2023-04-20 12:07:46 +0000 UTCI can't say much that hasn't already been said, but as weird as it sounds I'm glad the ending seemed to hit the emotions for you- it definitely did for me. This isn't just my favorite show but is one of the few stories of any medium that really got under my skin and impacted me on a deep emotional level. Funnily enough, HxH is one of the other few stories that have really hit me like this (though obviously in different ways and with a vastly different style), so needless to say I'm really excited to see how that story ultimately goes for you both as well. But yeah thanks for sharing this! Excited for the review video.

So all that 'progress' wasn't for nothing and Elliot can begin to move forward with Darlene, maybe with Dom when she gets back, in a world that is still bad but better cuz it doesn't have the Deus Group in it.

There, the Mastermind starts crying after the projector turns on because what the projector was showing were the memories that were created since Fsociety was formed. So the Mastermind felt sad of what he has caused (Fsociety members death, thousands of lives were lost, and Angela's death), and all these memories are being transfered to the real Elliot while the camera is slowly going into the projector's light. Moving on, the real Elliot is finally back, and we see his eye full of tear, because he got these memories from the Mastermind and realized that his love, Angela, is dead. But that's not just a sad tear, it's also a happy tear because at least his sister Darlene is sill alive and besides him, so he won't feel alone anymore in this world." - TheThunder20 from reddit.

2023-04-19 20:26:44 +0000 UTC@Isaac you know that meme from community that goes like "i can excuse racisim but i draw the line at animal cruelty". well, that was him (i know people call him mastermind but it'll take a while before i stop thinking of him as elliot so let's just go with "him" for now. he was like "i can excuse choking someone and stealing his life but i draw the line at hurting darlene". siblings connection always make me emotional. that's why some (most) of my favourite shows have a sibling relationship as a big part of the plot. he loved darlene so much that he was willing to give up control and made sure to let darlene know that he loved her before doing it 😭😭😭😭

THANK YOU for taking the time to watch all of it and ALSO to pace yourselves to let things really sink in. It was an absolute blast to rewatch it with the two of you and while I certainly cried at the critical moments while it aired it was somehow more impactful this time alongside the two of you. Again thank you so much for watching without a doubt my absolute favorite show of all time, and I think a lot of us really felt the sting of "this only works if you let go too" 😅😅 NO MM I DON'T WANNA YOU CAN'T MAKE ME! 😭😭 nor will he! 2023-04-19 16:42:28 +0000 UTCwell, i just finished the episode and let me tell you something. i am not okay. i cried for like the last 20 minutes of the episode and the parts with darlene hit me like a punch. i've said this a few times but my sister is the person i love the most in this world and she's my rock, so it always bugged me that darlene was never part of the picture in his family and now even more when i saw she was not part of his "ideal world" so imagine my surpise when they reveal it's because elliot's connection with her is so strong that it was the best way to trap elliot in that mental prison. the fact that darlene's face is the last shot of the show made me sob ngl. okay, let me tell you something. if i weren't watching this alongside you my mind would have done backflips watching the last bunch of episodes because believe me when i tell you i would never have figured out the plott of our elliot being "just" another personality. i would have been so lost watching this it wouldn't even be funny. so i thank you for your intelligence lol it was nice seeing dom one last time and angela too, i miss her :( but i agree with milena, it's funny to see lola's reaction every time angela was onscreen. this show was such a delight and i will probably rewatch it soon when i have some time. it'´ll be weird af to watch it without you two on the corner of my screen ngl. also, the last part with the light and all the images reminded me to fmab when ed and al saw the truth and all the images. that was nice. well, now i only need to watch like 10 of your hxh reactions to catch up with your videos. this was a great way to watch a show. i'll do it with the wire too since i haven't watched it either, but sadly i know a bunch of spoilers from that show due to watching many top 10 mojo videos with my roommates in college. fingers crossed black sails finally comes after the wire.

