2022-12-31 01:44:42 +0000 UTCjust as sad as i remembered. ragnar wasn't a 'great character' or a memorable one and he started being the comedic relief but he was a good man, or at least a good father to canute if not a good person. he's not nearly a favourite from the manga or even just season 1 of the anime but i remember him fondly just because of his adoration towards canute. every child deserves that unconditional love from at least one person, even if they're related by blood. i didn't catch on the meaning of ragnar reaching for his sword. don't know if you're that smart or i'm that dumb... maybe a little bit of both.

And as someone who hopes that you’ll get to Black Sails when Mr Robot ends, Askeladd as a character reminds me a bit of a character from that show who I also think you two would find very interesting.

2022-12-30 23:55:51 +0000 UTCI agree. He simply has his own agenda and if he has to kill people he will do it. His lack of enjoyment from it is definitely what makes him much more difficult to hate, even if his actions are still disgusting. He doesn’t partake in any of the Viking actions that his crew does and putting him next to stereotypical Vikings definitely is used to make him less hatable and seem like the lesser of two evils. He also doesn’t seem to even enjoy war or combat, and is rather indifferent to it. The only time he was seemingly excited for battle was his fateful duel with Thors. All these add up to make an antagonist who, while objectively morally wrong by our standards, is absolutely fascinating to watch. And that fact the show respects its viewers intelligence and only drip feeds us information about him at the right moments rather than exposition dumping his entire backstory and character traits is what makes his character so compelling. And in my opinion, a definite candidate for the Top 5 anime antagonists.

2022-12-30 23:47:03 +0000 UTCI would like to comment on Thorfinn going to guard the door in the house that he was eating with Canute. Askeladd assigned Thorfinn to guard Canute a few episodes back incase you forgot so it’s not like they have to have somehow developed a special relationship over done food. His instincts took over since he knows what his job is which Askeladd gave him. We have seen earlier how Thorfinn sometimes is a bit too paranoid and can go very much on fast reflexes. No way that he would on purpose disobey Askeladd order or so called request I would think.

2022-12-30 23:27:40 +0000 UTCAside from any spoilers which I can’t mention regarding Askeladd one thing you said after the episode Lola was that you can’t even dislike him and I have to agree. Everything he does is very logical and it’s not in any way sadistic either it’s just extremely harsh and rough what he makes some go through but the same time there is a side to him I think that can emphasize with others I think some scenes have showed that (one example was his talk with Thors). There is more I sadly can’t talk about which I will later on the show but aside from that I don’t find anything regarding Askeladd really evil it’s just he has some deeper goals and some strong beliefs as well as being very different from the others and extremely interesting. All that makes him very easy for me to appreciate and even love but not in the Thorfinn way it’s something else I can’t even describe.
