho Pass also has the advantage that you can just stop after each season and movie. The story always ends a bit open, which means there is no real ending. In my opinion, the crime cases at the start can be problematic. It heavily thematizes Japanese work culture, gaming culture, cosplay culture and more, which sometimes seems a bit strange, since you're not so familiar with it in the rest of the world or in Europe.
Robert H.

Maybe check out Psycho Pass Season 1, even if it's on your own time, it's a great sci-fi that is worth a watch. Also, Hyouka is pretty easy going, but has some nice character stories wrapped up in a mystery/slice of life type mix.

To clear something up, the "Master" of slave 23 was an alchemist and he did some weird alchemy stuff using his slaves blood and that created the dwarf in the flask. So "Father" was created using Hohenheims blood by that alchemist guy. ALSO, our boys were born from a philosophers stone: clearly destined for greatness/their own tv show.

since everyone is posting their recommendations again i'm not sure if you'll see this but i guess i'll give it a shot
the show has 64 episodes
yeah, that was not pride, i always think about him as the dwarf in the flask, but i guess that after 40 episodes of calling him father it will be difficult to call him by other name
and lastly hohenheim isn't the one that 'gave' him the blood. i mean, yes, it was his blood, but the one that did the "experiment" or whatever was his master (as in the alchemist who owned him) that later also became his master in terms of teaching.
so while it was born from hohenheim's blood, he was not responsible for his creation per se.
i have to say that thanks to your reactions i've also watched a couple of shows i really like that i wouldn't have watched if it wasn't for you. the expanse, for example. and i wasn't planning to watch the new GOT show because the original disappointed me to no end but i guess i'll have to make the effort 😂

Hisoka is one of the main protagonists and he's an allegory of the devil. He reflects back whatever it is others fear/hate/love most in order to snare them into his trap. Only one character saw him as a pedo thus Hisoka only behaved like a pedo in his presence. The idea of the character is to illicit a strong response whether good or bad.

I would so be in favor of Spy x Family, not only because it's just so damn good, but also because it gets away from the typical shonen action anime. Rainbow Nisha, Haikyuu, Violet Evergarden, Zankyou No Terror and Odd Taxi would also be good shows for them.

Dwarf in the flask is not pride, they are father. Pride is the FIRST homunculous MADE by father.
I wish the subtitles were a bit less spoilers, Selim was revealed to early in the shadows when he was confronting Riza, the subtitles said [Hoenheim] instead of slave 23, but everything cant be perfect.