The first time I saw this final episode, the final shot in fact, made her my favorite character which I didn't expect at all. I love that it ends on her and that all we see of the original Elliot is his eye and then his perspective. The different alters at the movie theatre and all the memories throughout the course of the show, in that tunnel of light, implies to me that there was some form of integration for Elliot in the end. That he didn't wake up completely scared, confused, and with everything on his conscience -- he now has all of the different parts of him working together to carry the burden and his sister who will finally be there for him for real.

2023-04-19 09:10:47 +0000 UTCUSA Network doesn't have an international presence. Not sure when it was added to Hulu but even then Netflix was king at the time. It was simply a logistics issue. That being said, I still feel the marketing within the US was a bit lackluster (then again, USA Network wasn't and probably still isn't one of the more popular TV networks). Can't even remember how it was that I got into this show (a Twitter ad possibly? Awards campaign?). I feel like there's a current similar situation with a show called Yellowjackets on Showtime. Impossible to tell how impactful future seasons will be but I have watched the first season and it's got quality to it. It resembles Mr. Robot a bit in in the sense that it's falling under a lot of people's radars yet it's having an admirable degree of success for a series on such a relatively unpopular network.

2023-04-19 08:00:17 +0000 UTCthe conclusion is what ill remember most. the mastermind’s crisis of identity and later acceptance that he’s just a part of something bigger is so great. also the fact that he relinquishes control because he wanted darlene to have her real brother back is so beautiful and selfless. both of their characters were my fav of the show so to end on the love they have for each other is perfect. the general message of the show being “the world is cruel but we find solace in our relationships with our loved ones” just hits home for me

Basically from when Elliot/MM gets "shot" in the crackhouse and the tv turns on, from there to when he wakes up. The cool thing about it is it's sorta split into sections that tell the whole story of the show, the family/memory stuff in S1, the Tyrell/prison stuff in S2, the Angela stuff in S3 and finally the Elliot stuff in S4. Another thing I'd like to see is a ranking of the top 4? I mean I'd love to hear thoughts on other characters you really like such as Tyrell, Price and Irving but I feel like your top four will definitely be the same just in a different order so I'd love to know. Aand now I'll watch the reaction, those were just thoughts I had initially, maybe you covered both in the discussion hahaha

It’s about overcoming pain, dealing with life’s traumas. It is about the value of friendship and family, about the intrinsic goodness of human beings. It is about the importance of small things, about fear, loneliness, anger. The options that life gives you. About good and evil. About what makes one self... anyway, I could continue and not stop. It is a perfect conclusion to a beautiful and touching story that becomes a part of your life. Even though it's only 45 episodes long, the show covers a myriad of topics that are all explored beautifully. Other than entertaining you it teaches you a lot about life and how people deal with it, and what people are capable to achieve their goals and desires. I could write a novel about why I consider it the best TV show ever made. There is so much to talk about... As a lot of other people mentioned, this show has a ridiculously high rewatch value. In fact, it is a completely different experience on rewatch that makes you appreciate it even more.

Imo the run of 4x7 through 4x13 is the best run of episodes on tv, and the finale is my favorite episode of anything. There are so many lines throughout the show that hit differently, and so many scenes that could have multiple meanings, it's really impressive. You can really tell how confident Esmail was in where he wanted the show to go.

2023-04-19 02:15:39 +0000 UTCThe downside of the marketing team for Mr. Robot is that they do this show a massive disservice by not giving this show the proper advertising / marketing it deserves. For example outside the US, every trailer for Mr. Robot was removed from YouTube or is forced into a "fan creation" version of a trailer. I'm not sure if YouTube keeps it for the US audience, but outside US audience it's inaccessible. I also never saw any real advertising for this series during it's release, I don't understand why either. This show is such a fucking gem, this show deserved some real marketing behind it / less aggressive copyright shutdowns of fan-made pages / channels etc.

It's going to be difficult to make any presentation in a fictional setting that is representative of a condition where research is inconclusive. I would hope that people encountering persons with DID would engage with them as an individual rather than leaning on media.

