The Expanse 5x08 Reaction

The Expanse 5x08 Reaction

Do review of books 7, 8 & 9. The novella memory legions have all short stories of the Expanse. The chances of additional tv series or movies it not coming anytime soon. Maybe in five years.

Metro498

How about Bebop Cowboy on Netflix

Metro498

12 Monkeys is absolutely one of the best shows. It all feels planned out and has such a satisfyingly perfect finale, something that most shows don't nail. It's another show, like The Expanse, that is usually looked past because of it being on SyFy originally. My vote is still for Mr. Robot but 12 Monkeys would be great too!

DaftBasterd

Black Sails is one of the best shows (if not the best) I have ever seen. The writing is just on another level. It's a shame that apparently so few people have seen it. Literally almost any character is top tier. It takes a few episodes to get into it, but it's so worth it.

Namikaza

There's a reason reactors don't do certain shows. Certain distributors (NBC Universal in particular) are very unfriendly toward reactors. That rules out many good shows, including Mr. Robot.

Christopher Alexander

No go on BSG: NBC Universal is not friendly to reactors.

Christopher Alexander

Last Kingdom or Band of Brothers!

VProductions

Oh, and regards the new shows. As i said before i believe that you will love The Last Kingdom. It's exactly up your alley and it is one of my top 10 favorite shows. But i also wouldn't give up on Black Sails. I know the scene Milena is referencing and i can definitely say, that that is not the standard for this show. Also when i first started watching Black Sails i wasn't at all impressed and i probably would have stopped watching during episodes 1-4, if i didn't already have in my mind the RINGING endorsement from my best friend who had already watched the whole of it. So i kept at it and was rewarded with one of my favorite shows ever. Also one of my top 10.

AlexBoss

I believe that this episode was a bit much. I agree with you, that it felt that we were just watching Naomi get tortured. But it's the same in the books, so i guess that the creators here did a good job of portraying this. I also agree with Milena, that my favorite part of Season 5 (apart from the magnificent episode 4) has been the Amos and Clarissa storyline. They have become in Season 5 my favorite duo by far.

AlexBoss

How about Battlestar Galactica? Or Orphan Black? I think you said that you saw Battlestar already but I can't remember...

Gamut

Random shows suggestions to try off the top of my head: The Magicians, People of Earth, The Wire, Cobra Kai (unless you aren't familiar with 80s movies), Halt and Catch Fire, Severance, Squid Game, Our Flag Means Death, Station Eleven. Either Mr Robot or Black Sails would be ok, but if the mood isn't landing, might not be right. Black Sails took me a full season to start to like, but there's a lot of, "we need constantly remind audience this isn't cable TV with extreme violence/sex" and while the show does move past that somewhat it never entirely goes away.

JF

ye just saw she called him 11 so that's out the window too ;_;

Gucci Pucci

One of the most honest displays of persistence in the face of pain. I once followed a guy up a big wall that wasn't going so well. We (ok, I) had dropped half our water, and we were behind & conserving food. He was cramping from dehydration, foggy from hunger and took a fall. It mangled a finger gashed him all over and he lost a lot of blood. As he hung there, you could see the pain, fear and anger in his eyes as he screamed in frustration. But just as suddenly it faded to dead focus as he taped himself up, arranged his gear & started climbing. Just as many words were spoken. As I wondered what we'd do, half way up a wall, with no service & no good way down, he knew the only way was up. He knew this section was beyond my skills & waiting wouldn't help. To this day I stand in curious awe. I cannot begin to imagine what goes through his or Naomi's head, but I can say it looked just like that. I got massive chills watching this episode.

Kevin McDonough

I would liken Mr. Robot to the Leftovers in style quite a bit.

Brendan

And Lola’s already seen Dr Who judging by her reaction to Matt Smith in HOTD

Wanda Did Nothing Wrong

Ok thx didn’t know

Gucci Pucci

Personally I'd say that Black Sails is not for everyone. As is probably every other show out there. I got to the beginning of season 2 and still couldn't get into it until I finally gave up. But I know people who absolutely love it, so you never know ;) But I mostly wanted to comment because YES to 12 MONKEYS! It's such a great show, but no one seems to know about it. So thank you for the reminder!

Marvelous JJ

The Last Kingdom would be fantastic for you to react to.

