He absolutely could have said no if he really wanted to. He took vows to protect the princess, not blindly obey her. And there’s no way she could have ever taken his refusal and used it against him. Because doing that would have implicated herself in trying to seduce him. There’s also the fact that he’s been her sworn shield for the past 4 years. So they are at the very least friends. If he’d have said no, and meant it, of course she wouldn’t have done anything to him.

2022-09-14 23:06:35 +0000 UTCSer Criston Cole's mixed feelings and hesitation may have had to do with his vows as Kingsguard. The Kingsguard are forbidden to marry, father children, and to hold land. Swearing to father no children means to swear celibacy/chastity. While in the Kingswood with Rhaenyra, he shares that being named Kingsguard was the greatest honor his family has ever known. Breaking a vow means lessening that honor. I believe he is thinking this over when he sets his white cloak down. By the time they are taking their boots off, you tell by the smile on his face that he has made up his mind. But who knows how much guilt he feels after, he's not really in a position to express it is he.