It's not something you explicitly mentioned but I think it's worth saying textually that Whiterose's trans and queer identity is core to the choices she makes throughout the show, especially at the end - and in a dark sort of way, she died on her own terms, by her own hand, looking how she wanted to look in a room she built herself, giving a comrade she respected a level of control she feels she wasn't afforded. A very complicated but compelling and viscerally queer, trans character.

2023-04-19 01:32:36 +0000 UTCThis show was really good, though I do still feel somewhat iffy about some of the ways DID is portrayed/talked about. For one thing, it was pretty common for alters (please others in the comments stop calling them personalities, that is not the proper term and hasn't been for a while) to serve as antagonists in this show. And even though it comes around on showing Mr. Robot as being there for the sake of Elliot’s protection, consistently having him come off as more violent is still a bit…unfortunate I guess. In a vacuum it’s one thing, but people with DID are constantly portrayed in fiction as having “evil” or “more violent” sides that “take over” and it’s led to a lot of bad stigma against them. Lastly…the idea that there is only one “true” Elliot, and the other alters should cede permanent control over to him. It reminds me of the once prominent practice of having DID alters ‘merge’ and that being seen as the healthy ‘solution’. Now it’s not viewed that way at all. All the alters are a true part of the system. Sometimes there is a ‘core’, but not always. And often that core will not be ‘forward’, and that is completely okay. I’m not saying this is terribly done, and research on DID has gone through a lot of changes, even I’m sure since the series came out. But I did still want to comment on parts of it feeling off. That’s kinda the danger of using things like DID in fictional settings. You need there to be drama and mystery, there needs to be antagonism. But in the real world when there are already soooo many misconceptions about how DID works, even stuff that is generally well done can still fall into some potentially problematic stuff. That’s all I’ll say on that aspect though - I’ll do another comment about the rest.

For instance: Season 2 is usually regarded as the weakest season by many people but on a second rewatch this season really breaths a new life because you fully understand whats going on. A good example of this is also S01E04, it has the lowest rating of that season and knowing how this show ends, I'm sure returning to that episode will have a lot going for you. I also knew that Lola was gonna have a breakdown on this finale during M83's Outro, given that she said on S03 finale she loved them.

As Elliot's manifestation of rage, it's clear that he is born during that weekend where Elliot was locked in the server room and blacked out. After he gets the 5/9 idea from his Halloween scene with Darlene(S2E4), he seems to assume more and more control, eventually getting in contact with Whiterose. This lines up with Whiterose's comment about Mastermind in the Season 3 opening scene: "We may possess the necessary tools, but what we do not have is his unadulterated, focused rage" As Mastermind continued to progress the 5/9 plan, he took to targetting evil where he could find it and in order to trap real Elliot, made himself forget anything that was truly grounding himself to reality(chief of which being Darlene). At this point, Mr. Robot steps in and S1E1 begins.