EmwunGarand

I did not know that actually. That's good to know!

Varun Laks

You might already know but in case you don't - Jimmy Macram has reacted to it, and he's almost finished! (not sure if mentioning another reactor is ok so feel free to remove this comment, LM)

AS

I'll just say, Mr. Robot is my favorite show and really tugs my heartstrings in a way few shows managed to do. The building up to the last season was incredible in storytelling and made me feel for the characters just like The Expanse and other character driven shows do. Hope you end up giving it a shot

Teddy S

Yeah it's too bad that no one has ever really reacted to Justified. I've gotten enough people into the show, to know that the (in-person) reactions people have to certain moments can be amazing. I'm not sure if Justified is their kind of show exactly, but it would be great to see someone out there react to the original series. Especially with the sequel series coming out soon.

Varun Laks

between the "i know i said we wouldn't ship them but...", the "now all i think about is their children" and the "everyone loves clapping here" this was a funnier reaction than i was expecting given the episode

sand_fl

ok, tbh i do not remember what's that scene of black sails (probably something related to max?) but i have to say black sails ia one of the best shows i've ever watched, so i hope you give it another chance. the writing in that show is incredible. mr robot... i watched a whole season and it was ok but not enough to keep my interest. if you end up watching it i guess i'll have to give it another shot. i haven't watched the wire or the kast kingdom so no opinion there. have you watched the americans? i follow you on tv time but i don't remember if you've watched it. two of my favourite shows are buffy the vampire slayer (oldie but amazing imo) and dexter. not many reactors have considered them so it would be amazing if you did. another of my favourite is person of interest, though i admit the first 2 seasons are not really that fit for reacting. but if you have the time i would recommend it because the last 3 seasons are just incredible. i know you want to replace the expanse with another long show, but i think there's many shows with less than 20 episodes that could be great for replacing it too. since you love sk shows i think you could react to kingdom, it's an amazing show about zombies. and you know my opinion on midnight mass... it's a must and i would really love if you reacted to it. only 7 episodes.

sand_fl

that's amazing robert, i always find you comments really interesting to read and learn things i didn't know, so thanks for all the info:)

sand_fl

I loooove and recommend Justified - the first season is a bit procedural but after that it comes into its own. Great writing, acting, characters, twists. Harlots was a good watch as well. But there aren't a lot of reactions to these, so I understand if you're not interested.

AS

There is a reason Band Of Brothers has been in the top 1-3 rated on IMDb for a long long time. It's the pinnacle of television. Plus not too much of a commitment being just 10 episodes.

PongPong31

I get Milena hating the early Max storyline in black sails, but you guys should give it a go. Max has such a good story arc. Everyone does. Black Sails is legit a perfectly written and acted show. The Wire, you would fall in love with so many best bois, you would also hate and get frustrated with so many people. It would be so much fun to watch. My other suggestion that I’ve never seen anyone else put out there is 12 Monkeys. It’s a time travel show, that I personally enjoyed more than Dark. The characters are so much more enjoyable to watch. And when the season 2 storyline kicks in, things get really wild.

Wanda Did Nothing Wrong

I felt so awful for Drummer. She's really in a horrible position right now.

Deana DeWall

Yes, Mr. Robot is a great pick, plus I've never seen any reactors do it. I'm tired of reactors doing the same shows.

Deana DeWall

I agree with everyone above about Mr. Robot. It's a work of art, especially later seasons whilst, similarly to The Expanse, getting better with each season! It's a superbly written, wonderfully acted, beautifully shot roller coaster of emotions and mystery which I think is perfect for the both of you! It's truly an underrated and underappreciated masterpiece of television.

DaftBasterd

100% those. Last Kingdom would be perfect for them.

Grst

Not only was Dominique Tipper acting the entire episode by herself, she also barely had any dialogue. She had to sell the entirety of the drama purely on physicality and emotional acting. It's an amazing performance.