2023-04-18 23:52:47 +0000 UTCVery interested in their thoughts on Whiterose in the full review, but I’m leaving this comment for anybody else who might have issues with her arc and is interested in hearing the perspective of someone who likes it. Going to be a bit long so I apologize in advance lol. Whiterose’s machine was a coping mechanism for her trauma and was her way of escaping reality like DID and fsociety were for Elliot. This show was always about trauma and coping mechanisms. Whiterose experienced the trauma of losing her lover due to her environment. As a result, she hates her environment and seeks to find a different one. Elliot constructed an internal mental coping mechanism to assume control in the real world as a result of the lack of control he had as a child. Whiterose constructed an external physical coping mechanism that could “solve” her problem and let her escape. Elliot hacks people, Whiterose hacks time. Both characters have trauma they are inadequately equipped to deal with. Their coping mechanisms are flawed and self-destructive, which is common in people with severe trauma and mental illness. Whiterose was very good at weaponizing other people’s trauma against them. By the time she got to Angela, Angela was already feeling lost and desperate. Imagine that the world’s most powerful person comes to you at one of your lowest points, keeps you alive when they could (and probably should) kill you, then tells you about their plan, how it’s backed by science and they’ve been working on it for 30 years with world-class engineers. It might not work on the audience, because we know who Whiterose really is. But this is exactly how cult leaders gain their following, and Angela is the exact type of person they target. Remember what Krista said to Vera, "This only works in a controlled setting - just me and him". Whiterose knew this as well - hence her meeting with Angela. Even then, Angela still had doubts. She wanted reassurance that no one would get hurt and that they would still evacuate the building. I think in her mind, even if the project isn’t real, as long as nobody gets hurt, then there’s no harm done, right? She is still helping to take down E Corp in the process after all. Of course, after she realized the true scale of the plan and that she was partly responsible for thousands of innocent deaths it broke her. After that, she needed to believe in it as there was no way back and she couldn’t live with the reality of the situation. Now for Whiterose’s end and everything in 4x11. Whiterose has regrets. Her plan, the machine, the manipulation, everything had one purpose: bring back her dead lover. Her meeting with The Mastermind and the eXit game show that she knew it wasn’t possible. Whether she knew that all along or came to believe it because she wasn’t able to move the project to the Congo, I’m not sure. Heck, maybe the machine would have worked if she could have moved it. That isn’t important. What is important is that it was the last sane act in her downfall to madness and desperation, with a clear message: "Don't make my mistake, don't leave your loved ones behind." I highly recommend rewatching her monologue in 4x11 and the eXit game now knowing everything as I think it makes it clearer. During the game, The Mastermind realizes he has walked the same path as Whiterose. He left people behind to chase his purpose and objective. The purpose of the game is to show how, with determination, you can achieve your goal. However, that's just the easy ending. Beating the game and exiting to a new world may have won the game, but the reactor didn't shut down. The only time it did shut down was when he chose to stay with the friend and not exit to the new world. Whiterose had to set it up like that intentionally. Like The Mastermind said, she wanted him to win. Despite being the most powerful person on the planet, she doesn't feel like she won. She lost her true love. Her only purpose. Had she left for the United States all those years ago like her partner wanted, she wouldn't have been this successful god-like figure, but she'd have been able to be herself and would still have the person she lost over her desire for power and status. The reactor shuts down when you "lose" the game because it was the only way you actually win. Whiterose killed herself because she had nothing left to fight for. No purpose. Some part of her may still have believed, or rather hoped, that somehow her machine would work and she would wake up in the new world, but if it didn’t, she wouldn’t want to continue to live in the current world anyways. Why was the mindscape that The Mastermind created so similar to the reality Whiterose was describing? Because in the end, they were both fundamentally trying to create the same thing in different ways; a world without pain and suffering where everything is perfect. That is what The Mastermind wanted for Elliot. Ultimately, Whiterose was so unable to let go of her fiction of a “better world” that she killed herself over it while The Mastermind finally faced the music and accepted that there is no “better world” and that the world wouldn’t even be “better” if he has to forget Darlene and eliminate any ties to the real world to get there. In the end, both Whiterose and The Mastermind were much more similar than either of them would have liked to believe. I can understand if people are still a bit unsatisfied with Whiterose’s story, but it was always about the parallel to The Mastermind and the ways trauma affects people, not the science of the machine, how Angela was convinced, or if any of it was even possible. Although, I do think we were given plenty enough to understand how Angela was convinced even if we didn’t explicitly see all of it. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

There are two comments I wanted to make about the plot that I don't see covered often. The first is about the show being titled Mr. Robot. Given the nature of the Mastermind occupying Elliot's life, Mr. Robot has been trying to protect true Elliot this whole series by putting him back in the driver's seat against the Mastermind. However, Mastermind's security system of forgetting everything that's unessential to his mission makes him nearly impossible to fight off. This is where Mr. Robot comes to the conclusion that the only way to free Elliot is to finish Mastermind's mission. This image says it all. https://i.gyazo.com/f03ea71af5ff661f7cdbfcfec5475725.png It's a wonder to watch Mr. Robot come to love and work alongside this new & aggressive personality of Elliot over the course of the series. He went from trying to physically force him out in Season 1 and bet for control in chess matches in Season 2 to opening up to him about their shared pain concerning Edward in Season 4.