Berezant

In defense of The Wire as a reaction show: The Expanse reminds me A LOT of The Wire. I've heard several people call The Expanse "Game of Thrones in space", but I think that's superficial. The Expanse is "The Wire in space". The Wire starts small and focuses on crime, but expands with each season (while mostly keeping the same characters) and you learn more and more about how everything that's wrong with American cities connects to everything else. The Expanse resonated with me because it did the same with its world and showed how the politics and economics and social structure of Earth, Mars, and the Belt drive everything. Everything is connected. "All the pieces matter." The Wire is the kind of show that will have you doing really long discussions just like The Expanse (and BB and BCS and AoT). That said, it's also depressing, because it's pretty realistic, and even 14 years after the last episode aired, so little has changed. You'll get frustrated with the characters you follow. You'll get even more frustrated with people in positions of power than you do in The Expanse. The characters who have no control will break your heart. There's a whole season covering education where you get to follow kids around. You love kids! I personally think it would be a great show for you two to watch for all those reasons, but you also deserve to watch something fun after torturing yourselves with all these heavy shows.

jveezy

Charles is probably dead.

Nonman

I think they watched dark and they only replace anime with anime slots.

Awed

They have already reacted to arcane

Frederik Viberg Vorhaug

Many of us believe Dominique Tipper should have won all the awards for her work as Naomi in this episode. By the way if you want to feel stress and tension for about 5 seasons of television I recommend the HBO show 'OZ'. It is a prison show set in the US and has an unbelievable cast.

FatPaddySlim

I’d recommend Peaky Blinders, Doctor Who (2005 onwards) or Hannibal for longer shows. For Animes maybe Psychopass, HxH or JoJo once you’re done with Mob?

Gucci Pucci

It's an absolute crime Dominique Tipper didn't even get an Emmy nomination for this season. I demand an investigation!

Ken Hendel

I got cut off: Also the ship has no environmental controls so it is very hot which is why she keeps taking off the vac suit each time. She is swollen from the decompression, and dehydrated. She is really suffering which is why you feel so badly yourselves. You are meant to feel a tiny fraction of what she is feeling and going through. She was trying to find the correct wires to interrupt the message and alter it as you heard at the end. She was also keeping track of her oxygen use with each sortie into the airless space between the hulls in order to not run out of oxygen. Dom Tipper was acting all alone during this episode and it is simply amazing how she can elicit the fear and sadness and empathy by her performance. Many of us wish she had been recognized for this season's performance. Consider watching the credits for some of these episodes (and next season as well) as there are actually things to hear and see sometimes!

DrEEsky

In addition to all that, it is not clearly explained in the show but the Chetzamoka is burning at about 2G which is really tough on the Belter physique (we already know how Naomi did on a planet with higher gravity!).

DrEEsky

Mr Robot is marvelous

Isaac

Last Kingdom, Mr. Robot, Outlander

John West

I second Mr. Robot! 4 seasons, around 10 episodes each so not terribly long. Amazing characters, story, and performances. Would lead to great discussions every episode.

Epsilox

Mr robot!!!

Alex Mills

I suggest Mr Robot after finishing the expanse, great story, good cinematography, talented actors

Eren Yeager

Last kingdom all the way!

Lachlan Smith

You should consider Black Sails or The Last Kingdom next! I think you'd both enjoy either of them.

Tyler Winn

as if i didn't think she was suffering enough...

I am a physicist, my girlfriend is also a physicist but works in biotechnology and my flatmate is a medical student. So there is a lot of basic knowledge there. Nevertheless, these are of course things that you have to google again. For example, I didn't remember the English name of the disease. And the explanation of the disease is simply copied from Wikipedia. Why bother to formulate it in your own words when it's already well summarised on Wikipedia. :D But the closer something is to physics, the more I actually know off the top of my head. For example, in my last comment under 5x07, I only had to look up the time data for how long a person remains conscious without oxygen.

Robert H.

hey man, do you know all this things or you just research after watching a show or movie? because you always leave the most interesting facts in the comments

sand_fl

In case you're wondering what Naomi is suffering from now: Decompression sickness. It is caused by dissolved gases emerging from solution as bubbles inside the body tissues during decompression. DCS most commonly occurs during or soon after a decompression ascent from underwater diving, but can also result from other causes of depressurisation, such as emerging from a caisson, decompression from saturation and flying in an aircraft without depressurisation at high altitude. You can read about the symptoms on Wikipedia. It is a very painful affair.

Robert H.

Well game of thrones and lord of the rings are just 1 season each so maybe band of brothers after those?
